As dope as It was written was, it had too many flaws, inconsistent. That nigga did a 360. No stannery, but RD was kinda flawless from front to back. Every beat was perfect except for cashmere thoughts.

Lyrically, RD bodies It was written imo

    That nigga did a 360.

    ^^
Not really tho. Illmatic is essentially Nas’ observations between childhood and his early 20s. To me, It Was Written was always a creative excercise, a fantasy of Nas’ life if the kid from Illmatic became a drug kingpin instead of rapper. The whole album is a fractured narrative in the spirit of Pulp Fiction, but most niggas are so against the “mafiso” shit, they miss that.

  11. Deen Says:

    IWW bodies RD.

Jay’s insecurity and revisionist history has turned a really good album into a classic over time. If Nas was as self-mythologizing and whiny as Jay, he’d be sitting on 6 classics.

  14. Apollo Says:

Illmatic is like the ”Thriller” Lp of hip hop. People don’t want to believe Innervisions, Purple Rain, and Kind of Blue are better records, but they are.

    Let me reiterate…

    RD>Nas. Period.

  45. Big_seth Says:

I think that it is interesting that b-ease threw Aquemini in that list. Not because of its status, but when you compare it to RD & illmatic you have to consider that it was Kast’s 3rd LP as opposed to Jay & Nas’ 1st.

What do you think makes for a better album (throughout history, not just here), doing great with the first or reaching that potential later? how about for careers?

I think a lot of people would argue that both Nas & Jay never will be able to top the first.

From RD to 09 jay-z always managed to stay relevant to the times and make tracks that he knew ppl would feel. Music aside, his marketing approach is real. Nas never had the ability to be a great “artist.” Just a good rapper. Jay-z moved from that jigg shit, to the gangsta shit wit la familia, then comfortably settled into GOAT mode on blueprint. Nas never had any kind of style evolution. Rappping, gotta give the title to Nas, as an ARTIST, Jay takes it easy

Common was lethal on the low

Back to the King article one more time.

Another point they made, Common was ridiculousy underrated until he became ridiculously overrated. Couldn’t agree more. Like, 100% emphatic co-sign on that shit.

  108. E AKA THE REAL NORIEAGA Says:

that Common would’ve ethered a whole bunch of other respected mc’s too

  109. Big_seth Says:

There’s gotta be consideration for consistency as an artist.
    ^^

I can also co-sign this because its part of the reason I say Jay > Nas

I think I am biased toward Cube though since I lived in CA during his hey days & my cousin stayed playin his albums. But I know Face is that nigga too & I respect him more now than ever since I moved to TX.

  110. D_block_4_life Says:

I just think Face was nicer on the mic then Cube, that’s all.

In conclusion i rather listen to Face before, today and probably in 5 years.

  111. TheCo!!inB aka Portly Gentleman #1 Says:

niggas act like Common didn’t just slap the dog shit out a nigga at a show last year. that mentality just doesn’t go away.

I’m just saying, ‘Face was the uber gangster rapper and some skinny kid from the Chi rips him new asshole. That shit ain’t G.

Plus, Cube bit Cypress Hill on The Predator album. That’s the start of his decline.

  113. AmpGeez a.k.a. Fuck Yo' Thoughts Says:

QAnd this is coming from a cat who owns every Cube album…even the wack shits.

Cube is a legend but in the end, Facemob has surpassed him on the GOAT scale due to his ability to remain relvant without making XXX: Enemy Of The State or any bullshit like that. Dude just makes good music.

Face’s verse on Ray Cash’s “Bumping My Music” >>>>

  114. Teh Tazmanian Tiger Says:

WTF this is the first time I have ever seen intelligent debate on nah…

    For the record:

Mr scarface is a great rapper and yes cube slowly fell off but amerikkkas most wanted cant be topped and he wrote most of str8 outta compton so:

    cube>face

jay picks better beats than nas but nas a poet plain and simple and illmatic is a masterpiece so….

    nas>jay
