    sorry but just like i can’t comment on how earth-shattering rakim was in his prime, nobody who is listening to illmatic a decade and a half late can put into context how incredible and lyrical that album was

    even at the height of the jay-z/nas beef, jay-z admitted that illmatic was incredible. he had to – he sampled nas’ voice on “presidents to represent me”

    illmatic’s status in the game is unquestionable. it’s not something that a few kids who were born right before or even after illmatic dropped can take away from. any comment to the effect that illmatic isn’t one of the greatest rap albums ever says more about the commenter than the album itself

    @tribe

    I wasn’t implying that you didn’t own the album, just that years of the “gatekeepers” saying illmatic the best has caused too many people to believe it

    –There are way to many people adopting opinion of others but that shouldn’t dilute from Illmatics dopeness.

    I think illmatic is the GOAT HipHop album.

    *Watches MM pack her shit up and leave*

  12. b-ease Says:

    Nobodys denying illmatics greatness or impact. But doing that and admitting it’s not nas’ best album are not mutually exclusive positions.

    @rigz nas co-wrote belly

  13. Joe 88 Says:

    we’re not saying illmatic was wack, it is a classic, it is timeless, it is prolly the most innovative hip hop CD to ever be released, but imo it was written was better and i’m not the only one who feels that way, does that make it a fact? No, it just mean we all have our own outlook on certain music, and I think IWW is more lyrical than illmatic & overall better, hell I think stillmatic is more lyrical than illmatic, but that’s just my opinion.

    How can niggies get mad at another nigs opinion?

  14. Big_seth Says:

    I listened to illmatic MAAAAD late. I was I guess 8 or 9 when it came out.

    That said. I didn’t get it as a kid. When I listen to it now I get hype. That’s timeless music. It doesn’t even sound like the 90s honestly. Only thing that puts a slight date on it is the sleigh bells in halftime.

    But really that album is flawless.

    “Shorty’s laugh was cold blooded as he spoke so foul
    Only twelve trying to tell me that he liked my style
    Then I rose, wiping the blunts ash from my clothes
    Then froze only to blow the herb smoke through my nose
    And told my little man that I’m a go cyprose
    There’s some jewels in the skull that he can sell if he chose
    Words of wisdom from Nas try to rise up above
    Keep an eye out for Jake shorty what
    One love”

    What, aside from his clothing line, his cinematic efforts trying to raise his the children AND cooking waffles? LoL
    The man seems to need less hobbies if anything….
    “…and the crack-rap, leave that to He”

    Dude got his hands full really.

    rofl. i’m not rigz, b. theres more than one yahdee on Nah.

    end of the day illmatic wins cos it was illmatic era Nas that produced what was IMO one of the best verses of all time

    that verbal intercourse cameo. that shit is biblical.

  18. Big_seth Says:

    I think I can impartially listen to music now, that I didn’t get as a kid & vibe to it, but I know nothing can be as dope as cranking Reasonable doubt when it first dropped.

    I guess I can say that about artists that kids today can’t though.
