Audio: Funkmaster Flex Blacks Out on Interscope

In case you had no idea what I was talking about on Twitter last night.  I don’t know what set this guy off, but I can just imagine, since certain people who work at the majors seem to be predisposed to do dumbass shit. That said, it’s a pretty bold statement to say that you’re going to ban every artist from a label, particularly a label like Interscope, and particularly if you’re Flex.  Say word you’re not going to play any Eminem and Dre Flex. And say word Emmis is going to stand behind that. This I gotta see.

that i gotta see as well. All it takes is the right record from the right artist, and flex will HAVE to play it. Whether for his relationship with that artist, his fans, or the artists’ fans.

Flex Alexander > Funk Master Flex

I mean if one DJ at a radio station doesn’t play a label music, it really isn’t big deal unless he was speaking on behalf of Hot 97 which i greatly doubt. Even with Flex’ prestige, it’s a only a time slot next to many at a big radio station.

PROPS TO FLEX FOR EVEN TAKING THAT STAND. i love it. the industry needs some kind of controversy, and, fuck it, stick it to the bigger niggas first.

i would imagine if he’s boycotting the label on the air, he would enforce that in the club, but i also imagine he gets some chunky chi-di-decks [(c) Cipha Sounds] from his club dates.

  30. dev Says:

I was listening last night and he said he was going to leave 50 out of this. Thats why he’s playing 50. He says “50, I got you, but those other cats…”

  31. whatever Says:

You’re not thinking. Flex has a whole bunch of djs associated with him. The Big Dog Pitbulls and the Heavy Hitters are comprised of djs from both major NY stations with some major time slots. If they don’t play certain music on their show or in the club, the songs won’t get the buzz for ringtones, dls, and whatever else.

What´s his reason besides Interscope being a fucking retard conglomerate? What did that dude he´s referencing actually do to set him off? But shit is interesting. Did I overhear it or did he mention Jimmy Iovine at all?

  34. Parker Says:

Last time I checked, Flex didn’t own shit up there…did he just kill himself live on the radio? He’s just talking shit.

Once they (Ennis) crack the whip on him, he’ll say Nino Coochie fixed whatever the hell is the problem.

    Bet a hunnid.

On some trill shyt, if u really want to start a “real” movement, we should boycott these white conglomerates that control Hip-Hop and don’t care nothing about our ppL or the best artist that represent Our Music. We’re slaves to the System in everything that we do. Peace to all my black indie and major labels that do it for delf, and keep the capitol in black hands and in the black community. And folk wonder why we’re the poorest ppL on earth, cuz as soon as we create something, we sell it the “System” A.K.a. the White Powers that control the U.S. That’s the only way we can take bac control of Our Music. Pimp C talked about this very same thing b4 he died. Some ppL believe it has something to do with his death, but i digress. Don’t believe me? I put this on my Life – go to http://www.YouTube.com/4ThaLuvTube – and chec out the videos on Dr. Claude Anderson, where he talks about this “System” we live in and how black folk alwayz manage to stay at the bottom, when we generate so much wealth and resources in America. And don’t get it twisted i got love for righteous white ppL, the rest of ya’ll fuccerz, well u need to get the fuc out of the way, b4 u get ran’t the fuc ovah – one – Screwston, Texas –

*wonders how much payola Flex took from Interscope

  40. Quinn Essential Says:

I think Interscope is telling Hot 97 not to play certain Pop records. For some reason this is causing Flex to act all craze?

Ironically, a stunt like this also serves the purpose of getting more people to tune into Hot 97… He probably gets approval to do things like this from the program directors… He’s been working there for a loooooooooooooooong time. It’s all part of the act…

  41. lea Says:

it sounds like he has good reason to spaz like this! if hes going this hard for a pop record it betta be a good record! i just love to hear Flex spaz like this! DAMN the assistant may get the boot!

    WOW.
yall sleep on what dj’s can do… especialy flex.

    “eskay Says:
…almost as important as the radio though is if he doesn’t spin these records in the clubs.”

  43. Maestro Says:

I can appreciate where Flex is coming from, but it seems a little late in the game to get righteous about the quality and content of millennial Hip Hop. Hasn’t he gotten all the mileage there is to get out of mainstream radio playing the exact same stuff that he’s now protesting?

Not only is it grossly imbalanced for one DJ to have the power to make a move like that, but it’s pompous and arrogant for Flex to think that he can sustain such a movement. In this scenario, Flex reminds me of one of those Japanese soldiers in an Iwo JIma cave who thinks thinks the US Navy is right outside. It’s a new battle in a new theater of operations. Social media has changed the game.

For me, it’s about balance. The content in some Hip Hop music wouldn’t be such an issue if diversity was fairly represented in the mainstream. But you know what, social media IS the new mainstream. The rug has been pulled and what we are presently witnessing is the collective ass busting of the entire mainstream media. (Cue the cartoon rug pulling sound efx)
