my mother is mixed. and what do you mean am I black? according to you I’m not. news to me.

^ when did i say you werent black?

and if your mother is mixed, do you regard her as black? does she?

but you are still mixed then, 3/4 black 1/4 white yo.
    ^^

My mom is black. My point being that we can’t get as technical as people in other countries because our history is too complicated. It then became a cultural thing to accept mixed people as black here because we are all mixed for the most part. This carried over to obama not because of his parents, but because of the culture here. Its a cultural thing.

  6. Danielson a.k.a. King Kojo of Berekum Says:

if that child chooses to identify themselves as Black, then that’s cool. if they want to identify themselves as mixed or whatever, then that’s cool. if they want to identify themselves as white that’s cool too, but that’s not really realistic in this country, because if you even look slightly Black you’re probably gonna be identified as such.

^ yeah i understand that, but im saying that when newspapers and tv journalists are referring to him as black its just wrong, because it then gives the world the view that all mixed race people are black and therefore those who want to identify as mixed race will struggle because society views them as black.

However, it is at this point the norm to think of oneself as black almost regardless of the ethnic composition of your family if it has black blood in it. And there is nothing wrong with that.

He admits & talks about being mixed, but we all know his mom probably has some black blood somewhere back in her line too.

The point is that you DONT understand how race works here. Its complicated because there has been so much missing through out history.

Your parents ancestors are from very distinct places. My black mom is from too many places to trace. That’s why BLACK folks here say our history was stolen from us. We can’t all trace our roots back to Ghana. Maybe Obama’s dad could, but his mom couldn’t.

It’s much more complex than that fam, and you really are proving yourself ignorant of american culture. Fuck what the world thinks. OBAMA is president of the U.S. Here in America things run differently. It’s just not all about skin color when regarding mixed race, you have to take in the fact of regional placement, income, demographics etc.

Being of a mixed race isn’t just about skin color. Because some mixed people self identify as white, and some identify themselves as black.

And having these types of things happen to me makes me glad to be black. I love my culture & I appreciate the acceptance I’ve always gotten. I understand that Obama feels the same way, because of American Black culture, not his African dad (which is obvious since he was not around.)

    ^^
But what you dont seem to be grasping is that even if we didnt refer to him as black, that is how he would be treated. There is no such thing as mixed here in a real sense.

In the US, you’re either black or white, and its based on how you look, not who your parents are.

  51. eskay Says:

    >>do you see where im coming from esk?

nah, not really dog. Obama identifies as Black and that’s really all there is to it. it’s not the newspapers or the media at all, he has stated himself that he a Black man. if you identify as mixed race, then that’s on you, but the majority of mixed people who are partially of African descent identify as Black. So I don’t see why we should have call our president, who clearly considers himself Black, “mixed” or whatever to accomadate the few people who don’t (for whatever reason) identify as Black.

  52. embark Says:

Well Barry is the President of AMERICA and thus the way he classifies himself is a reflection of the history of his country, not on global racialization. Plus since American Blacks have undergone an oppression that is completely unique from any other race in the world, our rules of classification dont really apply globally.

  74. icon (trillbert arenas) Says:

CNN) — Social and economic gaps between whites and blacks persist in the United States despite an atmosphere that led to the election of President Obama, an Urban League report said.
Despite hope ushered in by President Obama’s election, racial divides persist, a report says. Blacks remain twice as likely to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be imprisoned compared with whites, according to the group’s annual State of Black America report issued Wednesday.

The report urges Obama to tackle the critical challenges of the times, including unemployment, home foreclosures, education and an overhaul of health care.

“As the Obama administration ushers in a new era of hope, change, and to some extent, unity for this nation, many are asking whether racial barriers have now been erased in America,” the report said. “Are discrimination, division and inequality antiquated relics of the past? For a quick answer to that question, one has but to review some of the sobering statistics.”

The Urban League’s equality index shows the status of blacks at 71 percent that of whites. It said that economics “remains the area with the greatest degree of inequality,” with social justice, health and education following.
The analysis shows that while important gains were made, both for blacks and whites, in each of these areas during the 1990s expansion, there was actually a loss of ground in median household income, poverty and home ownership during the 2001-2007 expansion, known as the jobless recovery,” the report’s executive summary said.

i mean how many of you knew that the main dude outta prison break has a white mum and black dad? hes mixed race too. he identifies as mixed race, but people still call him white and thats wrong.

thats another side of the argument. i am not mad at beign called black, i mad at the ignorance that anyone who sint white is deemed balck straight away, and the possibility of a mixed race child seems crazy to those that would call me black.

There is no such thing as RIGHT and WRONG, in this discussion. Why do you keep saying that? This is not math or science duke. Its what people choose to do.

There is no moral outcome in choosing if you want to be called black or white. It’s not like God is gonna reject you cause you identified as white but were mixed.

Why do you feel its wrong? This is not a discussion of right and wrong. It its what it is.

Well Barry is the President of AMERICA and thus the way he classifies himself is a reflection of the history of his country, not on global racialization. Plus since American Blacks have undergone an oppression that is completely unique from any other race in the world, our rules of classification dont really apply globally.

I meant in terms of how you indentify yourself, you can biologically be a male but your a drag queen or gay you can indentify your self as a different gender. That’s what separates gender from sex. So if your mixed, it’s up to you on how you want to be indentified or what you consider yourself to be.
