LA Times Article on The Quad Shooting

Reporter Chuck Philips’ piece on the 1994 robbery and shooting of Tupac at the Quad studios in New York is now live on the LA Times website. Much of the article is based on the testimony of an unnamed FBI informant that was present on the night of the shooting. Philips says he contacted the informant who reiterated that the information, given during a 2002 FBI interogation, was all acurate. The reporter also claims to have corroborated the info with other sources who were present at the Quad on the night of the incident.

Some highlights include:

  • Pac befriends Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond, Jack "Haitian Jack" Agnant, and James Sabatino while in New York shooting "Above The Rim." They try to get him to sign to Bad Boy, he resists. The men and Sean “Diddy” Combs see that as disrespectful.
  • Henchmen, Sabatino & Haitian Jack arrange the hit as retribution after Pac rejected offer. Sabatino is quoted as saying that Pac "needed to be dealt with" before he went to prison on the rape charge he had caught with Jack at the Parker Meridien Hotel in 1993. Pac was due to be sentenced the day after the shooting.

  • Diddy and Big supposedly knew of and approved the attack, although the original plan was for Pac to be beaten up and robbed, not shot.

  • Three assailants, associates of Henchmen from Brooklyn, confront Pac as he arrives at the Quad. He ends up shooting himself once during the assault, and the assailants shoot him 4 times.
  • Haitian Jack is quoted as saying that anybody who believed that the incident was a robbery was "crazy."
  • The three assailants are all currently locked up on unrelated charges. When Philips contacted them, one denied any involvement, and one admitted that Henchmen arranged the hit. The third man explained that the statute of limitations had expired and offered to produce the medallion that was taken from Pac during the robbery.
  • Randy “Stretch” Walker, Pac’s boy who supposedly helped set up the hit, was murdered a year to the day after the Quad shooting. The FBI Informant says Sabatino, who had mob ties, arranged the hit as a favor to Suge Knight, who by that time was managing Pac.

  • Federal prosecutors have continued investigating the incident and its repercussions (the subsequent murders of Pac and Big) and have called several music industry sources to testify before a grand jury about the incident at the Quad.

The Times has included a pdf file of the FBI informant’s testimony and an interactive timeline of the events surrounding the shooting and the aftermath. Also, if you have any questions for Philips, he’s doing a live chat tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.

Yea man, no advance tracks, or single. If it does drop with that title, the packaging’s gotta be all black. Which would actually be kind of ill. I still maintain he aint dropping with title.

^The interview he did on the read carpet, where Kelis mentioned the John Lenon song “women are the NIGGERS OF THE WORLD”, made me do some quick research. There where many songs that used that word. Personally dont think its such a big deal, let it fly.

No doubt, I think it’s being blown a little out of proportion too (which I’m sure is okay with Nas) especially in light of albums lilke Pryors’.

^yup, you know when Politics, Gangsta life and Cinema merge, its given that theres going to be some resistence. But if it ever gets made, it will be a classic. I dont know too much about Sly Stallone behind the lens though. Would much more rather someone like Brian De Palma, Oliver stone combo.

well I havent read No Country, but I heard No Country is a lil easier to read altogether than Blood Meridian. Blood Meridian is one of those books you gotta take some real serious time with and pay attention to details( theres also alot of historical facts, places, people and events that have really happened in the book) and such. its a real extensive, and I have heard from other people to that it can be at times dense and sometimes difficult to read (which I do agree I had to put it down and then come back to it a few times) becuase its one of those books you really got to pay close attention to…but it it an great adventure to read.
