Tenants Look to Purchase 1520 Sedgwick

DJ Kool Herc, US Senator Charles Schumer, Tenants of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue will hold a Press Conference to Unveil Tenant Sponsored Plan to Acquire the Birthplace of Hip Hop at the Community Room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue (where Hip Hop began!) Tuesday, January 15th, 2008, 10:00 AM. Low Income Tenants will make a bid to preserve the complex as affordable tenant-controlled housing.

In 1973 DJ Kool Herc held a party in the community room of 1520 Sedgwick Ave where his innovative DJ style laid the ground work for the invention of Hip Hop, one of the most popular and influential music styles ever created. The 100-unit apartment complex also boasts another distinction; it is one of the few remaining affordable housing complexes in the West Bronx created through the NY State Mitchell-Lama program.

Dope. Let’s hope they can keep the building free of yuppies.

“Artists don’t last more than two albums. He come out, he a new sensation. He got a hot record. When he come out the second album, he ain’t even got a hit. He’s gone. Similar to like a Young Buck/Lloyd banks situation. It’s real talk, they outta here. I been in the game fourteen years, I been dropping so many number one hits. Do You know how hard it is for a guy to come and make a hit record every single time? [”I Won’t Tell”]is about to be #1 in the country. It’s gonna blow. You can’t stop me. So my thing is, why not give credit where credit is due? “Lean Back” made em “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It,” made em “Shoulder Lean.” Blame me for “Pop, Lock, and Drop It,” cause “Lean Back” start that. “Make It Rain,” everybody and they mother… Rihanna had to go get an “Umbrella” … but they don’t want to talk about Fat Joe like he’s top ten.”(c) Fat Joe

^^ I love Fat Joe that nigga always tells it like it is, Word to Rocking Out with the Cock out.

    ^^

it has one benefit: breaking up the projects

putting all of the Black people together in condensed, oppressive living conditions is the smartest thing the white man ever did in his goal of holding Black people down

thanks to that policy, which has gone on for decades and has continued to this day, people of conscience will invest the next 100 years trying to reverse the ill effects of what has been done

smh @ amerikkka, i love this country most of the time but sometimes shit is just sickening

^True. But it was in the context of which he said it that cheapened the comment. It was one of those “you went too far” type of jokes. One of those “habitual line steppers” (c) Charlie Murphy

  68. Blackwater Says:

Leadership doesn’t start in Hollywood or Congress or chasin’ some fuckin’ ambulance. Any good leader knows that leadershi[ starts from the dirt. How can you lead a bunch of people you never met and don’t understand. Thats why the government is organized the way it is. You got your community level leadership, your city level, state, etc. I ain’t got Jesse Jackson in my neighborhood addressing it’s problems. I don’t have any subordinate organization to Al Sharpton confronting the issues of my hood, Them niggas don’t lead me or represent me because they don’t try to understand my issues.
