and you know what he didn’t have to listen to it but he could of at least lied to us and told us he did, but honestly everytime it spoke it seemed like he was trying to start a beef with tribe like q-tip would make a quick diss track over someone else’s beat and him and lupe would be in a battle and maybe then lupe can sell more than 30,000….the nerve of that dude to clown how much tribe sold ? foh……

…..i’m saying all the people saying who cares if he disrespected tribe they old and over now, you peole are the young cats who are growing up on lupe and lets say lupe goes on to make made classics and goes down as one of the best ever one of the most important pieces of hip-hop then what if 10-20 years from now some dude comes out sounding like a 2027 lupe fiasco, only he claims he never heard him or gives a shit about him who the fuck is lupe to him
it’s just about the music it’s about one of the very first things you are taught in life and that is respect your elders, thats in family and people who help it down for you in your position before you, it’s called common decency

@ X– 50 Cent sold 1.1 mil in a short week last time.. Plus this time he dropped like 5 singles before the album dropped–all subpar, formulaic singles at that–Jay sold 425k without a real top 40 single, with 2 months of promo VS 50’s like 6 months of promo.
Plus, the majority of Jay’s albums have sold in that range his whole career. 50 sold something like 800k for GRODT and 1.1 for The Massacre. FOr 50, 691k IS flopping.

From the billboard article on Lupe:
Throughout, dark production by Soundtrakk, UNKLE and Chris and Drop enhances the weighty themes, particularly on “Street on Fire” (about a burgeoning epidemic) and “Put You on Game.” Among the few guests are Snoop Dogg, who turns up on “High Definition,” while Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump serves as the producer of “Little Weapons.”

and yeah.. i like lupe.. F&L was dope.. and i’ll prolly pick up “The Cool” when it drops. but don’t get it twisted.. I love hip hop, but i don’t love rappers. i don’t like to get too carried away with judgements/feelings about these guys as people..

I don’t think anyone is a hip hop head enough to say they know every important song/album. hip hop is too vast/influential.. and if you think you do know it all you’re either frontin’, or putting too much emphasis on these VH-1 “Top Hip Hop Jawns†Countdowns..
^^ No but if You grew up in the mid 90’s and was born in the early 80’s and consider yourself a fan of hip-hop do some of the knowlegde and listen to the albums reknowned or Applauded for Greatness i.e OB4CL, Illmatic, RD, Ironman, Chronic etc etc etc
^^^ Most definitely… I did that with plenty of music. In the moment, I was jamming to the dopeness that was on the radio (yeah, radio used to play dopeness) and i wasn’t buying EVERY album that dropped… until I was able to get money myself and go back and cop joints I never fully heard.
(alot of my dubbed tapes would mess up cause I always had the cheap cassette player…)

and Dang, I copped a lot of mid 90s rap, but I really didn’t listen to the radio.. real talk, we didn’t have one with an antenna growing up.. and pops stayed driving hoopties, so a lot of times the radio ain’t work, and if it did, he’d never have let me play rap..
Soooo MTV was my outlet and I wasn’t exactly checking for Yo! or MTV Jamz like that..
Moms let me listen to hot 97 and that’s why I stayed copping singles.. Either that or The Box and I’d hear shit like “Flow Joe” and whatever else people in Jersey City were calling up to hear.
That’s middle school.
High School was more of the same, but mom’s moved into NYC so no more car rides and it was just the LIRR for me and there went hearing some stuff like Jay or whatever cuz MTV wasn’t playing him.. What were they playing? Bad Boy, Wu-Tang, 2-Pac.. and so that’s what I was checking out.
Then XXL came along and I picked up on Bubba K and Budden and my world opened up more..
Then the internets came along and say hello to Lupe, Blu and Exile, Saigon, Pap, Joell..
So my evolution has been slow, but I’m making up for it. I missed a bunch of stuff ya’ll deem classics, but if it wasn’t delivered to me, how the fuck was I gonna hear it?

@ X– I’m not against it at all.. It’s just not a big deal if I do or not. When Big Homie posted tracks from OB4CL I checked ‘em out. If someone linked me up to a Tribe album, I’d check it out.. When the homey T-Dot posts classic clips of 90s boom-bap on his blog (onmypaper.wordpress.com), I check ‘em out and I appreciate them. Hell, Ty made it a point to get me to check out Mobb Deep’s first album–the “eye for an eye†joint.. And I appreciated it..
But if I didn’t hear those songs, what then? I’m not some kinda asshole for it, I just didn’t get around to it.

also again i have no problem with him not knowing tribe but he didn;t need to go so far out of his way to diss them either especially since he was supposed to be honoring and paying tribute to them, some people just don’t know when to shut their mouth and apparently lupe is one of them, and i aint talking bout the shorty i knew from high school with the big breastesss

If you were to introduce someone to the CULTURE of Hip-Hop, what album would you play for them.
Remember nor rap, gangsta rap, reality rap, backpack rap or what ever but the culture. What album would it be?
For me it would be MM because it covers all the bases from love to the irony we feel about using the N word to spirituality. If you’ve never listened to it, you can’t critisize it.

…propbably the biggest thing we fuck up everyday on here, those dudes need more credit from everyone though not just us, i remember when they were doing that MTV best groups panel ( i know its MTV who cares ) but some dudes on their were saying they didn’t belong in the top 10, luckily others smacked them upside their head and said they helped make tribe what they are, shit lupe dissing tribe would of been like tribe dissing de la talking bout why the fuck do i care what they made or how they sound who the fuck are they ? i mean i have boys who rap and everytime someone says you sound like this dude or a little like him they instantly wanna hear what your talking about, but Lupe could give a fuck less / just cause he flopped and saw no success

….yo i was argueing with my mom the other day at dinner about how out of control some of the lyrics are in these new songs, and while i defintely don’t disagree i was like it’s just music and enetertainment it’s up to the parents to teach the kid right and wrong and whats just entertainment, my mom wasn’t buying it until i told her i was bumping that doggystyle album impeccabily hard when i was in like 6th grade, and i act nothing like that album, i learned from my mom and older people around me not to treat women a certain way and no matter what some rapper told me when i was in 6th grade it wasn’t gonna change the way i thought cause i was raised to know better and thats when i was in 6th grade….

^^^^Floorida
anyway, i really can give a shit what lupe thinks of tribe. bottom line is, you are asked to do someone rhyme? you don’t know it? go look it up. period. he didn’t have to listen to the whole catalogue or whatever, not even the remixes (which i say they are still the kings of that shit. oh, and De La too. NO ONE comes out with 6-7 remixes for the same song, with 6-7 different tracks for it anymore. just because you have someone else rhyme over the original beat doesn’t make it a remix. but i digress). the fact that he disrespected THE TRIBUTE and not tribe INITIALLY is the only problem i had. i don’t give a shit about who he grew up listening to or how he’s not influenced by them. him saying all that extra shit is where he lost (shout out to souls of mischief). there’s so much shit that i’m not even trying to go back and hear. but if some random, only sold 3 cds and his mother didn’t even buy the bootleg ass rapper came up to me and said he wanted me to perform his only single “The Whopper gave me the runs again” at his tribute, best believe i’m hitting the dollar store, stealing that tape to get the lyrics and flow down, and i’m tearing that shit up like i wrote it. not because i was a fan (because i’m not nor will i ever be), but because i will not disrespect that man. period.

I just think it incorporates a lot of the themes from hip-hop as a whole.. the social commentary, the personal stories, the glitz and glamour, the sex, the money, the wit..
Again, it’s out of the albums I’ve heard.. I coulda picked Reasonable Doubt or Life After Death or The Chronic, but IMO those are all genres.
I coulda gone with The College Dropout, but I think the eclectic-yet-cohesive production of Late Registration gives it the nod over the uniform ‘Ye beats on TCD.

yeah i know what you mean. Tribe is a good representation of hip hop.. i love illmatic tho cause it’s SOOOOO in the middle. It’s gritty but not overly thugged out. I appreciate the lyricism and how it talks about the streets which is what makes hip hop special compared to other genres… it’s the mouthpiece for hustlers, the soul of the streets.
hmmm… The Roots’ Things Fall Apart isn’t a bad one to start someone off with too. funny thing is, (not to bring back Juvy) but I actually have put someone on to hip hop thru 400 Degreez. Before that, all he listened to rap wise was beastie boys.

I’m not averse to the West (I’m a Hiero fan, a Blu & Exile fan, a Ras Kass appreciator and a Madlib/Stones Throw stan. Although I’m SERIOUS with this music shit, I understand that not every track needs to be powerful, emotional and important. There’s room for party jams, that’s how Hip-Hop (the music) began. BUT… we don’t have any powerful, emotional and important Hip Hop these days. Money-making does not encourage that…
November 15th, 2007 at 3:58 pm
A number of tracks diverge from the conceptual theme, including “Gold Watch” and “Paris Tokyo,” on which Fiasco longs for a simpler life atop a jazzy backing track with shades of A Tribe Called Quest.

damn, that’s funny. i’m jay-z old. funny thing is, my hip hp foundation comes from listening to stretch armstrong and bobbito on those late thursday nights. now, i listened to hip hop waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before that (the 1st song i ever heard was from kurtis blow in my mother’s backyard. DAMN). and i grew up with the melle mel shit and grandmaster flash stuff. but i did not like it to save my LIFE. and this was what i was supposed to be liking at the time. i just couldn’t get into their flow and what they were rhyming about. and let’s not get me started on the tight ass leather pants, leather bracelets with the spikes and and shit, leather boots those cats was rocking at the time (no village people). but then… RUN DMC.
that was it for for. they fit what i was looking for, my ear at the time, and what i considered interesting. fast forward 4 years, i heard 3 feet high and rising. that was it for me. all time favorite group. then ATCQ, then i started listening to stretch and bobbito. after that the towers dropped, and i was in limbo as far as hip hop was concerned. nothing after that gave me any kind of “feel” as far as hip hop music. it just became… rap to me. i still listen to cats who come out now, but i don;t look for anyone’s cd anymore. i’m mostly downloading shit. i used to buy maybe 20-30 records/tapes/cds a year. now i’m at like… 4-5. i feel it depends on your particular time in music. i will NEVER knock a person for what they listen to or grew up on. everyone is so busy trying to push what they believe is better. i know i raise an eyebrow at what some of you consider to be good, better than, whatever (hhid was trash. fuck that. the tracks were gaaaaahbitch, and i dare ANYONE to tell me they listened to “who killed it” and didn’t shake their head). but it’s all about overall individual tastes and what helped nurture those tastes (II)…
oh, and cam is wack…

Thats the problem right there… technology cant capture emotion if theres no emotion there… dont get it twisted you can feel the emotion of MJB and A.Keys and what not… its just not that many people are artist anymore and bring those emotions out.

I tried to explain that to my ex…
But as I think it was Nation or Phuque, said..
“It’s like trying to teach the dog algebra”
I listened to “Never see you again” this morning on the way to work. And now I feel the need to go buy her CD.
You haven’t heard soulful until Alicia Keys is 5 feet away from you looking you in your eyes singing at the top of her lungs.

I think this new Alicia Keys album is by far her best album. Not saying her others ones were not good, but I like this one the most.

alicia keyes is not that great. i say this only on the strength of hearing her stuff before she dropped. it was beautiful. then someone got her an mpc 2000 for christmas. this was right before she started working on her 1st cd. it was over from there. i KNOW everyone will disagree, but you don’t know what you’re missing…

Honestly please wait to hear the song first before you praise Lupe and hop all on his dick for being creative or whatever. I was just spitting jokes but saying something will be hot before even listening is the epitome of Stantastic behavior and borderline Faggotry, No Disrespect
