Lupe: “MC Hammer > A Tribe Called Quest”

Ok, last Fiascogate post, promise. So Lupe spoke to Vibe about the whole situation and rather than trying to extinguish the fire, he threw on his gasoline SB’s and walked into the flames.

"[Tribe] didn’t sell 10 million records, so why would people think they had a blanket on the world like that? MC Hammer was way more popular to me than Tribe Called Quest."

First off, let me just say that this guy’s stubborn bullheadedness reminds me so much of myself, it’s creepy. I can totally see myself reacting the same way if a bunch of people ganged up on me and tried to convince me that they were all right and I was wrong.

I’ve been known to tell people that they’re complete morons who don’t deserve to listen to rap music just because we disagreed over one song. That Hammer comparison is really classic if you think about it. I tell Nas Stan’s that Vanilla Ice is better than their idol all the time.

Anyway, the point of this post is to clear one thing up. I feel like the quote of mine that the Vibe writer used was taken somewhat out of context. Reading that article, you get the impression that I was chastising Lupe for messing up on the Phife verse, and that’s definitely not the case. It was an honest mistake and it happens to more experienced MC’s than Lupe.

I was actually speaking on the way he reacted to the criticism of the non-incident. He could have just ignored it, but instead he opened his mouth and kept talking, ultimately helping to create the big fuckfest of negativity he now finds himself sitting in the middle of.

Nevertheless, as I was reading his comments in the Vibe piece, I had to wonder why on earth he would start throwing the word "elitist" around. Come on man, are we really going to take it there? I’ve been accused of elitism when defending your music if you really wanna talk about it. And man, a year or so ago, I would’ve taken that "8 Ball & MJG are better than Tribe" bait hook, line and sinker. But not today.

If that’s how you feel, then more power to you. I’m not mad at your opinion. I sincerely believe that Smoothe da Hustler and Trigga Da Gambler were better than 8Ball & MJG in their prime, because hey, that’s what I grew up on. And sometimes that’s more important than number of classics, skills or anything else.

All of that being said, I hope this shit is over (even though it probably isn’t). Is he being arrogant? Sure. So what, now rappers aren’t allowed to be arrogant? I’m sure we’re all familiar with Kanye West? Curtis Jackson? Shawn Carter?

I still think Lupe is nice and I’ll still support him and encourage others to do so. (Unless he says something about Lord Finesse. Then I’m going in).

yeah but most of that fan base that he potentially had for The Cool would prefer siding with purist hip hop rules stating that a tribe called quest is god, than be hip, trendy… and know MC Hammer’s impressive and extensive catalogue by heart.

With Lupe talking about record sales, he still doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Tribe may not have sold 10 mil like Hammer, but they did get one gold plaque and three platinum plaques…which is more than Lupe ever got (or will ever get if things keep going the way they are.)

All this backlash could’ve been avoided if he simply said “Damn…I fucked up. I’ll do better next time.” Even the best performers have fucked up once in a while. Remember the BDP live album with KRS fucking up the chorus to “Jimmy hats”, or the Roots live album with Black thought slurring his words like a muthafucka in “Adrineline” and “Proceed”, or that horrible Lauryn Hill concert some months back? Lupe’s flub was not that serious…it’s his dumbass excuses that ruined him.

Also, for each copy of the Wu’s The 8 Diagrams or Ja’s The Mirror that is sold or downloaded, the rappers will pay both the original writers and their publishing companies (Harrisongs and Sony/ATV) 9.1 cents, an amount mandated by federal law.

  71. icon (trillbert arenas) Says:

Words of wisdom from that same MTV article:

Publishing is probably the least understood, most complicated (and most unsexy) aspect of the music industry, yet it’s also one of the most lucrative: a near billion-dollar-a-year business that’s as much about corporations and copyright law as it is creativity and compositions. It’s the bizarre point where artists looking to make a statement crash directly into songwriters looking to make a living. And as record sales continue to bottom out, artists trying to have their music heard (and get paid) are exploring every facet of publishing … which means it’s only gonna get more, uh, complicated from here.

“Most people think of the music business only as records, but the big money — the continuing money — is in writing and publishing songs. Because now a song can be used in several TV series, a lot of films, video games, ringtones — all these different uses, not just in the U.S. but throughout the entire world,” Brabec said. “And you’re getting royalties every time you get one of these new uses. And it’s only going to get more interesting. Record sales are going down the tubes, but I’m optimistic about all the other areas in which songwriters can exploit — in the best possible way — their songs.

“Radio and TV performances are the biggest areas, but you can make a lot of money on just having a song in a singing fish doll,” he continued. “You’d rather have a singing fish doll than a million-seller, believe me

The issue is his words and thoughts are reaching thousands of people as opposed to just affecting his immediate social circle. It’s our fault for putting faith in man. I remember years ago when LL was huge(N/H) and he said EPMD was his favorite rap group. At that time, I thought EPMD was corny, Rakim bitin’, simpletons. I was LL’s #1 fan. Just him saying that made me re-examine my stance on EPMD. I peeped the catalog and I was converted ’cause if LL said it, it must be true. Now, I see EPMD’s influence in Hip-Hop. They turned the West on to the “funk” and were the first to “cross-promote” by having NWA in their videos and being in theirs. This is not the first mistake Lupe is gonna make.

They turned the West on to the “funk” and were the first to “cross-promote” by having NWA in their videos and being in theirs. This is not the first mistake Lupe is gonna make.

I am trying to understand what all this “tribe is the best”/ “tribe sucks” has to do with anything.

Lupe is supposed to be a professional. Learn the lyrics. If you fuck up, fine. Accept it, say “my bad” and keep it moving. This would be a non story.

I love tribe, but I could care less whether lupe fiasco chooses to listen to them. That is that mans choice. But what does that have to do with the job he agreed to do at the show? By giving all these excuses, he is acting like a child.

Brother needs to grow up, take responsibilitystop telling people how much you cant stand tribe

Lupe has a right to say or feel how he wants. Maybe his choice of words and when he released the statements were poor decisions but its just an opinion. I mean Lil’ Wayne calls himself the Greatest Rapper Alive and not many even blink an eye…

[…] Ok, this is the final Fiascogate post. Lupe says that Vibe took his comments completely out of context (I know the feeling). He says those statements were made long before the Hip-Hop Honors incident even occured. He says he sent them a C&D this morning and he plans to sue for defamation of character. […]

Dude is a son of tribe and he doesnt know it. respect the architects, its simple. he doesnt have to like tribe, but respect the legacy they left. and he says he prefers 8 ball and bro, cool, but if you haven’t listened to tribes best album, that’s an unqualified judgement. he’s caught a dose of the “kanye’s” but ye’s knows what’s what with hip-hop history and you best believe he respects quest, he knows his shit, apparently unlike fiasco. silly boy.

Lupe fucked up, and he’s stubborn. Okay. Whatever. Everyone has said something stupid in their life. And no matter what he says, it shouldn’t affect people’s opinions on his music. Lupe’s album was the 2nd or 3rd best album of the year, no question. When someone is attacked from every angle they crumble and they try to defend themself, then when they realize they’re wrong they have to say something that make them feel like they are right. Lupe didn’t push units because people are stupid and decided to sleep on the good rappers and put the garbage ones on MTV2. So many other rappers say much more contraversial things. And, Kanye’s lyrics do not demolish Lupe’s. Speaking of Kanye and Lupe, any news about CRS?

Man I love Lupe Fiasco. Hammer was way more popular but, to me anyway, ATCQ was revolutionary. They set a nice foundation for a lot of todays hip hop and are one of my favorite groups of all time. Lupe’s seeing it from the wrong way. MC Hammer was a bigger name but he wasn’t necessarily the “inspiration” that A Tribe Called Quest was. Hell, I even started a website about the type of music they made ( http://BoomBapHipHop.com ) and I guarantee you 90% of those artists were affected in SOME way by ATCQ. Can’t say I’m not looking forward to CRS though haha!
