Not For Commercial Usage

So on Friday night me and a bunch of actual journalists piled into the Roc the Mic studios in Manhattan for an American Gangster listening session with Muhammad Hovi.

I was one of the only people in the room who hasn’t seen the movie yet, and while it’s not essential to enjoy the album, I can imagine it would enhance the experience.

What I did get though, was a track by track breakdown of everything I was about to hear from Jay, which is the next best thing, if not even better.

Here’s a partial tracklist.

Pray
No Hook
Roc Boys
I Know
Ignorant Shit
Success
Say Hello to the Bad Guy
When The Moneys Gone
Fallen

There’s not much I can really say about it that YN hasn’t already told you, or you can’t learn from this EW rundown or this Vibe preview. You really just have to hear this shit, but here are a few observations and thoughts from the night.

The album plays out like a film. Every track represents a a different period in the progression of the hustler. The next single, "Roc Boys," which should be leaking any day now, is the celebratory "your name on the blimp" period.

I really wish everybody could get the same explanatory lecture we got. Some of you guys aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Jay purists are going to flip when they hear "Pray" and "No Hook."

This shit is actually more soulful than The Blueprint. Word to Marvin.

If he decides to use a different beat on the work in progress "This Shit Right Here," like he says he wants to, ya’ll lost.

He damn sure does have the movie on continuous loop on a TV in the studio.

As YN mentioned, "Ignorant Shit" has been reimagined with a verse from Beans and a new third verse from Jay. Imus lost.

Jay’s inner circle drinks alot of Patrón. When in Rome…

The "Blue Magic" video is shot, edited and ready to go. Jay said he’s not ready to let it go yet.

Nas has a verse on "Success" that Jay wouldn’t let us hear.

He said he wants to shoot a movie to accompany the album (which accompanies a movie).

The album is lyrically heavy. There’s no shortage of double entendres abound, and I didn’t even catch a few metaphors until we were on our 5th or 6th listen and Jay started pausing songs on some "you heard what I said?!" shit. Yeah, he does that too.

I’m no longer mad about missing last Saturday night at 40/40.

I can not fucking believe Jermaine Dupri produced "Fallen." You won’t either. One of my top 3 favorite tracks on the album.

Man, even though Nas>Hov, damn that Blue Magic shit is fire after a couple repeated listens. The beat is actually top notch, the thing is when you hear it on shitty speakers you miss the bassline which is the strong point in most of Pharrells beats, the drums also don’t sound as powerfull and being that its a simple beat that’s what carries the beat. Shit sounds crazy in the whip cause the bassline/drums are crazy. Blue Magic is fire, niggas need to listen to it in the whip or on any good speaker setup with good bass response.

Columbia Snaps Up Rapper Jim Jones

    October 05, 2007, 6:35 PM ET
    Hillary Crosley, N.Y.

Rapper Jim Jones has joined Columbia’s roster, following a series of releases for Koch. The deal does not affect the artist’s pre-existing A&R director position at Warner Music Group.

“It’s a 50/50 joint venture with Columbia for my production company as well, Jones Family productions,” Jones tells Billboard. “Shout to Rick Rubin for believing in my artistry and Kyambo ‘Hip-Hop’ Joshua for being my partner in this process. Shout to Koch Records as well, because I broke a lot of ground with them and they gave me my own lane. ”

Jones is recording his Columbia debut, with an eye on an early 2008 release. A new single, “They Don’t Love Me No More,” will drop in a few weeks, with a corresponding video.

Jones is a member of the Diplomats, a rap camp that emerged from Harlem early this decade and secured a sizable fan base. But this year, group leader Cam’ron disappeared from view, popping up via occasional YouTube videos that fueled his ongoing beef with 50 Cent.

“We started Dipset to build a brand,” says Jones. “And whether we’re at different labels or separated from each other, it’s all the same brand, Dipset. We are brothers and brothers do fight.”

Cam’ron is “not on mars — he’s cooling out,” he adds. “I guess he’s recording. this is what he usually does when he’s recording. So this is nothing unusual.”

Jones, who’s had a long-standing beef of his own with Jay-Z, told the Web site Missinfo.tv that his new record deal might cause Def Jam’s president to take notice.

“That quote was a joke that got misconstrued,” says Jones. “I just don’t like the dude. But if you look at my music, I don’t put out any battle raps. I’m trying to make money.”

To that end, the Diplomats extended their brand to include their purple liquor, Sizzurp, and Jones’ clothing line, Nostic, which he runs with his mother.

“We just came back from Magic clothing summit in Las Vegas and killed it,” says Jones. “The line is for men and women and it’s mainly denim, t-shirts and long johns right now. We might cross over eventually into pajamas and maybe boxers.”

In other Diplomat news, Juelz Santana is recording his third album for Def Jam, “The Reagan Era.” Jones says Santana’s new single should be out within a few weeks.

    JAY-Z TALKS JOE BUDDEN

AllHipHop’s Jigsaw had the chance to chat with Jay-Z on Friday regarding his new CD, American Gangster, and you know we had to ask about Joe Budden, since his first and only album came out in 2003! On top of everything, Budden has been removed from the Def Jam website! WTF? (Hell, even Sam Scarfo is still on the roster! Foxy Brown isn’t even on Def Jam and she’s there!) Is all lost? Read below for the deal straight from Young Hov himself.

AllHipHop.com: Is Joe Budden ever coming out?

Jay-Z: The problem with that is, coming out how? If you just want to throw an album out there then next week you recording [songs] about how we didn’t support it. We could do that. We could do that tomorrow. I don’t think that what he wants. I don’t think that what he needs. Maybe…I don’t know.

AllHipHop.com: At one point he was seen as sort of the heir to Def Jam’s throne so to speak and then you guys had a lil’ something on that song.

Jay-Z: That had never influenced my decisions. You see Beanie has a record with R. Kelly. Juelz Santana has put and album out. I’m way to big of a person to [do that]. I would never block anyone’s blessing, because of any thing personal. If I didn’t want to deal with him, there’s other people there. I mean, why do we have a problem, I freestyled on his record. He probably made his career off of freestyling over other people’s records. If I start freestyling over other people’s records…Lord forbid.

But, I would never block anybody’s blessings. You don’t stay successful like that. Things catch up to you. I believe in that for real. Karma. You can’t just do what the f**k you want…sh***ing on people for no reason.
