Russell on Obscene Lyrics: Bleep That Shit Out

So last week Russell got pretty much everybody who matters in the hip-hop industry together to talk about the recent assault on lyrical content in the wake of the Imus fuckfest, and what if anything the record labels and execs are gonna do about it. The meeting was supposed to be followed by a press conference announcing whatever new initiatives Russell and the TI’s had dreamed up, but the whole thing ran past schedule.

Today Russell and Ben Chavis released their statement of recommendation to the broadcasting and recording industries which you can read in its entirety here. In effect, Russell is telling radio stations and record labels to bleep out the words, "bitch," "ho" and "nigger." Now, correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t radio stations already supposed to be doing that, and don’t record labels release edited versions of explicit LP’s? You gotta love it.

^^I wouldn’t put it past that dude, plus there were several rumors that he did indulge in eating human flesh from time to time as well. In the original “Amin” motion picture I still remember the scene when they opened up his frige and there were human heads and hands up in the freezer….

^^I hate censorship personally! I’d rather the explicit verse be rewritten for the radio over the bleeps and edits.

Heavy D’s track “Don’t Curse” does a great job at making that point!

Not sure why exactly. The rest of the cd is loaded with cussing. Maybe that track was for the radio back then and they didn’t bother taking off the edits for the album.

I think protect your neck was censored on all copies.

^Same shit happened with Gimme The Loot on Ready To Die and a Kool G Rap track from the Live and Let Die joint. But that was due to Big And G Rap talking shit about pregnant women and clapping at coppers.

  31. Sh*t Son Says:

Anyone see Noz’s top 50 album over at xxl??

  32. Jamz Says:

^^The way I understand it… record labels would normally release a single/EP on vinyl for the DJs to play that included the explicit versions of the track. In some cases to push the consumers into buying the vinyl or CD single, they would only include the edited version of the song on the album. Another example of this is the Big Pun hit “I Don’t Wanna Be A Player (Remix) feat. Joe off of his debut album.

  33. Game Over Says:

they didn’t just say broadcast industry, they also said RECORDING industry. which means they could be talking about clean versions being the ONLY version available, at least as far as those three words go. i’ll wait and see who actually implements this. i don’t see it beign hard to implement, as adults and savvy kids have been adding the cuss words to clean versions for years anyway, as they sing along to the radio.
