Daily Headlines 12-19-06

I can’t believe that in a story about the closing of legendary Brooklyn vinyl shop Beat Street, the best anecdote the Daily News could dig up was about the group Fannypack.

He sings with a charismatic swagger but conveys the impression of being slightly lost and worn out. No doubt Eskay. If I get a minute I will, but judging by some people’s responses, they won’t get it.

I get it in terms of Jada being the one everyone thinks is the nicest but Styles is the deepest with his jewels sprinkled through the rhymes and Sheek being the most slept on.

I dunno though I am a huge fan of the first album I used to wake up walk to school come home to that joint. The line “since Im a righteous man I dont eat ham I wish more brothers were a lot like me” inspired me to stop eating pork.
I never slept on Sadat his Concerto in X minor is one of the illest songs ever and the man recorded with Nas and Biggie so I dont think the industry slept on him either.
Styles and jamar and Puba and Jada I can see the connections.

  81. spanish jay Says:

ive been doin my own thing

  82. Mr. MEEN Says:

There is a great correlation in that arguement though as Jada has taken the Puba route and left the other two behind ala Styles and Sheek. And like the LOX the solo albums have never lived up to the group LPs. Unlike the LOX though the Nubians made at least one classic album united. I never thought the LOX as a group or as soloists have lived up to their potential and made a classic.

What’s up world? I’m one month into this bid on Riker’s Island. Slowly but surely, I’m adjusting. The transition from the free world to this environment has been startling, to say the least. I’ve been assigned a job in construction. It breaks my day up, so I really can’t complain. We are paid $20 a week. That’s the figure — you read it right. I use that for my phone time. I sleep in a dorm surrounded by 60 men. Real wack! The 6 building is basically a sentenced building — meaning most of us will be home in a year or less. I’ve met people of many races, classes and denominations. There are Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings, Gods, Muslims, to name a few.

The food is straight ass. Whoever the city jails gave the food contract to is dead wrong. I’ve been doing my little workout to keep my physical in tact. I’ve continued my reading, which really keeps me sane. It’s been easy, so far, but I have seen it jump off and leave a nigga leaking. I’m just coming from chow. A captain and a C.O. were having a heated exchange, and the whole mess hall wanted the C.O. to duff the captain. So you can see what type of temperament it is in this place.

I’ll be hitting ya’ll again soon.

We know that Jim Jones has one of the hottest records out, but we also know that the Roc is pretty heavy in Philly. You tell me if this is true or false, Philly fans. A reader wrote:

I thought you would have heard bout this, but last Friday December 15th, Jim Jones did a little performance at a high school basketball game. South Philly high played Chester high and after the game he performed before Lutheran prep played American Christian in the second game. Things didn’t really go as planned for Jim though, while starting off rapping “walk it out” remix he walk to the side where it was a bunch of people(like 20), from 13th street in South Philly and they was throwing up the “Roc” sign. Jim Jones had to stop rapping and said “ oh we got Roc-a-fella in the building”, he look at Q-Dezzy and Cosmic Kev from Power 99 station and said “ I don’t know Kev” as if he was going to leave. But he said something “its cool cause I’m ballin“ and stared the song. However within his first verse, they started throwing flyers at him so he stop rapping again and told Cosmic Kev again he don’t know if he should continue. He started over again but stop rapping as the music keep playing and started whispering in someone ear. Meanwhile the crowd got restless and started booing him. He started rapping the second verse again but stopped after that and left. He only said “I’m going to be back Christmas eve or new years eve, and I hope things be better, all the mature crowd come party with him” and “if ay Roc-a-fella fans want to come, feel free to come through” but nobody cheered accept all the little girls that was there, it was a high school game, however everybody from Philly and Chester was there.

I think Common is sick ive been a fan since day one when he was rhyming about jacking off. Is he a coon for that? And no his overall image isnt negativity like some would say the Clipse are.

    Hip Hop Is Dead…

  241. D. Billz Says:

Coonery is all about what you choose to exemplify…

For the longest, I’ve been tellin’ people on here that artists like Heavy D, Chubb Rock, Naughty By Nature, Pete Rock & CL, and plenty of others have made “party” music without exaggerting tales of philandering, machismo, and violence. Therefore having fun in your songs or dancing does not make you a coon. I’m a B’more native (born and raised) and the dance culture is heavy here with our Club Music (which Jersey has picked up on and named it Brick City Club). And what used to be just innocent fun has turned into some wild shit happenin’ on the dance floor. I understand Ben Hameen’s point of view because he is a DJ and his persona embodies that of someone who likes to have fun and just enjoy the music, which is probably protocol for being a DJ. Plenty of people pack clubs during the week and weekends to escape the harsh realities or to cure boredom. They dance to the music and really don’t see any harm in just having a good time since most in the club will tell you that “the lyrics don’t pertain to them”. I’m one of those people for the most part, but even still I have to insert conscienceness in a crowded social function. There are certain songs that I deem just plain ridiculous. And the sad part is that the party crowds are gettin’ younger and younger and these are the people that most of those songs are marketed to.

This is when it gets down right degrading because there are no longer limitations on what we deem as “fun” and it’s ruining the minds of the youth and future generations. I don’t believe in cencorship because it wasn’t until very recently that Blacks were even allowed to have a voice. But I do believe in the responsiblity of the artists to some extent. We have lil’ girls dressin’ more provocative and usin’ sex for dollas as a means to validate their womanhood (Lil Kim, Jackie O., Trina). We have young boys who are joining gangs at a rapid rate with flags hangin’ outta their pockets, murders over territory, and disrespecting women to validate their manhood (Dipset, Dog Pound, Cash Money). Now, before you start throwin’ rocks, understand that I know that these type of images/music have always been around. Ghostface/Rae/Jay are infamous for their coke rhymes. Onyx, M.O.P., and Mobb Deep have a history of violent rhymes. But as much as their antics were despised, there was a thin line between the streets and their music (back then, of course) and many people felt they were a form of rebellion that was needed instead of being a rebel without a cause. Amongst the rubble, there were jewels scattered through the pile that would explain the trife and uneasy lives many were leading for the sake of somethin’ better: Last Dayz (Onyx), Temperature Rising (Mobb Deep), Back In the Days (MOP), You Must Love Me (Jay Z), All That I Got (Ghost), etc. The catalog of music is being sacrificed for a club joint/party joint/”for the ladies” joint. Understand that I don’t have children and would never allow an artist to dictate how my kids should live. But does that mean we HAVE to sacrifice integrity for a dollar just because we have that right? When will we ever preserve somethin’ of sentimental value that is worth more than the contract that’s bestowed upon you?
Songs like “Black Coffee” (Heavy D), “Round The Way Girl” (LL), “I Got A Love” (Pete Rock & CL Smooth), and “You’re All I Need” (Meth & Mary) expressed the love the Black man had for the Black woman without explicit content, degredation, or exploitations. Are we sayin’ that Black people are no longer creative anymore on a lyrical and conscience level that we have to succumb to downright ignorance in order for the youth to enjoy themselves? I enjoy all forms of hip hop whether it be party, conscience, gangsta, etc. But within those divisions, it has to be a balance or a scale that rates what is acceptable to be played to the masses. I’m not tellin’ anyone they should stop makin’ the music they’re makin’. They have that right regardless of how I feel or any others feel for that matter. But when we KNOW that we’re being exploited by the Big Wigs (labels, radio, etc.) for monetary exchange, then I think it is the responsibility of artists to say “nah, I’m not gonna do this or that type of record just for a dollar”. It used to be a time when all forms of hip hop could co-exist so that a well-balance portion could be heard throughout the world. But since they have changed the rules then we need to do the same. And if nobody wants to take responsibility then so be it… but you can just kiss this culture good-bye then if that’s how you feel. Enjoy it while it lasts…

But like I said, dude’s like him, Kane etc. who’ve worn tuxes in the past weren’t going on about hip hop being dead at the same time.

And last time I checked, wearing formal black tie wear was not required for funerals so maybe the concept of this party is going over my head. I just think Nas was being mad extra with the dress code but It’s not that big a deal, frankly though. I hope the album does well ‘cos he made a good record.

it’s entirely possible to have too many ghostface interviews. i want to believe that he lives with garden gnomes in sweden and gets his inspiration from nash bridges but actually listening to what he says outside his songs ruins that image for me.
