The chick on the hook is Corinne Bailey Rae, the hot new soulstress from England. Step your music game up people!

I wasn’t goin’ say nothing about this, but, after listening to the track the 4th time…Here’s my disclaimer-I am older than a lot of these folks and clearly I listen to more than just beats…It’s hard for me to hear dude talk about losing his nephew and the young man’s child coming into the world and then see the posts these guys put up about some of these other rappers. The tihs this dude talking about and the tihs they talking about ain’t in the same realm. I appreciate all the many facets of our genre…I guess for me, though, dude be taking it places I can feel. Like Comm, Cee-Lo, Thought, TIP, NYOIL (even)…So much I could say on the subject, but I’ll stop…It’s good tihs…

The thing is simply that is JayZ so people will automatically love and hate it… its just the nature of people. It surprises me how many “Is this a Dre beat?” I’m hearing… It also suprises me that the context of the versus are taken to new “philisophical**” heights. If you dont know who produced the beat… does it matter?. I personal think its a cool song… he’s talking from the heart, even tho i know he can do better. I like Kingdom Come and his other jump off “Show Me What You Got”, even tho the main hook and the beat is a rip from the old Public Enemy song by the same name. All three tracks are good in my book. Are they up to “JayZ” standards… depends on what the fans say, but I won’t compare i’ll just enjoy or not enjoy his new tracks as they come out… each track has its own merit. Thats what i feel. GMS, TSU… BCDG BITCH!!!!

  4. Kim Says:

YOOOO i kant believe yall sleepn on dis kidd… he too deep 4 yall man.. if u really listen to da song he has a powerful message … if ur highly educated u kall underdstand him.. im in college and into lyrics.. y u think he got so much respect… bcuz he dont always need a UPBEAT track to ripp.. all he need is a couple of instruments like on DEAR SUMMER.. did u realize that he talkn bout dame in 1st verse, Beyonce in the second verse n his lil cuz in the 3rd….now hear it again n see if u feel the same way…

  5. AtoZ Says:

I like the track, it’s simple, it’s personal, it’s real. Alot of people will never have a yacht, half million dollar cars and crazy acre homes, but we can all relate to broken friendships, relationships and lost loved ones. He’s showing the human side, I, personally like to see that in an artist and no matter how big Jay gets he finds a way to give you that amongst all the other things. The game has gotten so diluted now that you recieve criticism for being human…lol. It sounds crazy but people are getting brainwashed by someone saying they have beef or talking about killing that when they hear something that’s close to everybody’s reality, they hate it. Hopefully things will change, but, I’m an optimist……….

Back to the point – about the song.

    Whos the singer?

Its not beyonce, its not mary, it doesnt sound like gwenyth but thats not to say its not. I heard speculation that its marsha from floetry, i dont think so. Lady sovereign doesnt sing – or if she does, not anywhere near that well.

I wonder if it might be madeleine peyroux.

verse 1 is clearly directed at past business associates. I dont think its fair to say its just dame, cause him and dame were never really friends. Think about that last beans freestyle that seemed very open ended, i think him and jay have some communicating to do.

verse 2… ‘i dont think its meant to b – b’ has to be about beyonce. its surprisingly candid for jay, and this impresses me.

verse 3..about his nephew who died, and how he feels responsible.

this is a more grown up hiphop, and thats a good thing.

how anyone can think its about nas, is beyond me. thats just a stupid thing to say.

If you hate jay you wont like this.

  9. Stitched Wrists Says:

IMO, the drums are spot on with the FIRST track on the busta album (shit with Marsha from Floetry and Q-Tip). Only difference is the snares have a reverb or something on the busta track, here they’re almost dry. Anyways, this track is heat even though he bit the Lauren Hill track of the same name from her Miseducation album….

  10. h-block Says:

in the first verse his talkin about the break up
but this track is firee no doubt

  11. b Says:

I think it a hot song and he should put it on the album, I just wish Lauryn would have sung the hook

  12. ice Says:

in the secind verse he talks a about B at the age of 23, could u assume that this is an old track? he says, ” and B at the age of 23, shoe loves her work more than she loves me”

  13. thick1sonly Says:

They just went on a trip to Africa for 2 weeks had to get an xtra plane just for the luggage…shit thats wasup going to tha mothaland wish i was her RealTalk….If Aaliyah would have been patient an did that smart shit, she could be here now might not be no Beyonce hmmmm!

it’s actually marsha from floetry. “Step your music game up people!”

  15. TINA Says:

THIS SONG IS AWESOME ! JAY Z IS THE FUCKEN MAN & THIS SONG IS REAL AS HELL .

  16. m_eaze Says:

You got to know a lil about what went on to understand this track. I think its hot and it explains his mindset about the whole situation. If you think this is wack you should question your intelligence. The dude is talkin bout how he feels after his nephew died. It’s just real and I feel that it’s just what hip hop needs some real emotion into the art.

  17. Morgan Says:

    SHiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiTTT SON!
This song is so vicious right now.But i think its kinda fxcked up how he kinda is breaking up with beyonce over his sng [verse two] but still, best song he ever made!

  18. dabee Says:

I have believe the person singing the hook on this track is an artist named Res. She has one album..and is mostly known to collaborate with Talib Kweli

  19. Khiya Says:

The girl singing the hook is Marsha who used to be in Floetry who is now signed to Aftermath. She is English for those that dont know.

The Beat is produced by Dr Dre.

The first verse is about Dame
The second verse COULD be about Beyonce??
The third verse is about Khaliq who was Jay Z nephew

Whether you like the song or not, at least he gave you something to think about.

  20. yvette Says:

This is my song right here.!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. yvette Says:

This is my song right here

  22. Alan Says:

This song talks about painful problems with friends and co-workers (Dame: verse 1), it also talks about relationship problems (Beyonce: Verse 2) and finally it talks about the death of a close loved one (His nephew: Verse 3).
These are things that everyone can relate to at some point in life. I, for one am glad to hear Jay being honest and talking about something real that everyone can relate to. I love it when rappers let us get a glimps of what is going on in their lives. I think people can respect honesty.
I just hope that “the faith that was started” in Jay’s life is true faith in Jesus. That’s something we all need…the Saviour to save us from ourselves, and our sin.

  23. ebz Says:

It’s alright but i’ve been hearing it’s about beyonce’ and then I hear it’s about dame.

  24. Knockout Says:

Are yall serious? Of course it’s about Beyonce’ He says “B” in the damn song. This is some bullshit. He ‘s crying cause she love her music more than him.
Her music made her a millionaire, not his Joe Camel lookin’ ass. I always thought she couls do betteranyway. Fuck em’
The song sounds like he is bitter and wants some fuckin’ attention because they broke up. Who cares. People break up everyday.
He sucks and this song proves it.
Jay, Jay Evans Get over it.
B said he was cheatin’ anyway.

  25. Knockout Says:

Oh and the song is featuring Erykah Badu. Not Res, Corinne Bailey Rae, or Marsha from Floetry. Nice try though.

  26. eskay Says:

^actually it’s Chrissette Michelle, but thanks.

  27. Los Says:

This track is the realest shit out right now, real talk. I can’t believe so many of you guys are sleeping on this. Haven’t we heard enough of Hov to realize he’s a lyricist? Why must everything be a club track talkin about gold bottles and bars full of nonsense. There isn’t 1 formula to make a hit… back to what we all know, introspective shit we can all relate to. Switched up his flow and road the beat like a pro, as usual. Classic.

Again, this damn confusion about the verses, guess some people don’t read or listen to the words this man speaks.
    Verse 1 – Dame …friendship (lost one)
    Verse 2 – Beyonce …relationship/love (lost one)
Verse 3 – Nephew …relative [death] (lost one)

  28. Rashanna Says:

You can say what you want..But how can you hate when basically if you look @ it this way..He’s just mentally ending broken friendships/relationships/death!It’s just his way of moving past things. How can you knock somebody for just dealing with the pain that has been cause’d in their life?I fucks with Jigga!

  29. www.myspace.com/gubber06 Says:

i think jay z is whack but this && kindom come are iight besides these two the rest are bum joint materiallll

  30. Stina-Lor Says:

Ummm…I like the song, and I think that it’s that floetry Lady on the vocals, and uh, I like the way he thinks. It’s his business, he really could do like MJ and send out garbage for the rest of his life, because he is paid enough to maintain his lifestyle. Want better songs? Find another original, pennyless hopeful who wants some spinners and a big ole booty. You know HE’LL come with it – he’s hungry. Otherwise, be a fan, be a contributer to the art, or be owt.

  31. MARJORIE AKA LIL BIT Says:

THE SONG OF LOST ONES IS THE BEST SONG OF THE YEAR, IT HAS TOUCH THE MIC AND THATS SOMETHING NOBODY WILL EVER DO, AND EVERYBODY THATS HATING AND CALLIN JAY-Z TRASH CAN KISS MY ASS CAUSE THE NEGGA MAKE MUSIC VIDEOS LIKE THEY WERE MOVIES, HE GOT SO MUCH MONEY HE CANT COUNT NO MORE, JAY-Z HAS BEEN THE BEST OF THE BEST THATS WHY HE IS CALLED THE CHAMPION.

PS PEOPLE: KEEP RUNNUNG YOUR MOUTH HE STILL MAKES MORE MONEY THEN U HATERS AND MONEY IS THE PROOF OF ALL YOUR WORK.

  32. The Truth Says:

This is music for grown folks, so obviously lots of people won’t be able to relate to it. It’s an emotional song, and still people are complaining that he doesn’t spit multi cyllables etc. Stupid shit…

  33. K Says:

all u haters out there shud shut up. If u actually take the time to listen to what jay says, and understand wut he means in a literal sense with a little bit of knowledge about his backround you’d realize this song is hot. This is why hip-hop is dead. because now a days the only thing that u people like is shit that tells u to snap your fingers and lean wit it roc wit it. Take notice Jay is the only rapper who can make a song that sounds like this, hot, and pull it offwith the class he did. thank Jay and Nas for keepin hip hop alive.

  34. Nell. Says:

Thank you Los, and others for pointing that out.
ive just listened to this song 5 times. Now, I honestly hate rap music. Detest it. ABHOR it. and i dont mean ALL rap, i still respect old school and underground. But listening to this track actually reminds me of why some rap can still live. Im not saying its the greatest song ever, but if i ACTUALLY downloaded it and sat down to listen to it, it must mean something. It is his way of attacking or removing what has hurt him, through lyrics. I dont know if anyone may know this,(sarcastically speaking)but lyrics are used for self expression, not to snap and lean and walking it out to a bunch or retards over a beat.

This track is the realest shit out right now, real talk. I can’t believe so many of you guys are sleeping on this. Haven’t we heard enough of Hov to realize he’s a lyricist?
