Ballerstatus and my alma mater have run downs (pay close attention to Rhymefest’s comments on snap music – I told you it wasn’t just New Yorkers complaining) and Concrete Loop has some more pics.

I went to last years’ concert with MF DOOM, DE LA and ROOTS. This joint looks like it was pretty dope.

Speaking of dope… The best part of the show last year was that white dudes were lighting me up for no money down. Black and Spanish cats are way too squirrely with their choke to be on that type vibe.

White dudes know their shit is lethal so when they pass to you for a hit they ask you if your’e sure. It’s like you don’t want to be responsible for somebody getting turned out by the chronic.

  7. KonishiwaBithces Says:

@ William Sunday maybe its alil more than chronic

  32. Nah Right Skit Announcement Says:

    To all,

Thanks for the criticism and the praise, We deserve both. The part 3 skit was not our finest hour technically but it came out ok. The comments went from wack when I pressed the submit button by accident, to that was short and random. I had not yet realized the first part wasnt moderated yet so I was baffled why some people kept pointing out the credits part. The reason why It didnt come out in all in one part cause I copied and pasted part of it and like I said earlier had a bad technicality day, even with eskay’s supposed pics.

To those who ask why they weren’t in it or why they got demoted to a certain position, I have this to say: Our team cant fit you into the story line if you are not dynamic. If you dont put personality into your posts then its hard to incorporate you into the skit. If you post like once every two weeks then its difficult to insert you where your part is funny.

Part 4 is finished and will be dropping next week. Please dont get your hopes up or expect it to be as funny as the third one. But We hope it wont dissapoint. Feel free to comment on the skits as you wish, harsh criticism will be well taken. Thanks.

But in all im happy for Jay,he came a long way from riding Biggie’s nutt sack to stealing his verses and now selling millions of records after his death.

Be honest do you think Jay-Z handled the situation with Dame correct????
I know Dame could hold his own but at least try to look out for a old friend and it wouldn’t have lead up to Camron airing his out every week.

  45. D. Billz Says:

And as I recall, wasn’t it Dame’s idea to sign the Spice Girl chick?

  46. Boosie Says:

It’s funny that black businessman always get the most flack out of anyone. Defjam is a business, its not your crew. This is a music business. Jay-z runs a corporation, not a hood crew. Def jam is much broader, this is not rocafella where you put out hood acts and get all thugged out, he is way beyond that. I never knew why niggas understand that.

Do people criticize bmg ceo? universal ceo? Neyo is making him mad money, so is rhianna. Once people realize this aint no homeboy crew and this is big money corporation business people will understand.

  47. D. Billz Says:

“Be honest do you think Jay-Z handled the situation with Dame correct????”

^ Since we’re basing the situation off heresay, lets put it like this: would you let a nigga retain the masters to your first album as bargaining chips to be released? Like I said, we’re only going by what we read in those articles.

  48. Sour D. Says:

listen, my moms aint someone whose into hiphop. she listens to z100 i’m sure. she’s heard the name jay z based on the fact that i been buying his albums since i was 13. and anyone who reads the news can see that jay is president of def jam. she probably doesn’t even know what def jam is but knows that he is the president. the point is that commercial had nothing to do with rocafella. hp wasn’t like, ” we need someone to market our new technology. Hey, whose the head guy over there at rockafella. jay z? i think i heard of him, ask him if he wants to be in a commercial” he got that on the strength of the name of jay z, not through rockafella.

  49. D. Billz Says:

Boosie… Exactly. Notice that he kept the hood dudes under his own wing (Rocafella). And those dudes are rappers like Tru Life, Aztek, and Nore.

^ Co-sign. And that zoo already exists, it’s called the projects. A sick ass science experiment that would see how people in poverty would react in such close capacity with another (I think Chicago was the first in America). I do agree with you on many points that there is no unity within our culture and that we’re sellin’ more than just a “brand” when we allow vultures (corporate America) to intervene in our business. But the main reason I disagree with you on the ROC situation is because Dame wasn’t upholding the brand like he should’ve. I forseen him taking it in the wrong direction when he decided to make Cam the VP. Now, me not liking Cam’s music has nothing to do with me not liking Dame’s decision. I just felt that he was wrong the person to put in that position of power. In other words, you would allow some knucklehead, who by the way is in a gang with the rest of our copycat youth following suit, to make the decisions and mandate creative control. Just look at Diplomat Records? Would you have that roster signed to your label? Hell no. If we’re going to point the finger then lets hold both people accountable. Dame was turning into the other Harlemite mogul that I despised (Bluffy) because he wanted to be famous. He was signing singers from washed up pop groups (the Black spice girl) and giving album deals to drug fiends who can barely off the dope long enough to do a song (ODB, R.I.P.). I’m not saying that all of Jay’s decisions have been great ones but (Lady So-boring, Terror Marie) but I think it was time for a change. See, there’s a fine line of being progressive and being a sell-out. There’s a new wave of MC’s coming out of the East Coast (Pap, Tru Life, Saigon, Stimuli, etc.) and Lupe out of the Midwest who can bring forth the lyrical dominance we need in the game. Dame was attempting to uphold an image for a label that was not only hurting the team, but embarrassing the craft as well. And to this day no one still hasn’t answered this question: If Dame’s business practices are so great, why aren’t people rushing to sign with DDMG? If he’s such an honorable dude in the hood then shouldn’t there be more people willing to put their careers in his hands such as Jay did?

Like I said El, I understand where you’re coming from but I believe it’s more that went on behind the scenes that we don’t know about that could explain this more in-depth.

when it comes down to it, jay grew up. who wants to rap forever. i could see where he got bored. theres comes a time when you gotta step up, and a man with his intelligence can no longer stay in the rap world. Whats wrong with wanting more for yourself. I mean look at rocawear, he conquered urban clothing, conquered urban music, s.dots had a good run at the shoe industry, Armadale is one smooth ass vodka by the way…what else was it left for him to do? after all those accomplishments, for someone driven by success your gonna wanna look for more. as far as him runnin def jam like someone said up top the industry is a big business. He has to look at every market and see where the ear is for everyone in the country, not just the hood. hes gotta see where he can make the most money for his company. Jay aint just get selected to run def jam, jay has been signed to jam for a minuete. he has made them alot of money. he pretty much bought his way into it. now to address the haters thats hatin on jay for not puttin NY niggas on, dont get mad, dont let it ruin your day. get hungry. people told jay he couldnt make it and he got hungry, look what happened. stop bitchin and get a meal yourself. work on your skill. alotta these doods is sounding the same, saying the same story a different way, that we been hearing since the beginning of rap. thats why ny aint gettin no love, we basically done heard it all before. now its up to producers to create hot tracks so the lyrcis can get outshined. Jay is on some other shit that alotta doods cant understand..hes on his grown man, hes grown from what he was. isnt that what life is about anyway? real talk

  116. WESTCOASTREPRESENTER Says:

I’m sure I will get it something terrible for this post but I gotta get this off my chest… I’m sick of people hating on the south sick sick sick! I was raised half my life in LA and half in MIssissippi.. I like all kinds of music. From everywhere.. I think everybody has their place.. the hating must stop! so here it is…

DEAR EVERYONE WHO IS UPSET AND FEELS IT’S UNFAIR AND DOWNRIGHT BLASPHEMOUS FOR “SNAP RAP” OR DOWN SOUTH MUSIC HOWEVER YOU WANT TO ADDRESS IT TO BE ON TOP OR SELLING RECORDS>> THIS POST IS FOR YOU!

    1.) Stop hating.
2.) If you’re so good @ writing rhymes and you “DEFINE HIP HOP” and your album is not selling and that upsets you. Please reavaluate your motives. Music is about expression not selling records or going diamond. While that can be an added bonus… Like ERIC SERMON SAID.. Keep true to the art form and it will feed you.. not you will be platinum.

3.) This may come as a surprise.. but there are billions of people in this world with a wide variety of taste in music.. some people like to LEAN WIT IT ROCK WIT IT. in the club.. that music is for them. don’t be mad.
4.) RHYMEFEST WHO??? Fuck outta here.
5.) All aspiring artist here’s a warning: EVERYBODY IS NOT GOING TO LIKE YOUR MUSIC. that being said.. stop complaing about what the rest of the world likes.. and get on your grind.. so what if DOWN SOUTH MUSIC IS ALL THAT’S SELLING it doesn’t seem to stop James blunt or LENNY KRAVITZ from continuing to make music.. I don’t hear them complaining…. tough shit. Life is hard get over it if you beleive that HIP HOP is your destiny.. it will happen for you.. again stop hating on others.
5.) TRUE… there are people who get ahead in this industry who are not the best lyricist. there music is widely popular.. T-pain,D4L, Mikejones,JULEZ SANTANA( I personally think he sucks) CAMRON,( again my peronal Opinon he sucks even more) NELLY, JOE BUDDEN( ULTIMATE HATER HATER HATER),I mean I could go on.. but the point is.. these artist music is not to be held in any high reguard or compared to greatness… like TUPAC JAY Z BIGGIE SCARFACE BUSTA QTIP/TRIBE CALLED QUEST KRS ONE ICE CUBE RASS KASS OUTKAST THE ROOTS you know what i mean.. they don’t compare.. it is what it is and people like it obviously..Good music is good music. PERIOD POINT BLANK No matter what region it comes from.. PLEASE STOP HATING ON THE SOUTH BECAUSE THEY ARE ON TOP IT’S JUST THEIR TIME JUST LIKE IT WAS ONCE THE WEST COAST TIME…RICKY MARTIN’S TIME IT WAS ALSO ONCE VANILLA ICE’S TIME.. GET THE FUCK OVER IT…. make a hot album already.
    6.) STOP HATING
7.) There are plenty of rappers from down south who are good lyricists and know all about TRU HIP HOP. I will spare you and not list them.. cause if you’re into REAL HIP HOP>. u should already know who they are… and guess what there’s quite a few of them.
8.) IF YOU SUCK AT RAPPING IT ISN’T BECAUSE OF WHERE YOU ARE FROM IT’S BECAUSE YOU DON’T HAVE SKILLZ PERIOD.
9.) The Art form of HIP HOP will never die or be ” brought down” if those who love it continue to pursue it and do it.. stop worrying D4L Will not be the standard of hip hop for the future.

10.) Consumers spend $10-$18.00 on whatever music they choose.. right now it’s looking like consumers like down south music. FOR THE LAST FREAKIN TIME GET OVER IT.

thanks for listening if you’re mad.. sorry.

^ You know, there’s a lot to be said about your statement. For one, you make a thorough point because we as a people don’t have anyone speakin’ up for our culture that’s prevalent in hip hop. The Commons, dead prezs’, Talibs, and Mos Defs can only do but so much because they aren’t supported by the machine. But you also must realize that Jay became successful even while buckin’ the system or status quo around ’95 – ’96. He was able to straddle the line of being street and commercial without swaying too far to either side to lose his core audience and to sell records. Hypothetically, if Jay woulda continued his Reasonable Doubt streak I doubt he woulda been as successful. And once you’re not as successful, who’s gonna hear you or know that you exist? Unfortunately, this has been the demise of cats like Talib and Mos because they always had great things to say but never the appeal to the masses. And trust me, that’s just how the machine likes it. The last thing they want is for our youth to be educated, informed, and inspired. That’s why the status of sellin’ records, from gold being good to platinum, has changed. Back then, you could “keep it real” (mid 90’s rhetoric) and have success and respect amongst your peers and fans. But since the new millenium they (the corporate structure) raised the status quo and Jay has chased and exceeded it ever year. But unfortunately, they expect every other artist to follow suit instead of just lettin’ them be themselves. Remember the Change Clothes video? Remember the cameo appearance made by Mos Def? Now, would a revolutionary like Mos be caught dead in someone’s video that he didn’t respect as a man and artist? El, you might disagree with me, but Kanye was “recruited” to be the revolutionary for his label. Why? Because he has the “good guy” appeal yet bucks the system more than any other rapper. Who else do you know has openly got on a platform and spoke against Bush? Don’t you find it weird that Jay-Z “all of a sudden” ended up on songs with dead prez? Or that he makes Common references in rhymes? Or that he signed The Roots to Def Jam, a group that has great music but struggled to even go gold? Jay plays his part the best way he can be can’t save everybody. Instead of complaining, we should support more artists like Mos, Talib, Lupe, dead prez, Immortal Technique, and those alike. We need to make the change as consumers and more importantly as men. We’re too busy looking for leaders in the masses instead of looking in the mirror. Like I said, I agree with you that I wish he more of a Malcolm than a Martin, but we only base that on his success financially. If you exclude money, those other MC’s aformentioned achieved that over and over yet we neglect them. There’s a new breed of MC’s coming forth with something to say and now’s the time to support the cause that YOU want.

Damn El, you got me on my shit! Lol.

    RBG 4 Life!

  118. T. Okes Says:

    ^Couple good points, but

    2. What do you see as bein’ true to the artform, since you quoted Erick Sermon? I don’t see that snap shit stayin’ true to hip hop. And in my eyes, makin’ almost nothin’ but club music (I’m exaggerating a little, but still) and shit that’ll appeal to the mainstream, looks like just selling records. Yeah, it’s still expressing yourself, but cats are doing the same cookie-cutter shit over & over again to sell, period.

    5. (*cough* the FIRST 5) Another good point, but doesn’t that mean you’re complaining too??

    9. Hip hop will die. Shit is inevitable. While some cats try & come with somethin’ different (which isn’t always a bad thing) others will bring garbage & a gimmick and people will eat that up. Meanwhile, the younger generation will keep sayin’ fuck the Ice Cube’s, the Nas’s, the Jay-Z’s, and basically anyone else that started their career 5, 10, 15 years ago. Again hip hop will die, and like any other death, it’s an inevitable event most of us are not lookin’ forward to.

  126. D. Billz Says:

    T. Okes… Thanks. But to be honest, I don’t think hip hop will die chief. I just think it’s the process of evolution and eventually everything comes back full cirlce (that sounded very 5 Percentish). You gotta remember, hip hop was just born back in ’79. The art form is only 29 years ago. Just think about rock n’ roll. It’s been around since probably the 40’s and has seen it’s fair share of lumps and bruises. I used rock music as a comparison because it likens rap more than any other genre. Now you have groups like Maroon 5, Linkin Park, Incubus, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, and host of others that make great music. Sometimes it takes a repetition of failure (DFB, D4L, Joc, etc) for people to wake up realize why rap started and what it’s about. Yes, the music can be fun and entertaining but it must be don’t intelligently so that the craft doesn’t get dumbed down for any Joe Schmoe to pick up a microphone. Many people danced to Heavy D records, but not many during his era could emulate him or was anywhere near articulate, nah mean? Right now I just think we’re going through a bad transition and it seems hopeless. But as long as we continue to show support for those artists that are meaningful and substantial then the culture will last forever. Don’t blame the artists, blame the labels and consumer. We don’t have a right to tell any artist, no matter how much we think their music sucks, to stop makin’ music. That’s out of our hands. But we do have (I hate to reference this guy) the power of a dollar. The consumer is the reason for the turbulence. So we as consumers need to take charge and support the right ones.

With that being said, the plantation is shuttin’ down and massa is settin’ us free… holla at yall later.

@D. Billz, I hear what you’re sayin’ bruh…again, real talk. I guess we kinda have different takes on the topic. I think I was leaning more towards the “roots” of hip hop rather than the bigger picture of the entire genre.

@WEST, like I said I see where you’re comin’ from homie. You know I wasn’t tryin’ to get at you like that. Most of what you said in both posts are things I’ve definitely learned front & center ever since the South started their whole ‘takeover’.
