?uestlove Interview @ XXL

If this type of thing interests you (as it should), and you haven’t see it yet, XXL posted Part 1 of a two part interview with ?uestlove of the Roots earlier today. He talks in great detail about what will no doubt be 2 historic performances at Radio City Music Hall tonight and tomorrow. He urges anybody who has tickets to arrive early as the notoriously stodgy venue has them on an airtight schedule.

So what should someone know before coming to the show?
The one thing I wish I could stress to New York City above all is that the Roots are the most professional organization when it comes to promptness. It’s imperative that they show up on time. I don’t want them to think “Erykah is gonna show up around eight, so I’ma show up around then.” You have to be there for the opening act. First of all, there is no opening act. Usually the best part of the show, at least for us, is the surprise you get at the beginning. If New York knew like I knew, they will be there 24 hours beforehand to catch this. They need to be on time. None of that fashionably late stuff.

He also talks about what these shows mean for East Coast hip hop as well as hip hop in general, and touches on issue of corporate influence on the culture. When asked whether Jay (or The Keyser Soze of Hip Hop) would be making an appearance, he laughed and gave a non answer which basically means you lucky stiffs who copped tickets are gonna get to see Jay perform tonight. With The Roots. And Nas.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to kill myself.

Yeah that I do know – But there are so many mcees that played their part in making all of this possible…Granted Sean did play his part and earned a spot as one of the best in the game for his time spent – but when I hear shit like (The Keyser Soze of Hip Hop)….My face get tight and walk with this big question mark floating above my head like where have these cats been since 87…..I just dont get…..I have people that I think is just really dope but to use the term above about one of them – obsurd

THE THING THAT MAKES JAY SUCH A GOOD POTENTIAL PRESIDENT IS THE SAME REASON WHY HE HAS ACHEIVED ICON STATUS, CAUSE HE HAS BEEN ABLE TO WALK THAT FINE LINE BETWEEN STREET APPEAL AND COMMERCIAL SUCCESS, AND YEA HE HAS TO FOCUS ON THE THINGS THAT WILL SELL THE MOST AND JEEZY AND RICK ROSS UNFORTUNITLY WILL SELL ESPECIALLY WITH JAY BACKING THEM AND APPEARING ON TRACKS, SO HOPEFULLY HIS GAME PLAN IS TO ESTABLISH THE COMMERCIAL SHIT THEN BRING OUT SOME MORE SHIT THAT MIGHT NOT GO PLAT BUT WILL KEEP US HIP-HOP HEADS HAPPY *COUGH BUDDENS REDMAN* LIKE I SAID BEFORE TAKING OVER A RECORD LABEL IS A HUGE DEAL AND YOU HAVE TO BUILD A GAME PLANE FOR HOW YOU WANNA BUILD YOUR ROSTER AND YOU FIRST GOAL IS TO MAKE MONEY AND GET THOSE SALES UP THATS HIS JOB AS PRESIDENT

    THURSDAY NIGHT RECAP
man, i know this sounds retarded, but I feel like Ive got jipped. just got back from the thursday night show..i paid 90 bones and no hovi. i also realized that Im getting old and that I dont enjoy Roots shows as much as before. but then again, what act can really hold your attention for 3 hours standing, much less a hip-hop one? what i do know–i sure as hell do not need a 15 minute rendition of You got me, with some teh ghey Hendrix wannabee guitarist, shredding with his teeth. And Yes Rahzel, we all know you can beatbox and make weird noises with your mouth. its cute. but 20 minutes of it, capped off with a vocal rendition of the “Touch it”? I already hate that beat, why do i need to hear you do 48 bars of it? oh wells, it was cool to see nas and kane, even though kane’s mike didnt work. Shout out to all the Friday ticket holders, looks like your in for a treat.
