Oprah Listens To 50 Cent

oprah.jpg

So apparently Oprah appeared on Ed Lover’s show yesterday and proclaimed her love for hip hop.

"I listen to some Hip-Hop. I’ve been accused of not liking Hip-Hop and that’s just not true," she said. "I got a little 50 [Cent] in my iPod. I really do. I like ‘In Da Club.’ Have you heard the beat to ‘In Da Club’? Love that, love Jay-Z, love Kanye, love Mary J. Mary J. is one of my friends."

Despite the fact that she claims she likes 50, I respect her for addressing the criticism. I’m not saying I now love Oprah or anything, but she kept it somewhat gully:

"Years and years ago, Quincy Jones and I had this conversation about the evolution of Hip-Hop and what it really means to our culture," Winfrey said. "Hip-Hop is like jazz and gospel music, evolved from the people, a form of protest, a form of expression so you can’t deny that, nor would I try. But I do believe there needs to be awareness of who we are, how we got here and what that means about staying here."

She could have just sat in her ivory tower and ignored 50 and Luda’s comments but she made an effort to clear the air and show that she at least respects our generation enough to respond and I can’t be mad at that. Especially when everything she said makes sense.

Sidenote: Ed Lover shut your co-signing ass up, talking about you won’t use the word bitch ever again in your life. Didn’t you just pound a a chick out in the middle of the club or some shit? Now Oprah’s on your show and all of a sudden you’re freaking Bill Cosby? Ease up off the bra strap homey, seriously.

How u “love” 50 Cent & Jay-Z and then criticize Luda, they rap about the same issues Oprah claims she had a problem with.

Fuckin Uncle Tom, or should I say Aunt Jemimah.

  34. E From BK Says:

Fuck 5-0 and fuck Luda. Though I respect their hustle,I don’t respect the supposed “tough” dudes get all emotional over a female. That shit is way embarrassing. If it were Jenny Jones or some shit they wouldn’t be upset because in their pea brains they would say,”Fuck that bitch, I have more money than her” and keep it moving. These dudes are mad at Oprah because they aint her. They are haters. She kept it real with her comments. I thought she was on point. With all the bullshit deaths and with all the bullshit Amerikkka is being force fed by these bullshit faggots she stood up to them. Them dudes got punked by Oprah and she was like “what……..what?”

  35. Foekist aka The Cosigner Says:

Es, what you got against cosigners….?

  36. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

    @ theunitstan

    Can I live?

Lil niggas like you are the reason I pray for hip hop. Cuz yall jsut can’t understand real rap.

  37. Demiks Says:

Oprah only mentioned 50 Cent’s name in what she listens to because of his comments. For her to get at Luda for devaluing women and like a song like “In da Club” and 50 Cent who makes more songs about those subjects then Luda does would be hypocritical.

Kanye is a “safe” rapper. You could play most of his shit at a McDonalds playplace. Jay-Z is another safe rapper, because he’s becoming more concious with his new material… and Mary J. Blige is damn R&B!

If Oprah was against negative black stereotypes, but liked Hip-Hop she would be embracing concious artists like Talib Kweli. She contradicts EVERYTHING she says by saying she likes a song like 50’s “In da Club.”

  38. Demiks Says:

Oprah doesn’t know anything about rap music. She just said this to help prevent her image of catering to “older white people.” Which is one thing 50 got at Oprah for.

  39. Filth Says:

No Disrespect to the lovely Oprah, but that bitch wouldnt know hip hop if it jumped up and bit her on the ass!!

“have you heard the beat to In Da Club?” – Oprah 06

  41. Freaked it to the rap game, Nelly the OG Says:

Come on people. This is the view of a lot of your moms who are like 55 years an older. It’s just a generation gap. Honestly, would you be happy if your mom loved rap as much as you do?

What if she was rapping kiss and styles and even OLD mobb deep. Wouldn’t you feel funny? WHy should oprah like hip hop? she’s old. SHe has no different view than any black women or men at the age of 60.

Music is to set a generation apart from one another. Ya’ll act like Oprah the only black person who has that view? I bet denzel dont listen to Hip Hop. Mike Jord. dont listen to hiphop. WHy should older people have to Like Hip hOp? It wasn’t in their generation.

All Old geysers like Kanye west, and Jay-z because of his business and he looks unthuggish. Again why should they like the hardcore stuff?

  42. Mr Starks Says:

straight up FUCK OPRAH fuck oprah, bitch think she Jesus to black folks or something. idiot bitch

  43. al popoff at'cha Says:

really though all oh has todo is let stedmen start up
this record distribution company for the hip-hoppa’s
and turn this world on its ass and really get our respect
and watch us just on her dic again. ….lol

  44. Demiks Says:

    @Nelly the OG

Oprah pressed Luda because of the negative images in his music. And now she says she likes 50 Cent?… Wow.

No one is saying Oprah should like Hip-Hop, all anybody is trying to get across is thats it not all negative. If she wasn’t so one-sided and biased she would be trying to embrace positive Hip-Hop instead of putting it all in one group and saying bad shit about it.

  45. Freaked it to the rap game, Nelly the OG Says:

Well I think LUDA is an easy target, and not to say anything bad, I just dont think he can get his point across as well as 50 or Jay-z. Thats why Bill O’reilly goes after people like camron and luda. He never will go at a Dr. DRE, ICE t, JAY, even 50(even though he is a bitch) cause they are not some weak minded hip hop artist. He only TALKS to Russell simmons cause russell is one smart guy.

Demiks, okay yeah I see what you’re saying, but thats all people see in hiphop is negative, and they never ever ever go after the white execs who put out the negativity.
I mean hip hop is not supposed to be squeaky clean, cause that would be hypocrisy, cause white people are allowed to have the whole spectrum, like heavy metal, but as soon as blacks make something controversial its all bad. But I do think there has to be a balance. But all the white people are buying the music.

  46. Joggin Says:

Oprah and her audience have personally donated more money to black causes than all of hip hop combined. Oprah’s blacker than any self-hating N word spouting hip-hop uncle Tom who incites violence and self-hate in his people to entertain little white boys!

    Go Oprah!

  47. D. Billz Says:

Nelly the OG… You make some very vaild points about the generation gap between us and Oprah. Because if I stepped in a room and heard my momz sayin’, “you aint a crook son, you just a shook one”, then we’d have a problem. I believe a posted, like, a half a novel on the previous Oprah topic a few weeks about this. Yes, 50 and Luda are easy targets. And I do think she’s frontin’ about actually listening to 50 in her iPod (I mean come on, really…). But instead of bashing the negative aspect of hip hop, why not embrace the positive side? How come artists like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common (who’s from the Chi and much success last year), De La Soul haven’t graced the stage yet? Therefore they could have a intervention about the state of hip hop and what needs to change on a social level. I agree when she said that many of these youngins aren’t as smart as the artist and take most of those words literally. Yeah, it’s easy to say she likes Jay and ‘Ye because they are “safe” and appear unthuggish. But there are plenty of positive artists out there who are speakin’ from the heart and delivering good music. I also agree that Bill O’Reilly pick on artists that he know aren’t built for his demographic and enjoys preyin’ on the underlings. Because in my opinion, Cam’ran embarrased not only Black people but the hip hop community as a whole in that interview. Lets see him have Chuck D or Ice Cube on the show and pull a stunt like that.

I like the fact that Oprah actually responded to the criticism, but I think she has alternative motives.

  48. E From BK Says:

It’s truly amazing people want to say fuck Oprah, but they love gun toting, drug selling, nursery rhyming, womanizing, inmate being, emcees. It’s also amazing that even though she had Kanye on the show she is somehow discredited. If she doesn’t want Luda or 5-0 on the show then so be it. Luda rhymes about being a pimp(although he does not have women on the stroll), having HOES(even though he has a mother) and just silly nursery rhyme shit(even though he is actually a fire emcee who has stripped his skill down a little too far.) 5-0 rhymes about being a pimp(see Luda), bustin guns(that fool aint got no bodies) and also does silly nursery rhyme shit(see Luda). 5-0 goes a step further by saying and doing ignorant shit in front of the media. Oprah is right, that type of shit is negative. Would you feel better if she had Gospel rappers on her show? Prorobably not! The reason why you wouldn’t is because any rapper other than your gun bustin, drug slinging, womanizing emcee is not real. She had on Kanye, if that’s who she likes then it is what it is. 5-0 goes around berrating other people for no reason. That’s some Uncle Tom shit if I ever heard it.

Also, what’s this shit about Jay-Z being safe? Why because he elevated his game? Why because he put himself in a position to capitalize off his own name? He is still that dude(“don’t make me take it to the ol skool”). Yall saying Kanye is safe? Why because he don’t bust guns(remember, your favorite rapper doesn’t either. He just talks about it)? Yall forgot about the Bush controversy? While other fuckas are running arount co signing Bush(5-0), Kanye said fuck that.

  49. Yecklam Says:

There’s no one I respect more than Oprah. Ever since BET’s Bob Johnson lost half his fortune in divorce, she been the richest African American. According to Forbes rich lists she’s been the world’s ONLY black billionaire for the past three straight years. But what’s even more impressive is that in addition to having an audience that is constantly give to black causes like Katrina, women in the Congo & South African orphans, Oprah has personally donated a QUARTER BILLION DOLLARS of her own money to charity according to Business Week.

Now Oprah understands just how powerful the media is. She knows she has a very strong voice and she wants to use it intelligently and in a way that advances black people not sets them back. Thus Oprah uses her show to promote progressive hip-hop artists like Kanye West, has chosen Toni Morrison for book club more times than any other author, and has brought a large of body of black work to the screen and stage like The Color Purple, Beloved, Their Eyes were watching God, Their are no children here, The women of Brewster Place etc.

But Oprah is afraid that if she promotes hip hop artists that use the N word, promote black on black violence, and demean women, she is empowering people who will be bad role models for black youth and perpetuate the stereotype that black men are thugs.

It’s bad enough that so many African Americans subscribe to criminal culture, but a lot of black Africans watch Oprah too so she has to be careful what kind of people she promotes. Oprah knows how many lives were sacrificed so that a black woman could be the Queen of All Media and so she has a responsibility to use her power progressively!

If all Oprah cared about was being hip and gaining ratings in the more important younger demographics she would have promoted all kinds of hip-hop. But Oprah believes in social responsibility!

  51. Dumb Nigga Says:

I just wan’t to know how she doesn’t think Luda’s music is acceptable but she admits to likeing 50 Cent! 50’s music(when he’s not doing r&b tracks) is much worse than anything Luda does.

  52. Justo Says:

Well you know I respect Oprah but EdLover was actually sucking mad dick on this.I heard the whole interview on http://www.Playahata.com today and saw Ed picture licking on Oprah ass but as long as he aint kissing the ass of Rosie O Donell or Barbara Walters.

  53. Demiks Says:

@Yecklam, E from BK, etc, etc.

    – Oprah hard pressed Luda, but said she likes 50 Cent… Now c’mon!

    – Kanye says the “N word” just as much as any “gangsta rapper.” (With some exceptions)

    – Oprah (before this interview) see’s Hip-Hop as all negative, BUT there are artists who promote positive messages like The Roots.

    – If she doesn’t want to empower negative black stereotypes in Hip-Hop, why doesn’t she invite someone like Chuck D on her show. She doesn’t have to embrace negative Hip-Hop, but she could atleast realize its not all negative. Someone with her following and pull could have a positive rapper go multi-platinum. (See what she does to authors? She makes them millionaires! Those people read those books because Oprah reccomends them.)

  54. bizzzy Says:

I find the endorsement of 50 ill and misguided. Based on her track record, I find it hard to believe that she would support

However your suggestion is Brilliant, and is one of the most CONTRUCTIVE comments to come out of this entire suggestion.
Shi*t im made that my a*s ain’t think of it.

  56. E From BK Says:

    @Demiks

When she said she liked 5-0 she was only referring to the song she likes. I don’t if she even cares anything about 5-0. He is no threat to her. Kanye does use the “N” word, but so have a thousand other “positive” emcees over the years. So what is your point? Does he talk about blastin’ his brother? I bet that is what Oprah is concerned with. Ask me how I know. It’s because I have had countless conversations with my own mother about the current state of Hip Hop and she hates the negativity as well. She even misses the days when there was more of a variety and when the negative emcees were not the norm. Also, Oprah probably does see “most” of Hip Hop negative probably because 90% of what is played on the radio is negative. Again, Oprah is a grown ass woman who’s interraction with Hip Hop probably does not go past the radio or MTV.

Also, if you want to see people like Chuck D on her show then you should support those people. Oprah did not help in making Kanye and multi-platinum rapper. He was that because people went out and bought the record. When was the last time you bought a PE album. Did you buy the last one with Paris? Did you buy New Whirl Odor(which by the way is a classic album)? Probably not.

E From BK, I’m not a P.E. fan, never said I was. It was an example, I was trying to say Oprah should have a positive rapper on her show if she thinks it’s all negative.

I said Kanye says the “N word” just as much as any gangsta rapper as a respone to Joggin’s comment. Look here:
    http://nahright.com/2006/05/12/oprah-listens-to-50-cent/#comment-44891

FTR, most of the books reccomended by Oprah on her show are by less known authors. Alot of them become big after they’ve been on Oprah’s book club. Couldn’t she have the same pull with rap? I’m not saying her audience are exactly rap fans, but most people are followers, and wait for someone else to tell them what to like. If 50 Cent never had a co-sign from Dr. Dre and Eminem, would he be this large?

To me, Oprah can’t complain about rap music if she isn’t doing anything to prevent it from becoming so negative. (Boycotting all rappers from her show doesn’t count.)

This is somehow relevant. I met some dude awhile back, he just happened to be white. He asked me why I was talking “proper” and that all black people are suppose to talk like idiots. He actually believed that all black people were suppose to be ignorant, hate spittin, uneducated, etc. This is exactly what Oprah is doing with Hip-Hop.

  63. E From BK Says:

    @Demiks

She has had a rapper on her show. Why would you say she didn’t? Wasn’t Kanye on? Look, I understand your argument, but for the most part Oprah’s show is to talk about what’s hot. Her having lesser known authors on the show is the exception. It’s an exception because for the most part entertainment is not driven by literature. Sadly enough, since the advent of the Internet readership has dwindled greatly. I have a friend that owns a publishing company http://www.lcn.pub and it is rare that a book will drive any aspect of entertainment. She had Kanye on because he is popular. She has entertainers when they are promoting a new project. The point I was making with PE goes for any rapper you may want to see featured. We as concumers have to support the positive aspect of Rap. If we say it’s hot then other people will love it.

  68. Demiks Says:

E From BK, I never said she never had a rapper on her show. And Kanye isn’t really the most positive rapper. I mean he performed “Gold Digger” on her show when he was there. All that is, is a safe version of a Ludacris song. lol. Still the same shit, the whole “women just out for money” subject.
