Congratulations New York!

mtv_top10.jpg

If it’s ok with Field Mob and their legions of fans, I’d like to congratulate The City of New York for holding down 7 of the spots on MTV’s Top 10 Greatest M.C.’s list. Before you purists get your Ipod headphones all in a bunch, I’m well aware that MTV hasn’t had any credibilty on anything hip hop related since…well, ever. But the fact remains that the names on this list are mostly accurate even if, as Bol pointed out, they’re hopelessly out of order.

I have to admit that I wasn’t entirely sure if it was a good idea to celebrate in public like this, for fear that I may unintentionally offend the delicate sensibilities of those of you who have made it your life’s mission to stamp out any and all hometown pride displayed by a New Yorker.  It may sound crazy, but you have to be careful of what you say in this age where a simple statement like "Let’s bring New York back!" can be misconstrued as a declaration of war.

1. Jay-Z
2. Tupac
3. Notorious B.I.G.
4. Rakim
5. Nas
6. KRS-One
7. Big Daddy Kane
8. Ice Cube
9. Eminem
10. LL Cool J

I guess giving Jay-Z the top spot may ensure that they get first dibs on his first post retirement video, interview, etc., but on a list that includes KRS-One and Rakim, it’s just plain old blasphemy. I would reorganize the list to what I think it should be, but I won’t fool myself into thinking anybody would actually care. I personally hate making these lists, but I have no problem tearing them apart when they’re wrong.

Oh, and I know that technically, Pac should be scored in the New York column as well, but Cube looked all lonely over there with the whole West Coast on his back, so I figured I’d throw Cali a bone. (<— That was some of that classic New York arrogance we’re loved for the whole world over, but you already knew that didn’t you.)

Update: Go here and see some clips of the MTV ‘Brain Trust’ arguing about the list. All of you who complained that Scarface didn’t make it might be interested to see how close he came. MTV is airing the whole show on Sunday at 3:00.

since I’m old school, I’ll always say: RAKIM hands down end of story the bullshit stops here.

  7. MadeInMilwaukee Says:

Yo Eskay, why is it blasphemy for Jay to be above Rakim? If I was to make a list both Jay and Nas would be above Ra. I feel sometimes Ra is a little overated. He still top ten, just not number one.

  8. BEASTNIGGA Says:

Thats bullshit Wheres Field Mob !!!!!!!!

i lived in ga for a long time. i hope these niggas never make a list like this

*grabs get in headlock and scrapes knuckles vigiously on scalp, yelling ” I GONE TEACH YOU SOME SENSE”!!!!!

  9. tyronebiggums Says:

its a fairly good list but defintely a bit out of order. and defintely a real good look for ny so you got 1 and a half cali dudes one midwest dude and where’s dude writing that book ‘it started in the south’ now.

  10. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

Here is the way I feel the list should go…

    1. Notorius B.I.G.
    2. Nas
    3. Jay- Z
    4. Tupac
    5. Scarface
    6. The Old Eminem
    7. Rakim
    8. LL Cool J
    9. KRS-One
    10. AZ

    Just my opinion

  11. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

As for Pac being #4… What can I say I’m a BIG fan

  12. eskay Says:

damn Blood, it’s rare that you come across a down south dude who puts Big ahead of Pac.

  13. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

I know talent when I see it Eskay… And BIG would shit on pac

  14. MadeInMilwaukee Says:

I would put Biggie number one also. He been dead ten years and nobody has caught up yet.

  15. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

The only reason Pac is ahead of Scarface is because I didn’t want a violent backlash… I’m so not a Pac fan… But I respect him.

  16. iKON Says:

MTV’s list is AIGHT. Jay is not #1, He’s top 10.

    Here’s how I feel it shoulda went…

    1) Notorious BIG
    2) Rakim
    3) GZA/Genius
    4) KRS One
    5) Nas
    6) Pac
    7) BIg L
    8) Big Daddy Kane
    9) Prodigy (from 90s mobb deep)
    10) Jay-Z

  17. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

    *forgot about Big L*

Drops LL off of the list*

  18. eskay Says:

    >>I know talent when I see it Eskay… And BIG would shit on pac

I’m glad you said it. just watch out, you know when the Pac stans show up there’s gonna be drama. and Pac stans are nooo joke.

  19. E From BK Says:

You have to put MC NY where he supposed to be.

  20. iKON Says:

    I’m sure they did.

Unfortunatly nobodies not considering top 20,000 at the moment.

  21. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

    @ Eskay

I know man… Those Pac stans are violent they aren’t like the 50 stans… Pac stans scream “Thug Life” and hit you with things (no homo) plus 45% of them have Tupac and/or his tattoos on them(that’s the gayest stan shit ever)

    *ducks for cover*

  22. c0l0mb14n1116 Says:

im from down south, pac was good but biggie = MONSTER , they missed big L on da list, & jay is good but not #1, Ohh yeah & the boy papoose shoulda been third after B.I.G & Big L

  23. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

*votes Da Posta Boy into the top 10*

  24. c0l0mb14n1116 Says:

*wonders why 50 isn’t on there*

    Oh yeah!!!!

    *realizes 50 is a r&b singer*
*also realizes 50 is a cop*
    *snitch*
    *rat*
    the list goes on………….

“GRODT was a classic, now u rich n tryin 2 die, u a dumb bastard”

i cnt get that line outa ma head from shots fired!!!

  25. iKON Says:

Papoose has quite possibly one of the worst flows I’ve ever listened too.

I cant belive people said he reminds them of Big L, He’s far from L.
A majority of his rhymes are fullfilled with cliche.

Lyricaly he’s weak like radio clock speakers..

Papoose top 10.. maybe in 2096.

  26. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

^^ classic comeback line it should go in the diss track’s hall of fame along with checkmate

  27. E From BK Says:

    @iKON

You don’t even know who MC NY is do you?

  28. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

*Drops jaw @ da papoose hater* (no homo)

  29. eskay Says:

Pap is the nicest unsigned M.C. in new york period, but top 10! sorry but he has a looong way to go. In my opinion Eminem shouldn’t even be on this list, not because he isn’t lyrically on par with everybody else, but because he hasn’t been in the game long enough.

  30. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

The new Eminem wouldn’t come close to that list… The new Em is like luda and puma…. So commercial

  31. 757defpoet Says:

great emcees have great albums…or at least two….dat means eminem’s ass doesnt need to be on the list……

as far as that “bring new york back”…it’s obvious kay slay and ghost and hating…you see how they diss the snap music……it’s all in fun….most new york cats are too thugged out to dance and have a good time…think about it….

this comin from a cat who listen to everything from Jlive, MF doom, de la, kanye, murs, little brother, tribe, dead prez to jeezy, devin the dude, 3 6 since 97, to fab, jigga, and nas……

niggas say little side shit…yall saw that kay slay concert…..kay slay said something bout atlanta and dreds….he dumb as fuck….i dont hate on shit and i can see that new york cats hate…..all i have to say is ghost jumped on that g-dep single and it wasnt a problem…and harlem shake is the gayest shit out…

  32. LEESLAUGHTR Says:

Where the fuck is my man Darkman X in this shit. Hes done much better more then half of these mc’s..damn.

  33. eskay Says:

a couple of people have said it, but in my opinion if you think the Harlem shake is worse then that godforsaken snap dance you’re out of your mind. at least the harlem shake is funny to watch.

  34. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

    *harlem shakes the milk jug*

  35. E From BK Says:

Chill Eskay, now niggas is going to have dance beef. Yo, the snake was this………yo, the wop was that………………yo, what about the electric slide……………that shit was cool, but the prep………………

These emotional cats are gonna be fighting over that…..watch

  36. eskay Says:

    *snap dances out of thread*

  37. eskay Says:

    lol @ E

I know son, that’s why I didn’t say shit…but niggas keep saying “what bout the Harlem shake!”

  38. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

*remembers and does the Cabage patch*

  39. c0l0mb14n1116 Says:

^^ i go 4 da harlem shake 2, dat shyt is funny,
yo eskay, u seen dat video of juve airing out baby & weezy @ kay slay’z ?, is on tha profile of dat cat wit the dame dash grease talkin video & dat benzino shyt. on youtube.

  40. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

    *also the running man*

    If that wasn’t a dumb dance I don’t know what was…

  41. kanye sucks Says:

    How is jay number one?

just because you shout yourself out in every song as the greatest doesnt qualify you as such

  42. eskay Says:

*does the running man over to youtube*

  43. BEASTNIGGA Says:

*pops fingers , while harlem shakin, shit don’t go 2gether and don’t look right*

sits back down in chair wondering why pac keeps droping lower with each post?

Because people are reminded that he is MC NY.

  45. smokie Says:

Jay should never come before Nas – and Pac should never come before Big. Love Pac (I’m from the South) but Big was sick with it. And wtf happened to Em?

Scarface should be in LL’s spot.

  46. E From BK Says:

Why are people so willing to freeze out LL. Yall need to check the catalogue. Nobody, I mean NOBODY has the catalogue of LL. This guy switched up his style countless times, ended a few careers, taught the game that it was important to rhyme for the chicks, spit hot 16s for daysand he’s been doing this shit since he was 16!

  47. BEASTNIGGA Says:

don’ even count when he was mc new york, he was just cutting his teeth then.

    count 2pac and mackaveli.

this is where you get it raw

  48. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

On which list should scarface replace LL?

    My list or the thread’s?

  49. E From BK Says:

Just saying, that’s where he got his game. He even said that himself. He dedicated a song to it.

  50. tyronebiggums Says:

    3. Chuck D
    4. BIG
    5. Pac
    6. Ice Cube
    7. Big Daddy Kane

  58. dCs Says:

yo where the fuck was nelly on this list?

haha just playin. E from BK, i think we finally agree on somethin. good list, but i never was a big fan of Chuck D. put Big Pun in that and you got yourself a list…

as for smokie, youd take LL out of the list?! you crazy man.

  59. Ana Says:

Wow. Jay-Z is not number one. (And tupc does not deserve to be in the top ten! That really grosses me out.) Ice CUbe? Not. I loved “who’s the mack,” but he lost all respect with that “race card” bullshit. WTF?

Is MTV admitting that they don’t play the “best” music? What a revalation!
Interesting that they didn’t put Snoop or Dre in the top ten. I heard that “Nothin but a G thang” was the first rap video to be played outside of the Yo MTV Raps ghetto. MTV must not have made this list based on what they choose to play…when was the last time they played a KRS 1 video?!
If they were being honest, and made thier decisions based on what music they choose to promote, the MTV top 10 list would look something like:

    Snoop Dogg
    Puffy
    Eminem
    B.I.G.
    Jay-Z
    Missy Elliot
    Nelly
    50 Cent
    LL Cool J
    Pharrell and Silent Bob

And why not? Thanks in large partto MTV’s patronage, these are the artists that have had the largest impact on American society as a whole.

  60. Ana Says:

If this was really about the best lyricists with the best delivery, the Clipse would have been on top of the list.

  61. eskay Says:

Aight fuck it, here’s my list

    1. Nelly
    2. Chingy
    3. D4L
    4. DFB
    5. Jim Jones
    6. Young M.C.
    7. Hammer
    8. Marky Mark
    9. Benzino
    10. Andy Milonakis

    Honorable mention:

    Skee-Lo
    50 Cent
    Vanilla Ice

  62. eskay Says:

the cover of the new Mass Appeal with the Clipse is fire

  63. e-dubbs Says:

BIG over Big Daddy Kane is pretty damn stupid.. But yeah, of course NY gonna dominate the list.. We started this shit.. Be mad.

Remove Eminem and put Slick Rick please.

  64. c0l0mb14n1116 Says:

  67. Kool Dude Says:

I really love when situations like these come up. When these list of the best MC’s come out and the south is ignored. But we know in our hearts that we have legendary rappers down here so it dosent bother me any. Field Mob didnt haft to say what they said, but it didnt look that serious to me though. So, much power to New York for taking the first 7 slots!

Thats why I really fuck with Phil’s blog because it is a Dirty South perspective. I come on here often to see how the south is being bashed and prey for these niggas.

So, here are my Top 10 MC’s of all time:

    1. Tupac
    2.Scarface
    3. Rakim

    ^^^^^^
    Its a conspiracy…

  81. Darth Cipher Says:

pun was good… but do you seriously think he’s top ten worthy???

  82. DES Says:

I think I’ll be one of the first to say I agree with Jay Z being at number one. People might put LL and Jay-Z together in the longevity catagory but it’s a little different if you ask me. LL keeps putting out albums that do reasonably well, Jay-Z managed to remain one of the most successful, relevant, and critically acclaimed rappers since the start of his career. Nas has done as much as well but not on the level Jay has. I’d still put those two at 1 and 2 respectively though, just on their careers alone, song for song they’ve probably put out the most quality.

  83. Darth Cipher Says:

i wish big L was still alive man… dude had so much talent, he would annihilate most of these rappers today

  84. dCs Says:

Eskay, andy milonakis is the fuckin shit, dont deny that fat 30-year old white gary coleman his respect. his youtube raps are the funniest shit…

by the way rube, i mentioned Pun…!

  85. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

*Wonder how someone could scream thug life yet have a nose ring*

NOTHING IS THUG ABOUT A NOSE RING!!!!

  86. Darth Cipher Says:

i think nas is alot deeper then jay-z though… i cant say jay-z for #1, cause its not just marketing appeal, thats the last thing i care about, i wonna know the things your telling me arent just things that make you think your trying to impress me, like most rappers do today, jay-z’ got alot of deep songs but at the same time its like he’s still got raps that are stricly made to impress me, like i dont know he’s succesful… its like i tell people about mike jones, stop telling us your name we know what it is, and stop repaeting yourself, were not deaf we heard you the first time… that why i deleted his album off my computer after i heard 3 songs on it… it made me sick… he kept saying his fucking cell phone number( ok i drifted off topic) anywho, my point was jay-z is good but he’d be better if he didnt have songs that were so, hey look at what i can do or got

  87. Darth Cipher Says:

man we cant do a top 10 of all time… cause i wonna change my list now
too many good emcees to rate them 1-10

  88. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

*wants to remove tupac from list*

  89. Darth Cipher Says:

people i found really underrated in hiphop for too long was outkast… specially andre 3000… when he gets on them raps, dudes crazy, plus he got the speed rapping too… fuck now i wonna add him to the list… see what im saying fuck man

  90. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:

Oh sorry i meant Mike Jones. His lyricism is so great. When he talks about the purple drink, 84’s, and other things that he says in his songs(like his phone number) i wonder why he hasnt been mentioned as the best rapper alive.

  130. Phil Says:

Eskay knows who’s missing from this list, and it doesn’t have anything to do with Field Mob. Here’s a hint though for other people lacking Eskay’s genius…

There’s an A and an E in his name followed by some numbers. He used to go by the alius “Hollywood Cole”… But it doesn’t matter though; when you’re a part of the not only highest selling Hip-Hop duo of all time but also the most profound, owning multiple grammys including one for album of the year (which no Hip-Hop act has ever held…), a piece of shit MTV list doesn’t really amount to shit.

P.S. I’m happy to hear he’s rapping again on the new album and check for the upcoming Gangsta Grillz. Peace…

  131. Curtis Jackson Says:

Oh shit! I revealed myself! Yes the worst rapper out right now is here…..Who wants to sing a melody with me? G-G-G-G-GAY UNIT!!!

    *Breaking News*

Spider Loc was seen wearing the official “G-unit Crips” colors……THE RAINBOW FLAG. Yes the official gang flag for the “G-unit Crips” is the rainbow. How did he think of something so gay? Maybe he’s gay?

In other news Vanilla Ice was seen smoking crack, its rumored he was smoking it with Whitney Houston.

And it is also rumored that 30 Cent is planning on dropping another dime(watch out if you value your freedom! 30 might go after you next!)

  158. Da Newz Man Says:

Oh and K-Fed’s new album(the life of a bum) is going to be in stores on the year 2050. So get ready, he’s going to make Vanilla Ice and Marky Mark sound like good rappers i hear.

  159. Da Newz Man Says:

Excuse me on the K-Fed album release date, its actually the winter of 2070. Sorry for the mistake, i’m sure the two people that are going to buy it(K-Fed and someone he pays to buy it) are very upset right now.

I agree as well. The complexity comes in where you’re comparing apples and oranges. Pac and Hov are known and loved for 2 totally different reasons, they have 2 totally different styles.

D-12 member Proof was shot and killed in Detroit earlier this morning (April 11) at an after hours club on Eight Mile Road.

The second man shot may have been fellow D-12 group member Bizarre, but police have not released the victims identity as of press time.

Proof, born Deshaun Hotlon, was murdered at the Triple C club around 4:30 am this morning and another man was seriously wounded, both with gunshots to the head.

    …forgive me if it is a rumor…saw it on a credible site…

  176. Foekist Says:

Hov was more commercial, in a time where the type of money and open mindedness towards hip hop is bigger than it’s ever been. Pac was in his prime in the “tweener” stages, where his lyrics and swag were still viewed as a threat to mainstream. Hov came at the right time, after the path had already been made.

    makaveli
all classics before his death. and to me some of them albums after that was tight 2 like r u still down? & until the end of time. music is a complex thing to rate if you go on rating systems ( like the 5 mics system) anyway
this debate will never die so everybody should have their own list and leave it at that. as for being a pac stan, naw dog real just reconize real it don’t matter if you got a nose ring who gives a fuck honestly? pac stood for the people theres no denying that.

pac was a real dude (my brother use to hag wit when he lived in baltimore)when he first did juice he came to baltimore threw cookouts for the kids in the hood not at dru hill park(no bodyguards)he wasent trippin that he had a movie he was the same nigga and it reflect in his music. nigga can say what they want but when my nigga talk about the greatest rappers we don’t include pac cause he was more than a rapper he was above #1 (my opinion) and that’s a no brainer

    >I swear to God, if you don’t take common of of that list……..

  198. Plug industries Says:

    ……The landlord is smokin somethin……

  199. The Landlord Says:

    @plug
I struggled with common too…He’s a personal favorite, but maybe not eligible for top-10
*Landlord remembers how pissed he was when he bought Electric Circus, and submits to Plug’s request*

  200. joe 88 Says:

    @ plug

yes i can, if i was to know biggie i would still say pac was my favorite
that does’nt have anything to do with the debate at hand. Like i say all the time good music is good music and pac made good music.

  201. joe 88 Says:

^^^^^ this thread is 2x platinum. “holla if you hear me” -2pac

Yeah Electric Circus was some Electric Bullshit. Water for Chocolate (or whatever) was a nice CD though.

    —————

    Ni99a please!

  210. Foekist Says:

… on second thought, it depends on what you determine that on.. Record sales? There are so many different variable that can come into play. That’s why I don’t believe in ranking MC’s.

  211. Mr. Sarcastic Says:

Andre 3000 was on the honarble mentions list, but Jay-z number 1 you got to be fuckin kiddin me on that one. Tupac is the illest to EVER do it.

  212. G-town G Says:

Tupac should have been first on this list ppl, this is sad. Jay-z is cold but he aint betta than Pac

    >> Like I told the other dude. pac only had 2 classics

  214. Bugsytheboss Says:

I agree 2pac should be #1 in fact this is how the list should go

    #1 2pac
    #2 Biggie
    #3 50 cent
    #4 Jay-z
    #5 Rakim
    #6 Ice Cube
    #7 Big Daddy Kane
    #8 LL Cool J
    #9 KRS-ONE
    #10 Em

  215. eskay Says:

^ lol at 50 being # 3. Get that nigga outta here, he don’t even deserve honorable mention.

  216. The Landlord Says:

2Pac…great artsist, becoming a great actor, larger than life persona, VERY influential, tons of charisma on the mike and on screen(no homo), BUT……somewhat overrated as an MC…never really switched up his flow and didnt display much clever wordplay or lyricism…not hating though because he probably is the most influential rapper ever…

  217. Mr. Sarcastic Says:

    50 cent # 3

    LOL

    ^^
I heard when you sing on your hooks and make shit songs, you never have the chance to become a top 10 rapper. So you might as well quit day dreaming about 50 Cent being better then all of them. He only had one good cd(not including his previous work before GRODT, which you cant actually count anyways) THE MASSACRE WAS TERRIBLE!

  219. Mr. Sarcastic Says:

    Top 10 worst MC’s ever:

    1. Mike Jones- argubarly the worst to ever do it!
    2. Paul Wall
    3. 50 cent
    4. D4l
    5. Dfb
    6. Vanila Ice
    7. Camron “You got it” The worst diss track in the history of Hip Hop
    8. Jim Jones
    9. Chingy
    10. Nelly

Eskay 50 cent did make my top 3 though!

  220. Bugsytheboss Says:

Landlord you need to pick up Makevali and listen real careful before you speak up on 2pac’s lyrical skill. he was better flow-wise than over half the rapper’s on my list

  221. Stephen C. Says:

I was clowning on you the other day about Project Pat, but truth is I’m open to anything, all I need is one person to tell me it’s hot and I’ll listen. It’s just that all I really know about Project Pat is that Chickenheads shit he had back in the day and them corny ass ads he used to have in the Source. Of course most Southern artists had them same lame ads back in the day so that doesn’t really mean shit.

  228. Bugsytheboss Says:

One of the biggest rappers of all time does not deserve a spot at the top 10 greatest M.C.s i think i smell hate in the air

  229. Da Newz Man Says:

    @bugsytheboss

Pat got his own style, which is hard to come by these days…Plus with Three 6’s beats he can never go wrong…now dat he’s back in the game and three 6 has garnered all this attention…there gonna push him as the next big thing comin’ out of memphis…even though he’s been puttin down 4 a minute.

    Southern MC’s to Check for

    Project Pat……”Mista Don’t Play, Everythang’s Workin”
Fiend…..”There’s one in Every Family”, “The Rock Show”
T-Rock….”his album wasn’t as good, but check any songs he had wit 36″
Devin the Dude…”damn just about every album devin kicks some shit”

Grab old copies of “I’m serious – T.I.” and “6661: When The smoke Clears”

Anybody know what happedn to – T-Rock…the cat from ATL

  231. Bugsytheboss Says:

No but he has had the biggest impact on hip hop since 2pac was around. Plus you can’t just judge 50’s mainstream music you got to look at all the mixtapes he done business ventures in just a short time (mind you his career is not over unlike must of the other rappers on the list)

  232. Da Newz Man Says:

Yeah but remember, Vanilla Ice and Hammer were popular just like 50, and had alot of money, just like 50. So technically what you’re saying is, rappers like that should be top 10 material.

  240. Stephen C. Says:

    lol @ plug

  241. Da Newz Man Says:

But, if you remember Vanilla Ice was one of the first rappers to sell out, JUST LIKE 50! So basically what i’m saying is, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and 50 aka 30 Cent, will never be considered the best rappers, all becuase they had money and shit, and did commercials.

  242. Da Newz Man Says:

*all becuase they had money and shit, and did commercials. *

I said that wrong, i meant to say all becuase they had money doesnt mean their the best!

  243. Bugsytheboss Says:

M.C. Hammer and Vannila Ice never had a impact on rap like 50 did when he came out plus both of those dudes are broke now. 50 got lyrical skills why can’t you just admit that!!!!! stop judging people by they radio songs and not look at the big picture. If Jay-Z is on the list 50 should too what has jigga did that 50 aint done or bout to do????

  244. Stephen C. Says:

*Lowers his head in shame after Bugsy’s comment

  247. Bugsytheboss Says:

Stephan C if you knew anything about hip hop you would know there would be no Jay-Z if Biggie didn’t get killed in L.A. you dumb fuck!!!!!
everyother word out of jigga’s mouth is a biggie verse so if your going by sells “yes” he deserves it but on creditability and lyrics that nigga is still living off of biggie’s life then he had to do some shady shit in order to steal roca fella from Dame Dash so no respect for GAY-Z

    WTF
50 never made a reasonable doubt type album
Jay-Z never comprimize lyrics for radio sales( even through jay made commerical songs he was lyrical on them too ‘not 50’)
Jay-Z never used beef as a marketing tactic
Jay-Z never took his shirt off as a marketing tactic
Jay-Z never said “i love you like a fat kid loves cake” EVER!!!
You 50 stans will do anything just to bring curtis up, he’s not in the top 10 period. Get over it, hell he’s not in the top 100 GRODT is not a classic go back & listen to poor lil rich, people give him too much credit for that cd it was a breath of fresh air at the time but damn.

  250. Plug industries Says:

Bugsey and Luis are both HOMOsexuals!!!

Big would have sizzled out because being black and ugly doenst sell any more……

Plus he was getting fucked by puff

  251. Luis Says:

to the asshole above me^ hey asshole NO ONE brought up 50 on this thread, it was a 50 hater who brought his name up you fagg!!!!!

  252. joe 88 Says:

no biggie versus were quoted on reasonable doubt (the best jay-z album)

  253. eskay Says:

    >>no biggie versus were quoted on reasonable doubt (the best jay-z album)

^I was just coming in here to say that. So Bugsy I know you’re arguments are not at all reasonable, but let me ask you this. Do you actually think that if you deleted every rhyme of somebody elses from Jay’s catalouge, that he still isn’t a phenomenal lyricist? Tell me that with a straight face yo.

  254. Luis Says:

“Big would have sizzled out because being black and ugly doenst sell any more”

HAHAHAHA I am not going to comment on this asshole’s sentence…..you set yourself up, I hope people take notice about what you just said hahahahaha Hey, PLUG this up your ass you prick

  255. Plug industries Says:

    Am I wrong?

  256. Bugsytheboss Says:

PLUG isnt it your bed time. becuzz your comments are straight up pre-school. go watch cartoon network or something but please no more dumb comments. and for eskay nobody said he didnt have a little flow but the nigga wouldn’t be shit without biggie’s guidence. Plus real niggas dont turn on they best friends over a label

  257. Stephen C. Says:

    @ Bugsy and Luis…

*pushes the ignore button…and listens to resonable doubt, while dumping ashes from his L onto “The Massacre’s” cd case… all the while wishing Bugsy’s keyboard wil break.

  258. eskay Says:

    >>the nigga wouldn’t be shit without biggie’s guidence

so now it’s his guidance. so which is it, he stole every line from Biggie, or Biggie ‘guided’ him?

I reality, Biggie didn’t guide shit, cuz he was too busy getting jerked by Puff for his publishing. Meanwhile Jay has risen to heights Big never would have if he was still alive…

  259. eskay Says:

lol @ Jay having a ‘little flow’ you’s a funny dude Bugsy

  260. Plug industries Says:

Com’ on dog I live this hip hop ish

No homo, but name the last physically ugly nigga to go platnum.

  261. Stephen C. Says:

    mike jones

  262. Bugsytheboss Says:

You keep saying resonable Doubt like that album made his career when you know damn well the vol.2 cd (after biggie died) was his biggest album today) remember this is the same guy who did a track with ja rule and amil so jigga has his fair share of garbage records and albums(black album, blueprint)

  263. Stephen C. Says:

    *pushes ignore button harder

  264. Plug industries Says:

NO HOMO, Mike jone looks human. I’m talkin b.i.g. ugly,NO HOMO

    did I say no hme

  265. eskay Says:

    >>jigga has his fair share of garbage records and albums(black album, blueprint)

see thats why you lose all credibility, cuz those 2 albums are among his best. ok, whatever, forget it…go back to sucking off Curtis.

  266. eskay Says:

    ok, wait, one more thing.

    >>You keep saying resonable Doubt like that album made his career

nobody is saying that dog, learn how to read. even if Vol 2 is his biggest record to date, Reasonable Doubt was his most acclaimed. In my opinion Vol 2 is his worst album except for maybe Dynasty.

  267. Bugsytheboss Says:

I think STEPHAN C wants jigga’s dick sucking lips all over him cuzz you are acting like a lil homo right now. and for PLUG you are the biggest gayest flaming fag i know to be on a website judging the way dudes look

  268. Stephen C. Says:

Hey Bugsy I apologize…accept this as a peace offering:

    http://www.rowell.de/assets/images/Pressing_Button_2.gif

  269. The Landlord Says:

    @Plug
…does that mean Hell Rell should just give up and kill himself now?
    …cee-lo?
    …craig mack? (U. O. A. T.)
…crunchy black? (does he even rap?)
…MFDOOM ?(he dont wear a mask for nothing)

while i dont want to sound homo (no homo), judging another man’s appearance, i see your point. The industry is so superficial now, you almost have to have some kind of visual appeal to get on. Spittability is becoming secondary to image now.

  270. MaKeiba Says:

My first reaction in reading this was to get angry at the comments and the start of the blog itself. In thinking about the list and the people chosen I’m in agreement with the list, I’v been listening to hip hop since 1980 and I have a varied list of hip hop artists who are good in my opinion. The problem I have is that true hip hop the way that we define it today was born in NY and therefore it would be crazy not to acknowledge the fact that a good portion of the best hip hop artists would come from NY. My problem is that New Yorkers in general hate to admit that the majority of popular hip hop out today listened to NATIONALLY is from down South. The artists moving the most units NATIONALLY right now are from down South. And I’ll be honest, the music that is getting play now doesn’t compare to the hip hop that was being produced just 5 years ago, much less 10 or 15 years ago, but regardless people should give the South their due, the way everyone gave New York their due back in the day. And on a sidebar, the statement about Hip Hop origins starting in the south is true because R&B and Hip Hop are descendants of Blues and Jazz which were born in the South. Respect.

  271. eskay Says:

    >>the statement about Hip Hop origins starting in the south is true because R&B and Hip Hop are descendants of Blues and Jazz which were born in the South. Respect.

well I don’t know about that. at least not the way you stated it. what you should say is “the South had a large influence on hip hop as we know it today” Cuz really hip hop is derived more from Funk and Reggae than Jazz and Blues. Trust me, we already has this argument…

  272. MaKeiba Says:

Funny how they don’t call it F and R though……..

  273. eskay Says:

well R&B and hip hop are two totally different things. I’ll give ya’ll R&B 100%

  274. Ironman[USA] Says:

Eh this list is messed up of course. I do think it’s better than the last dreadful list but it still sucks. My list:

    1] Rakim
    2] KRS-One
3] Big Daddy Kane [Seriously people how do you forget this man?!]
    4] Nas
    5] Kool G. Rap
    6] Slick Rick
    7] Common
    8] Chuck D
    9] Ice Cube
    10] LL Cool J

People I’d love to put on, but can’t. Big L, Guru, Notorious B.I.G. Pac is way overrated I’d put him at like #12. People don’t call me a hater. Because I’ve listened to every legend possible with an UNBIASED OPINION, and these are the results. People who were growing up ’86-’93 that were from the ages 14+ at that time. Would defiantly agree with me, but everyone in here is just too young. [By the way I’m 17, but have “studied” the history]

  275. eskay Says:

    >>but everyone in here is just too young. [By the way I’m 17, but have “studied” the history]

^get a load of this guy.

it’s all good though player, cuz your list is on point.

  276. MaKeiba Says:

I was 16 in 86 and I still think that Biggie and Pac should definitely be in the top 10, although I give you mad credit for recognizing my personal favorite the “Big Daddy Kane”!!

  277. Stephen C. Says:

My Favorite Albums (no order/no rank)

  278. Bugsytheboss Says:

    YO MAKEIBA says,
artists moving the most units NATIONALLY right now are from down South.

are you closet smoking at night or something because one 50 cent album= the whole fuckin south’s rap budgets, album sales, endorsements, promotion team all in one so stop dick ridin the south so hard

  279. bo0st yAa Says:

these idiots at mtv still got jay, pac, biggie, and big l. how the fuck can any of those 4 not be in the top 10…..and putting pun in honorable mention??? he should be on the list just from the twinz verse

  280. MaKeiba Says:

Are YOU CLOSET SMOKING OR WHAT?!! Name one other artist from the NY besides 50 moving more than 200k units in a week and truth be told no body in NY is truly claiming 50 anyway, with him living in CT. News flash TI just moved 500k units last week. Wake up and speak the truth!!!

  281. Bugsytheboss Says:

Jay-Z is in the top ten becuzz he did alot for the rap game i mean he had to sneak diss(50) hate on niggas(nas) and use niggas(dame) to get where he at (big) today otherwise i wouldn’t put him in their either

  282. MaKeiba Says:

Better yet how much did 50’s movie “get rich or die trying” make in comparison to “ATL”‘s opening last week. Here goes another one, speaking out of pride and ignorance……

  283. Bugsytheboss Says:

Please dont, now you want to compare 50 cent to t.i. must i say more. you had a better chance when it was 50 vs. the south
Get rich soundtrack went platinum lets see what the “atl” soundtrack do and for the movie you wont see it in the top ten by next week so once again stop ridin the south’s dick so much

  284. eskay Says:

    >>Name one other artist from the NY besides 50 moving more than 200k units in a week

^ because southern artists do those numbers all the time right?

  285. Terror Says:

YO lol wtf is this. 50 cent is being mentioned on the top ten list. If Pun did not make it, surely as fuckin hell 50 will neva see the bright of day. 50 cent is not an MC just like Gay-Z and Biggie. Gay and BIG are rappers and as for 50 cent…i seriously dont know where that nigga lands not even R&B. Hands down Pun is the best lyricist and then comes my homie Big L. Yo i dont even know y u niggas beefin wit this South vs NY shit. Im from BK and yo seriously that shit shouldnt go down, fuck man dont our asses learn from our mistakes…Pac, Big L, Biggie and now Proof. Niggas need to get their mind straight for real.

  286. aaaa Says:

Insert Rakim Allah at number 1 .. man. You know real niggas rep.

  287. DixieBoi Says:

Yall punk ass yankee bitches. WTF is tha matter with yall. God damn stuck up queer lamp pole humping, fake ass pizza eatin, piece of shit. Yall just mad cause all yall got aids and murder each other. I wouldnt mind a couple thousand of yall come down here so ya can get yalls ass whooped. Well fuck NY and everyone from it!!! BITCHES!!

  288. KLO Says:

  294. Bugsytheboss Says:

MTV don’t have no idea about hip hop anyway and of course they would put gay-z #1 becuzz biggie and 2pac is dead. I think they hated on 50 cent cuzz he is still kind of new to the rap scene (2002 first major LP)but you best to believe he deserves to be in the top ten sooner or later

  295. MaKeiba Says:

PLEASE STOP SUCKING OFF 50CENT!!!! I mean damn 50 puts out good music, but he hasn’t been out long enough to be considered. Beyond that, he reports to Eminem and Eminem reports to Dre in all reality. And as for me riding the South’s dick, I AM FROM THE DIRTY AND I DON’T HAVE TO RIDE MY OWN DICK THAT’S WHAT IGNORANT FUCKAS FROM THE NORTH ARE FOR!!

[I’m glad you said it. just watch out, you know when the Pac stans show up there’s gonna be drama. and Pac stans are nooo joke.]

    Hahaha, that’s the truth.

I put BI ahead of Pac.

  305. southern boi Says:

i lie the south music but i also like the ny music the same. hell maybe even more. there is a lot of rappers in the south that are really whack. some of the atl rappers like jeezy and d4l(possibly the worst rap group to ever be known) but the main state that is really giving hip hop a bad name is houston. almost every single rapper in houston cannot rap. the only one that im really cool with is paul wall ad mike jones. and mike jones isn’t even all that good. hes always saying his name lie a thousand times in his songs just so he can add a few bars on his lyrics. if the world had a drinking game for every time they heard mike jones, we’d all be dead right about now.

oh yeah, and thank you nBmore for finally putting canibus in your list. canibus is probaly one of the best lyricist to ever be known in my opinion.

  306. RyRo Says:

    Everybody listen up

Jay-Z is on the top of the list because he switches his flow in every song and still manages to do great. He’s My Favorite Rapper. My top 10 is as follows

    1. 2Pac – He’s put out more albums while being dead than any alive rapper

    2. Big – He was amazing in his first 2 I think he could have passed Pac had he put out more albums

    3. Jay-Z – 15 albums in 10 years, what can I say

    4. Nas – Illmatic was one of the greatest cd’s of all time Stillmatic had several good diss tracks but not quite the caliber of Superugy

    5. Eminem –

    6. KRS

    7. Rakim

    8. L L Cool

    9. Fabolous

    10. Talib Kweli – Not hard, but maybe the best lyricist of all time
