Jay-Z/Nas Interview Recap and Transcript

I just watched the Jay-Z/Nas interview and it was only a half an hour and all chopped up and peppered with old interview footage and video clips. It was still good to watch because it’s the first time you’re really seeing these two sit down and talk, but you’re better off reading the transcript for the bigger picture. There’s alot in there that was left out of the broadcast, plus it gives you an idea of how they edit this stuff for T.V. to play a certain way. Anyway…

It seemed like there was a little tension in the air when they were discussing the beef. Sway made it a point to bring up specific lines and ask how they each felt after hearing the other’s dis. They both played it relatively well, but you can kind of see what they mean when they say they’re not exactly friends just yet. Jay called Takeover a "figure 4 leg lock" and Nas replied "then I just lit a bomb".

Nas’s beef with 50 and Jay’s beef with Cam came up. They both basically dismissed Cam like he wasn’t even worth mentioning, much less responding to. Nas said he still has love for 50, but he kind of sonned him by saying he brought him up and used to bring him on tour with him, etc. They were asked if they would come to each other’s aid in the event of a beef, and they both said they didn’t think the other would need any help.

Sway made no attempt to hide his thirst for Jay to respond to Cam, to the point where Jay said to him: "If you want the record, just ask for it. Just say, ‘Jay, give me the record.’" Nas later tells Jay that he feels like he has to come out of retirement, and they both go on about how "artistic" they both are. All in all, a good interview, hopefully in the future they’ll release the footage of the whole thing, unedited.

  3. GET Says:

Boring ass Interview with both of them lying, them coming together is all about Money.

How is stating the fact that he brought the hottest Mixtape artsit, on tour with him sonning 50, they were friends that why he still has love for him.

And he admitted, he knows why 50 is mad at him, cause he stabbed 50 in the back like he does with everybody around.

Why is it everyone that gets around Nas, ends up hating him? Shit even Biggie didnt like him

  4. luis' little sibling Says:

bwahahahahahah i knew it, i just kneeeew it. you know you’re a legend when your name is mentioned by so called “hiphop’s finest”. like i said, 50 rules the game, nas and jay can’t help but to talk about him because they love him and see him like a model. no need for that subliminal shit, yall love dude, just ask 50 for a collabo we all know yall would die for it. which rapper rightnow wouldn’t?

  5. DES Says:

man a couple of you just turn everything into a 50 topic. there was like maybe a paragraph of that interview about his beef with nas, and that’s the first thing some of you mention.

the biggie comments funny though, that might be the two of em in that interview if big was still alive.

  9. tyronebiggums71 Says:

this interview was whats up, if watching this didnt get you excited for some hot music than stop claiming to be hip-hop fans. they said what i have been telling you people for weeks a) that the battle was just a battle and they never had any im a kill him in them it was done in competition and with mutual respect, they both admitted they said some things to cross the line but they can be big enough to move ( you little kids will one day grow up to realize life is important to waste on petty shit that really means nothing )

the best part was when they were talking about takeover and ether, they sounded just like me and my boys talking shit to each other who is the best at nba 2k6 or some shit. this shit was hilarious to me they really seemed naturally cool with each other they could even talk shit in friendly ways to each other

Sway: Jay, how did you feel when he came back with “Ether”?

Jay: Right away, I gained a whole level of respect [for Nas]. Not many people come back after [“Takeover”]. That was like a figure-four leg-lock — I mean, you can’t get out of that. You can’t escape that one. It was like, OK — that whole level of respect.

Nas: Then I just lit a bomb!

Sway: That’s good y’all can joke around about that now. Jay, is there anything Nas said that was hurtful to you?

THIS IS A GOOD LOOK FOR HIP-HOP

  10. plug industries Says:

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO FELT ZAPPED BY THIS INTERVIEW. I SAW MORE INFO ABOUT THE INTERVIEW ON THIS SITE. IT WAS A GIMMIC

  11. cbrizzle AKA img...unot Says:

Its nice to see two true pioneers of what we call hip hop today link up. of course there is alittle tension because a couple years ago these guys were beefin. jay….. WE WANT THE RECORD!!!!!!!!! just so these bum ass purple city fans can go crazy on nah right. I cant wait to hear two of the kings of new york on wax together.

  12. tyronebiggums71 Says:

^^^ isnt that what any interview is though? every interview is either for someone to get paid for something or to promote something

  13. tyronebiggums71 Says:

sorry again with the arrows. i was responding to plug industries

  14. TL Says:

Sway: Jay, I’m not going to lie: When “Takeover” came out, I was thinking, “How is Nas going to respond to this?” You summarized Nas’ career as one hot album every 10 years, and you went on to imply that the knowledge he kicks is garbage. But now you’re a CEO and you signed him as an artist. What is your opinion of him now?

Jay: Like I said, when the war is going on, all you trying to do is point out things that’s going to get the most of people. Like I said, it’s always been a level of respect there. I, for not one second, ever said I don’t believe that he’s one of the best lyricists ever. And that’s what it is, at the end of the day. We are not in wartime right now: We thinking with sensible minds, we’re thinking bigger than what was said on the record.

Sway: As bold as it is that you came together, you still got issues coming at you. Nas, you and 50 have been at war with words for the past however long, and the same now with [Jay] and Cam’ron — Cam recently put out a dis record against you.

Nas: I have never been in a word war with 50. 50 came up with me. I brought him on tours with me. I like him a lot. I got a lot of love for him. To tell you something real, I think he was hurt by me by certain things that he thought that I did were against him in certain ways. He didn’t understand the moves that I was making. He thought I was against him in certain ways, and he had a lot of love for me and looked up to me and respected me in so many ways for me bringing him on with me and giving him a lot of knowledge. I never had any words, and his thing is he’s going to say whatever is on his mind. And sometimes he don’t know when to stop, and I think he just got to get those things off his chest. And of course I say a little thing here and there, but at the end of the day I know it was hurtful.

Sway: [To Jay] You got an interesting dilemma, because now you wear a suit and you wear the hoodie, and you have a former artist [Cam’ron] getting at you. And the thing, to me, that got you to the position you are now is your credibility as an MC. But as you move as an MC, how does that affect your ability as a CEO?

Jay: I don’t think [“You Got to Love It,” Cam’ron’s dis record against Jay] could ever question my credibility as a MC. It’s not anything challenging enough or artistic enough. I think we all know what the record is. It’s too blatant — it’s not even well thought-out. So I don’t think it challenges anything. But why is this a question for us? Do I have beef with 50 now and does Nas have beef with Cam now? That’s the type of thinking that we are trying to get past. I know its going to take a minute. It’s a very valid question and I’m not minimizing your question in any way.

Nas: This here is a threat, bottom line. I think dudes need to learn from it, man. Be men

Sway: Jay, I know you’re itching for somebody to throw some verbal torpedoes at the two of you. If G-Unit makes a record dissing Nas, if Dipset makes a record dissing Jay — you’re not gonna respond?

Jay: We are grown men. Be strong. I don’t feel like he needs any help in any area. I don’t feel like I need any help in any area.

Sway: I don’t want to keep going back to the battle, but when it was going down, was there anything that made you go, “Oohhh, he hit me hard with that.”

Jay: Nah, ‘cuz I was in it. I wasn’t viewing from a statistical point of view. I felt like there was things that were over the line that made me say things that were over the line. So it was just stuff like that.

Sway: Nas, when you heard verses from “Takeover,” didn’t it make you go, “Damn, Jay ain’t playing — he’s serious.”

Nas: Yeah, I mean, the seriousness of the record alone. The way the track was going, the way it was put together. It was well thought-out and it wasn’t something I can say … In all honesty, at first I was like, whatever. But the streets wasn’t letting me go like that. So I had to really pay attention, and I realized it was really on.

Jay: Yeah, absolutely. We both are from a certain … there are unsaid things, where we grew up. And once you say certain things, you know, you cross the line. When you say something to another man like, you own mine, you know what you saying to that man.

Sway: You did say a lot of that, too. Everybody knew Jay had the gloves off in “Takeover,” if I can paraphrase what he says, “I did you-know-what with you-know-who, but we gonna leave that between me and you.” And it turned out that it was alluding to [Nas’] child’s mother. How did you feel about that?

Nas: I feel like that was tactful coming from him, how he lined that line up. Once you got a line like that, that’s like the famous 2Pac “How you gonna call yourself a playa?” even though I wasn’t married or nothing like that back then. That’s tactfulness and it was kind of like, how do you respond to that? Because no matter what you say, that’s a line — that’s a hard line. I was like, you supposed to go to the next level and maybe say things that were a little crazy. That’s just responding. In a war, just responding to words, you gonna pull out your heavy artillery. But that’s what that was then. My child’s involved, children are involved, so we left it at that.

Sway: So because of your child you don’t even speak on …

Nas: I mean, there was even a moment when Jay was on the radio and you know, Moms said, “Chill.” His mom, my mom — bless her — was listening and I was like, “Wow, my moms was listening.” And the fact that he said it on the radio [when] his mom was listening, that’s when I knew we both went too far.

  15. SexyWeeBastard Says:

Sway: Who’s “them”? Who was on the list?

Jay: We’ll give it to you after we leave!

You’re lookin at, “One smart black boy”! His momma ain’t raise no fool, fa sho! I can pretty much say that Jigga Man hasn’t recorded a diss 4 ?killa? Cam yet. Why hold onto it?
NaS isn’t at the position that Jay is in coz he smokes too much of dat shit. Dudes head is a Marley. (No Disrespect! Got metaphors 2 keep me outta da projects.) His head is all fucked up. Not to discredit his accomplishments, but he is not on the same level, mentally, as Jay-Z. I think it was interesting that not one person has mention son (NaS) disappearing for days on end. Then his ex-wife finding him in some run down apartment, with loose leaves (read: written rap pages) laying everywhere. What does that tell you? He’s smokin too much of dat ol shit. FUCK crafting or honing his skills. That’s fighting inner-demons and shit.
Bottom line, if NaS wasn’t such a ‘POT HEAD’, (to use a parlance of our times) he’d really be doing “Big Thangs”!
Sorry lil homey, I just tell it how I see it! Word.

So, is this union a ploy to make mo money?
    You betta believe it is.
    But, is it entertaining?
    Fuckin’ A right, ya cunt!
    :-D Peace

  16. Scorsese Says:

I think Sway let them off a little easy he could’ve asked some more pressing questions…. plus it seemed like he was more interested in talking to jay than nas….i dont think the interview was that great as it was hyped to be

  17. Laughin@yaniggas!!! Says:

OFF TOPIC QUESTION FOR YA’ll>>>> Now I know ya heard the “DEAR SUMMER” track by Jay-Z and “Summer WITH MIAMI” by Jim Jones…Ok I just started reading in to this shit.. Iight maybe im slow and yall been knew this but is there a Correlation/ Connection or subliminal message they are making to each other?

At one point in Jim jones song he says “If u think dat bitch summer is yours, she might be cheating on u?”

    right-

But in Jay-Z’s song he says “Dear Summer I know your gonna miss me”…”I think we need some time away” …and he says ” Its like when niggas make subliminal messages in records, if it aint directed directly at me I dont respect it”

( Im going with the notion that Jay’s song was put out after Jimmy’s)

Are they refering to the industry? or its just nothing?—

SAIGON (nearly killed last month) Sai says the ordeal has caused him to refocus on his music, namely his in-the-works album The Greatest Story Never Told. He said he should have been in the studio recording that night instead of spending idle time at the diner. The LP, which Just Blaze is producing, is 80 percent done and will probably be out sometime this year.
“probably be out sometime this year” means look for it 2007

  50. GET Says:

LOL at Nas dissing the whole label, when he said that he is equal to 20 artist at Def Jam, and then trying to cover it up with a bullshit explanation

  51. tyronebiggums71 Says:

^^^ he meant he was equivelent to 20 artist anywhere not just def jam artists

  52. cbrizzle AKA 80'S BABY Says:

  53. AllChemist Says:

Music has always been a powerful tool for us black folk, socially and politically. Hip hop is the crux of that, even in its sad state. It’s made multimillionares and middle-class citizens out of countless ghetto kids. Sometimes we are too wrapped up in the present to realize that theres been no other point in history where this has happened on such a large scale; poor folk have an accessible means to get rich and ‘the man’ can’t make it illegal. Even laffy taffy can get a piece, and we aint mad at em. the point I’m making is that it’s too important to be wasted lobbing silly bombs at each other ala G unit etc. Thats just childish and dumb, and I’m glad to see some people with the proper influence realizing that.

Think about it this way: Rappers are reaping the fruits now from seeds planted years back by more positive movements in the genre; imagine the rotten fruit we’ll be reaping years from now as a result of the beef/hate/drama/controversy rap used to sell(out) records today.

  54. Laughin@yaniggas!!! Says:

    ~ AllChemist~~~
I think maybe “we” are responsible? “We” referring to the consumers/fans! The only reason that these people acheive fame, get continous air play, and keep beef alive is the fact that people keep feeding into it and love the hate. If the ratings on these radio shows went down, we stopped downloading “beef” tapes, and stopped watching the crap thats on tv. Then im sure the industry might revert back to what THE PEOPLE WANT! They give Us what we ASK for and Im not excluding myself but the reality of the matter is that music is lost, and hip hop is lost! The constant Garbage that is out today will affect the next generation like AllChemist said but I guess we are to blame. Think of the little girls singing “My Neck, My Back” and the young boys talkin bout “Girl Shake that Laffy Taffy”. That’s what I was referring to, I mean, It might not bother us, cause we grown as hell but Im scared of the next generation of kids. They dont know how to throw it back like we can! Cus we can remember a time when hip hop was tough and tight! But all these young bucks know is this “Groupie love” and “SHOOT a nigga Die Slow” music! Its not all about that!
Some of the best CREATIVE songs have come from hip hop…stuff like
    If I ruled the world-Nas & Lauryn
All I need- Method & Mary
Bedtime Story-Slick Rick…so much more but yall know!!!!
When was the last time you heard a song that made u think, name one u could really feel? There is no feeling behind the songs that are on the radio right now. And even if there is IM SURE SOME DUMB ASS Rapper is gonna fuck it up with a REMIX. Basically, I wasnt trying to play out the South, Im just saying that these rappers are becoming so wack to the point that there are NO other options than to try and separate garbage from trash! Its all the same!-** — give me some music for the mind

  55. distinkt Says:

I don’ t watch many MTV interviews, but I watched this one last night, and it turned out to be pretty hot. Somethings were actually new news to me.

Funny to see how it seemed like, at times, both Nas and Jay wanted to still one-up each other on who won the battle. Like, when Sway was talking about how big “The Takeover” was, Nas didn’t really look happy, and when Nas said that he ended it with Ether, Jay wasn’t exactly smiling either.

Same thing happened when they were asked if a Nas and Jay album was forthcoming. Neither said much and they both had these funny expressions on they’re faces.

  56. How to Get the Girl of your Dreams Says:

Good interview…there obvously was some tension…..Nas did light a bomb…..

  57. e-dubbs Says:

I was shocked to see Nas out dress Jay-Z. What the hell was Jay doing? He had some of the ugliest sneakers I’ve ever seen and had the nerve to tuck his jeans into them. Good grief.

Can we please retire the BAPE clothing line. It sucked from day one and continues to suck. How can people feel good about a line that made itself off of taking AF1’s and replace the Swoosh with a Star? As if AF1’s arent garbage in the firstplace. (yes I said it, they are garbage. $70 pieces of shit that crease after one step. White AF1’s do not complete an outfit! Get something more creative)

  58. swisstopher Says:

they made me open my eyes on how grown mature men handle things. i’m glad to hear that they’re doing this.

  59. ProHipHop - Hip Hop Business News Says:

Quick Takes: Jay-Z/Nas, Hood Docs, Ecko’s Game Banned, Vegas Rap Ban, MySpace Mobile, Stop Snitchin’ Marketplace

This is all stuff I want to spend some time looking at but, damn, how the time does fly when you’re a one man shop. The hood doc/stop snitchin’ stuff will be looked at soon in more detail. Eskay considers

  60. TL Says:

    maybe Weezy
And outkast is straight garbage (i can tolerate the fat dude but the gay dude i just cant fuck with)

  61. thekid10705 Says:

E Dubbs , taking people to school…Word up!..That BAPE shit is corny and they way the white on white harlems’ (Air force 1’s , for those outside the NYC) been played out by everyone the last few years is just crazy…I like it when dudes rock their own shit…Nas has always been fly…To me, and maybe I’m biased but in my opinoin Jay never really had his own shit…Even when he’s all business it looks like he’s trying way to hard to be Puff..

  62. Thadopeja Says:

To go back to the Jim Jones/Jay-Z summer songs. I think Jim Jones “Summer in Miami” came out after “Dear Summer”, but, I think that he recorded “Summer in Miami” before Jay made “Dear Summer”. Timing is everything and I can see Jay getting a snek preview of a song before it hits the streets. I think that is possible, especially a song from the Dipset. I’m sure he can get one of those joints hot off the press. I can see him responding and his shit getting put out quicker than “Summer in Miami”. “Summer in Miami” is on the Jim Jones album, “Dear Summer” isn’t on an album. As much planning that goes into an album, I have a hard time believing Jim Jones made “Summer in Miami” after “Dear Summer” and then put it on his album. Of course, I could be wrong. Just a theory.

As far as the interview goes, I liked it. It’s good to see the best two alivelyricists since 94′ coming together for the cause of hip hop. Is it about money? Yeah, everything is about is about money. Need I remind you….”Cash Rules Everything Around Me—–Cream get the money–Dolla Dolla Bill y’all”(Peace to the Wu Tang- I miss you niggas). Can you blame them? Think about it, 50 Cent is about to leave a legacy of rap/hip hop that will change the game. I respect 50, but don’t like most of his music. Too gimmicky. Nas and Jay are a few of the last dinosaurs of a time when rap was all about the lyricists. I saw a Souls of Mischief video last night, “From 93 Until”, and wondered where are those niggas. The game has changed so much from the early 90’s. This is all we have left, or we won’t recognize the game in 5 years. I mean seriously, Nelly wouldn’t have made money in 95. Fat Joe wasn’t shit nationally in 95. 50 Cent probably would have been forgotten about in 95. We had Wu Tang, Redman, Snoop, Tha Dogg Pound, Common, Westside Connection, Spice 1, E-40, and Biggie and Pac to make shit pop. We don’t have that now. There is no authenticity in rap/hip hop anymore. All we have left is Jay-Z and Nas as far as icon type rappers/lyricists.

  63. eskay Says:

Dear Summer was on the Bleek album. Summer in Miami definitely came out after Dear Summer and it was 100% a shot at Jay.

  64. Thadopeja Says:

word, i didn’t know it was on bleek’s album, i copped it off the internet. why the animosity between dipset and jay? what’s their beef? is there more to it than the roc-a-fella split up?

  65. MaddenMaster Says:

The only thing I can cpmpare to this untiy is Biggie and Pac’s mothers on MTV lol now that was special….. but its great for the music…

  66. Sackeyfio Daniel Says:

It good jay and nas have proved to the rap industry that the dont have anything like pac and biggie in mind.
they have really acted as grown up, i hope others will learn from them

    Accra-Ghana

  67. Sackeyfio Daniel Says:

am happy these guys have acted in amature way, i hope the rest who have beef will solve it in a sensible manner

  68. Goldie Says:

I’ve read may of these replys on here and seen both the MTV and BET interviews and this is my spill. Coming from some one who didn’t become a Jay fan until “Blueprint” or a Nas fan until “It Was Written” BUT who also went back and bought every album before and after those and have thuslt been following their careers………I LOVE THIS SH*T! My dude for life will always be 2-Pac, that’s why it saddens me that he and Biggie didn’t get a chance to do the same thing as Hov and Gods Son. Yeah the interviews will no doubt generate cash flow for them both, but what else is the purpose of TV if not that and to inform/entertain us. You take from it what you want. This is going to be on eof the biggest moves in music history. I have always said that Jay-Z had the club bangers and head bobbers while NAS had the real thoought provoking poetic sh*t and that if Nas ever had Jay’s producing………..He would be out of this world. Now we’ll get a chance to see. I hope I hear more Timbaland, Just Blaze and Dr. Dre producing rather than Kanye though.

  69. larry Says:

Nas is hundred times better than Fif and his motherfuckin gay unit aint Pac said it on makavelly that Nas is the ring leader of east coast rappers.Fif is not even among the top hundreds. He’s a pussy and scared to come to hood.Fif is just eminem’s lil project and i can personally gun him down.

  70. 1mic Says:

What a great hip-hop move.. Now we in Africa are much proud to tell that our fellow American brothers think for us for a moment. In Africa we share (not the wife and girlfriend shit, but we share peace and knowledge). Talkin’ bout me, im was inspired by the late Tupac Shakur, but that didn’t mean that i dont have respect for Biggie. The same goes with Esco & Jigga, They are both good artist. I tell you what, any hip-hop fan out there who does not have Esco & Jigga in his top 5 listh he is fake. No King of N.Y coz that is Biggie. But the best two Kings of N.Y hip-hop basement alive… R.I.P 2pac, R.IP Biggie.
    HIPHOP 4 EVER
