Saigon vs. The Dirty South

Saigitty.jpg

Saigon’s tendency to unrepentantly speak his mind on all things hip hop has earned him the admiration of his fans, but his latest statements may ultimately end up hurting him in a market that will no doubt prove vital to an up and coming artist in 2006. In an interview with Cedric Muhammad, Saigon accuses Southern artists of "dumbing down hip hop" and refers to them as ‘slow’ attributing their current dominance of the charts to the ignorance of consumers. An editorial at WordofSouth.com posted recently tears into the Brooklyn M.C. and accuses him of being a hippocrate and participating in the same ‘dickriding’ he rants about in the interview, citing the fact that he just dropped a mixtape with one of the South’s most prominent DJ’s, Atlanta based Drama.

From Word of South:

Now none of this adds up. If you’re doing a mixtape with the hottest DJ out right now who resides in Atlanta, what do you call that? According to what Saigon has said that is what is called dickriding. Why would he straight up hate on south music just because he dropped 200 mixtapes and no one outside of east coast was paying attention to him? He has been sitting on Atlantic for about a year still dropping mixtapes while the south continues to be hot. I guess he got tired of doing the whole setup, punch line, simile track so he comes down south to be noticed. What makes Saigon more advanced then a southern artist?

The writer goes on to cite Saigon tracks that he argues are just as bad as the stuff Saigon is crusading against. I’ve always said Sai’s lips were a little too loose for his own good, but I assumed he was smart enough to limit his criticism to his peers and not attack potential fans, and indeed an entire region of the country. I like Saigon, but lately I’ve been getting the impression that people may be taking him a little too seriously for their, as well as his, own good. I’ll reserve my opinion on his statements and his hippocracy for another time, but it’s no secret how I feel about some of the Southern music that is currently flooding the airwaes. That said, I have to join Word of South in questioning the wisdom of forming an opinion on a whole region based on the trash put out by a few artists. It will be interesting to see if and how this will affect Saigon when it’s Soundscan time.

THAT’S GOTTA BE ONE DUMB ASS NIGGA. HE JUST KILLED HIMSELF WITH THAT COMMENT. HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE PERFECT UNCLE TOM DURING SLAVERY. NIGGAS WILL TELL YOU WHO THEY ARE IF YOU JUST LISTEN TO THEM. HE’S DEFINITELY A PUSSY NIGGA. DON’T CROSS THE MASON DIXON BECAUSE YOU MIGHT GET 2 ASSHOLES.

  2. Rizz Says:

its only gonna effect his soundscan and who needs soundscan anyways ive always liked the lyrics

“fuck sound scan im doin my own numbers”

i like music from the south, some of it,but i hope people are smart enough to understand what he meant

he was saying the whole south is like that cause snap is all thats coming out of there right now oh and “Georgia” and im sure he is reffering to lil jon too for spending a whole year adlibbing his way into white america

i cant hate on saigon for what he said man i think he is right you just have to understand what he means

  3. e-dubbs Says:

I think its safe to say no one expects Saigon to sell records anyway. Speaking for the advacement of your people in a manor that offends whites = no sales. (unless your Icecub or Public Enemy of the late 80’s) I think Saigon knows this but is gonna run with his beliefs regardless of the backlash.

    Rock on youngman.

  4. Demiks Says:

Truth is, Saigon is just saying what everyone wanted to say. I’m sure he doesn’t mean the whole south, because theres Goodie Mobb, Scarface, Z-Ro, OutKast (before Stankonia), 8Ball/MJG, etc. I wouldn’t say that kinda shit out loud though, cause I probably just don’t understand it. The south probably embraces songs “Laffy Taffy.”

  5. Demiks Says:

    songs like*

  6. Ill Will Says:

Everything Saigon says is true. The only thing is, he’s a fucking hypocrite, because he does the same shit. Thats what makes it so bad. Talking about rappers aren’t putting too much violence in their music, and then turning around and making a song about putting holes in niggas’ “Stocking Caps.”

But as far as word of south saying that his music is no more complex than the average southern rapper is ridiculous.

  7. Ill Will Says:

*talking about rappers ARE putting too much

  8. KingML Says:

Saigon makes ChinoXL look like 2pac.

  9. DEEZ NUTS Says:

LOL@ MLK. SAIGON SELLING UNITS IN THE SOUTH IS WORSE THAN MASTER P IN NEW YORK TRYING TO GET A BUZZ.

  10. JGhost Says:

ill will! Sai’ is talkin bout people who claim they put holes in niggaz stockin caps, but in life they never looked @ a gun or lived that life, he did so he has the right to rap about it.

  11. eskay Says:

    >>Sai’ is talkin bout people who claim they put holes in niggaz stockin caps

actually, I’m pretty sure he’s talking about himself in that song

  12. Tego Says:

As soon as I heard that Saigon was doing a DJ Drama tape I was like “That’s gonna be sick”. Then I thought “Everybody gotta do a dirty south track/ Come on we all got love for the south/ But we can show that love by simply shouting them out”.

I’m not surprised that the south’s turning on him. What kind of ignorance is that? The whole of the south makes party music? How are you gonna blame a region? What because New York can’t do it any more? The fuck?

I’ve been reading Saigon interviews with squinted eyes for a couple of years just waiting for some ignorant comment about “So-and-so’s girl” “So-and-so’s soundscan” or “So-and-so’s single”. His management should have gagged him early.

“I got like 3-4 albums in the streets”… Ummmm. No you aint. The dumbest, mixtape lovingest, Saigon groupiest person knows that you have no album to your name. Don’t throw mud at another man’s product when you’re scared to put yours out there.

I’m saying that as a fan.

  13. co sign Says:

Saigon or no saigon just shut up ans do your thing dont say your coast got better music than another coast go in the studio come out with a hot album and prove it if you can till then shut up and get to work and i’ll keep my ears open

  14. doc Says:

this is so stupid….people need to stop putting the south in one lumpsome….there’s D4L and there’s outkast….there’s room for different rappers to make music.

put he got diarrhea of the mouth…he just keeps going and going.

the south build a fanbase, and ny rappers dont…they just put out mixtapes and thats it….the south plays their unsigned artists…new york dont do that.

that is why D4L got so much play before they were signed…ATL liked them enough…they didnt care that they were signed…i wish NY would do that with their artists.

  15. DEEZ NUTS Says:

IM SICK OF THIS NIGGA CO-SIGN. SAIGON IS A WRAP. SAIGON IS LIKE THE “GUCCI MANE” OF THE NORTH. DEAD BEFORE HE EVEN STARTED.

  16. Htown Chick Says:

There are bumb ass songs that come out of every city, coast, side or wherever so why call out the only “the South”. I think he’s a dumb ass dude for saying that and I don’t think people down south can take that statement any other way. Then this guy has the nerve to drop a mixtape with Drama! I mean really, do you think we are going to get that shit after that dumb ass shit he just said. Hell no!! He put that out w/ Drama to reach the South to help his starving ass come up!!!!! Don’t quit your day job cause your rap career is over.

  17. DEEZ NUTS Says:

I HOPE SAIGON IS READING THIS POST SO HE CAN KNOW HE JUST FUCKED UP HIS SALES BEFORE HIS RECORD EVEN DROPPED. YOU GOT TO BE A GAY ASS NIGGA TO HATE ON SOME CRUNK SHIT. DO YOU SEE THE SHOW THEM GIRLS PUT ON WHEN THEY PLAY YIN YANG AND LIL JON???? PERSONALLY, I THINK SHAKE IT LIKE A SALTSHAKER IS THE #1 SONG OF ALL TIME. I CERTAINLY WOULDN’T WANNA SEE A CHICK SHAKING HER ASS TO SOME PAPOOSE.

  18. Demiks Says:

Anybody actually read everything Saigon said, not just what the website had put in bold?

He was saying the good south artists are in the background. The southern artists that are being pushed out aren’t Z-Ro and Goodie Mobb, its Jeezy and D4L. The only people to blame are consumers, because it wouldn’t be sold if it wasn’t selling.

“I feel like – not to dis the South, because my family is from the South and my mother is from the South…” -Saigon

It’s not like he did a mixtape with Drama for pity, he actually respects (and learns from) some southern artists.

“There are a few groups like David Banner and Outkast (that you can learn from). It’s a few of them.” -Saigon

I think people blew that shit out of proportion. The original interview is from July 22, ’05. No reason to get defensive. By bolding certain words, people are just going to read JUST the bolded letters and think thats the main message. Thats how propaganda starts.

  19. DEEZ NUTS Says:

I DONT GIVE A FUCK. FAGON KNEW HE SAID SOME SIDEWAYS SHIT. HOW DO YOU THINK WE USED TO FEEL WHEN WU-TANG AND THE REST OF N.Y. WAS ON TOP AND THEM PUSSY ASS NIGGAS WAS BLATANTLY DISSIN DOWN SOUTH NIGGAS? FIRST WE WAS JUST SOME COUNTRY ASS NIGGAS IN PLAIN WHITE TEES. STOP HATING ON YOUR OWN KIND.

  20. eskay Says:

Demiks, The point of my post was to point out Saigon’s hippocracy and his tendency to speak before thinking. I’m not from the South, so I could really care less. He could’ve been talking about the West Coast, it really doesn’t matter. That said, regardless of whether he gave props to ‘Kast and Banner, these words still came out of his mouth:

They were always considered slower than us. The Down South mo’ f—–s was always considered slow. Like up here in New York, we were always considered more advanced than Down South people. Now it is like the tail wagging the dog. Now, it is like the slow people are leading the advanced. The slow mo’ f—–rs is like in control of shit because the majority rules. And there is more slow people, so now that is what is in effect.

It’s kind of hard to argue that those comments are out of context. The thing is, he is right, that is the perception, but coming out and saying it is another thing.

  21. DEEZ NUTS Says:

WILLIE LYNCH WOULD HAVE LOVED THAT COMMENT. IF HE KEEPS TALKING LIKE THAT HE’LL LEARN TO SHUT HIS DICK SUCKERS.

  22. Stl Man Says:

Whats Saigon got going right now? Just as I figured. Nothing.

  23. DEEZ NUTS Says:

THIS NIGGA CAN’T EVEN GET NO PUSSY IN THE SOUTH. THEY MIGHT SET HIM UP OR ROB HIM BY THEIR DAMN SELF. HOW CAN YOU HATE ON WOMEN? THIS NIGGA CAN’T BE A PLAYER. HE LOOKS LIKE A FAT FUCK.

  24. DEEZ NUTS Says:

DON’T LET A NIGGA PUNCH HIM IN THOSE BIG COOCHIE LIPS. THEY’LL LOOK LIKE AN ASS ONCE THEY SWELL UP.

FACE, OUTKAST, LUDA, T.I., YOUNG BUCK, YOUNG GEEZY will go down in Hip Hop history. That niggah Saigon couldnt be talking about them7 cats, thats the only real hip hop we have in the south. If his shit is bangin, hell I might cop a BOOTLEG copy from Greenbrier Mall.

  27. Ibebofa Says:

Finally, a rapper says shit that is true. There are tight groups and rappers in the South but when you reppin wack shit that is just bouncy and calls for no lyrical ability, you just a straight follower. Word up gitty

  28. Miami Boi Says:

East Coast Hip-Hop cannot be danced to properly by girls. The shit is not meant for that. Now, I don’t hate East Coast Hip-Hop… But shit, every website you go on, East Coast cats will let your ass know that the East Coast is all about lyricism and that is why their music is better than yours (now of course as I always say, they purposely forget Outkast, Eightball and MJG, TI, UGK, Young Buck, David Banner, Project Pat, Scarface, Ludacris, Little Brother, and all underground spoken word Southern artists they’ve never heard of when they say that, but I digress…)

Still, the East Coast cats do have a point somewhere in their bullshit. Their “lyrical” music is only to be listened to, not danced to because native African-American Up Top producers don’t have the soul to know how to make masses of black people outside of native African-American New York dance (and I exclude those with a reggae influence because The South and The Caribbean have a lot in common when it comes to making people dance).

  29. Miami Boi Says:

South Runnin This shit get used to it.

  30. Big Solo Says:

I’m not surprised at Saigon’s comments. The Rza from Wu Tang had said the same thing back in the 90’s. New York has always held this superior attitude to others concerning HipHop and I really dont know why. None of these East Coast artists are following thier own trends. All I hear is muthafuccas imitating N.W.A including Saigon. New York is full of dick riders and copycats. And to Saigon before you speak on others check your own rhyme heroes for emulating L.A street gangs. Nas went from HipHop to CripHop, Rza dont know if he a muslim or Blood, The LOX,Camron and the bitchset claim they Bloods. Real Compton city G’s chase copycats with gats.

  31. FliestGuyNTown Says:

FO REAL, NY STOP HATING CAUSE THE SOUTH CAN TAKE THEIR TIME AND HAVE A GOOD TIME, WHILE YALL STRESSIN WE “SLOW” WE JUST TAKE OUR TIME TO GET OUR MINDS RIGHT AND MOVE ON, WHILE YALL STILL TRYIN TO THINK OF AWAY TO GET BACK IN THE GAME BUT CAN’T CAUSE YALL OWN ARTIST IS SNATCHING THE RUG FROM UNDER ALL THE HOPE YALL GOT

Man the South has already taken over and it’s not gonna stop. When you speak of the South, you not just talking about the ATL, you talkin about AL, LA, FL, TN, NC, TX. How can New York ( 1 place ) compete with all those different diverse forms of hip hop? All those mc’s had their time to shine up cheah but now the time is now. The South is the new mecca ya heard; and we takin all yall women cause we tha hottest shit on earth right now fa sho.

  38. N.O. BlackBoy Says:

I agree with the man about the wack azz music that’s coming out. And that what pisses me off….why do they keep signing these wack ass niggas. But my problem with his comments is that u can’t stereotype the whole coast. There are real fans of “Hip-Hop” down here, just like any where else. And there are niggas down here that can really spit(including myself). I would burn the fuck out whoever, I don’t care where u from. The companies don’t sign those niggas that can spit. It’s like they look for wack niggas from the south. These past couple of month I’ve been hearing a lot of complaining from east coast artist about the south. Ya’ll cries are getting louder and that’s a bad thing. It’s gonna look like hating! Real niggas do them! If every body make their own shit and do them no one would be complaining. I love east coast rap, but since Jigga been gone you all seem lost. Do ya’ll. Check my page to hear a south side lyrical assazzinz. Long live Hip-Hop!!!!

  43. eskay Says:

  44. lavish Says:

To the earlier statements saigon dropd tons of mixtapes and isnt blowin up because he is showing his many personas instead of being steady. one song he’ll praise his mother the other someones getting their brains blown out. hes lived that life and hes changed but he can acctually rap about it cause hes lived it. I dont think hes hating on the south its rather those who represent poorly for hip hop that come from the south. Also hes made a good point that many rappers coming out nowadays will make a dance song just cause thats was going down. dont get his sales twisted. hes eating he makes far more % per sale compared to other artists. Saigon is a refreshing taste in the hip hop game. he hates the souths weak rappers ( clearly not all of them ) he doesnt like white people he doesnt like gays. he is a strong character

  45. J_DuBB Says:

Ey yo that mutha fucca Saigon is filthy but he shouldn’t be hatin on tha South cuz them catz in tha rap game now is hella dope but some rapperz like Gucci Mane and Goodie Mobb are FUCCIN WEAK AZ HELL

saigon can flow. personally i think he try to be too much like cannibus. the south has different personalities. you got t.i, pat, ugk and others like them that spit gangsta. you got niggas like d4l,franchise boyz that make dance music. and its clean tho. in the eastcoast you got 1 flava. only 1. everyone trying to do the same thing. aint no difference between saigon, cannibus, papoose, 50cent, all them niggas. niggas like busta, jay z? those niggas are origionally and got they own flava. i respect east coast niggas like that. bitches like saigon need to shut they mouth. before some real southern niggas shut it for them.

“too many niggas aint what they say that are”
