M-1 Interview

 m1_1.jpg

There’s an interesting interview with M-1 of Dead Prez over at HipHopDx. Some highlights:

Look at Puffy and The Lox. I was listening to Hot 97, and the guys were arguing about their contract. They’ve been away from Puffy for 11 years but he owns their publishing, they can’t even do an album – they’re retiring as The Lox.  My point being, this guy Puffy sits back, and he’s created the most oppressive kind of contract in the world, where grown men can’t even do their own work and have a career. He has his foot on the neck of these artists, who a lot of people admire, but have no idea how exploitive this man is being over them…even his man Biggie Smalls, he owns his publishing too. What kind of person is this – and why do we love him? Do I want a friend who would do me like that? No. I don’t want anyone like that around me. But we revere Puffy for his business and his tenacity. That’s bullshit. It’s bullshit where he’s going, and what he’s done, and I don’t applaud it. True that those guys did sign a contract, and knew what they were signing. But those laws, of nature and the world, are not equal. Just ‘cause that contract said it’s fair, don’t mean it is. This is not fair – I don’t care if their names are on this line…he’s the bottom of the barrel, yet people love him and everybody wants to be that. I think that should be a lesson of what not to be.

————————————————————————————–

Our music is a reflection of our political maturity, no matter what you say. I don’t give a fuck if it’s “Laffy Taffy” or “Diamonds from Sierra Leone,” it’s still a reflection of what we are thinking, who we are and what we’re gonna practice. I’ll take that home to my daughter and raise her correctly – that’s not a problem. The problem is the exploitation in the music. When we aren’t able to dictate what we really wanna hear and what we don’t want to hear. We’re bombarded with it through these propaganda and promotional mechanisms on TV and radio, and we really start to not think for ourselves. And there in you have the problem with the state of hip hop music. Some people would do anything to get into that position, and I think that level of prostitution is criminal.

 ——————————————————————————————

…Kind of like what 50 Cent said in GQ magazine about his admiration for George Bush, who I know is a terrorist and a criminal. With that being said, I like 50 Cent, but I think that was the stupidest thing he ever said in his entire life. Most people don’t understand that we’re under the gun and we don’t want to be that way. Now, what we’re willing to do and what statements we’re willing to make, is different.

M1 and Sticc.man are the best duo in the game, bar none. He might offend the white listener but the truth isnt suppose to be easy to digest.

  2. Fresh Says:

I don’t give a fuck if it’s “Laffy Taffy” or “Diamonds from Sierra Leone…”

    Amen.

  3. Ki Says:

Nigga please stop taking shit so serious, you got one life to live, and live it to the fullest. Stop worrying about what other do, and do you. I hate people that think their smarter then everyone, and their thinking is so complex that they feel they have uncovered something that no one else knows.

  4. Bird Says:

Ki you got to be like 12. Do you mean to tell me you don’t have serious thoughts? Ever? This is a grown ass man being real. Would your prefer he talk about busting a cap in a nigga? Is that living life to the fullest? What the hell is you talkin about? It kills me how far we have fallen that a man can’t express serious thoughts about the state of our community. Damn.

And later for Diddy. I been calling that dude the Don King of the music industry.

  5. yeahisaidit Says:

…i love dead prez and all but don’t hate the playa, hate the game…what Puffy and the LOX when through is the way unfortunately the music biz is set up…this is the standard relationship between labels and artists…artists commonly get the short end of the stick…labels are out for PROFIT, PROFIT and more PROFIT to remain solvent and use their artists to that extent…look what Prince when through with Warner bros…you might be from the street but the minute you become a label head you become the man…and then it’s all about business…fans assume artists are in total control of their careers, but they are naive it’s not like that by a longshot…that’s why if an artist wants control he sets up an independent label situation…so let’s not get it all twisted on puff and the LOX…much love and luck to both parties as they continue to grind…quit hatin’ tho’…

  6. Ki Says:

Bird -I would prefer him talk about, what he’s personally going to do to better the world, instead of talking all this bullshit you call real talk. Just cause he sound serious does not make him right. Exposing people like he was trying to do in that interview, doesnt change anything that he wants changed. So if he doesnt have the big master plan, to change the world he needs to shout the fuck up. Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X had their plans to succeed there dreams and goals, Fuck it even Bush had a plan on how to become president and start a War. So what Im saying is, tell this nigga finds his plan to change the world he needs to shout up.

  7. AGeezee Says:

YeahI – I disagree… People sometimes get so excited to be “on” that they don’t “think” about what they’re signing. To sign away your publishing is something that artists have done thinking that it’s just part of the game, when they really don’t have to. They just weren’t/aren’t aware of the fact that they don’t have to, Kathy Baylor, former A&R of Universal spoke on that.

I don’t think he’s hating, he was actually very humble in what he was saying, he was speaking on his disliking of their ACTIONS, not them as persons. In my opinion, that’s not hating. “If I don’t like it, I don’t like it, that don’t mean that I’m hatin…” – Common

  8. B Says:

Ki…read the premise of the article b4 typing…
    Check what he’s been doing….
“In addition to making music with a message, member M-1 is also a spokesperson for his “The Grassroots Artist Movement” organization. They work to not only bring awareness of the industry, but also have been providing free health care for artists for the past eight months”

  9. G Off Says:

I wonder how many kids tried the credit card scam they were rapping about a couple of years ago?

  10. babyGirlCA Says:

i think this guy was high when he wrote this shit.. he MUST be smoking something! Puff’s not JUST a business man, he’a a BUSINESS man! Contracts ARE by nature opressive… I don’t get to take my work home when I leave.. I just get to go home.. fuck.. so is Michael Jackson “opressing” the beatles because he owns their publishing? sure! that’s the BUSINESS! he doesn’t answer to anyone he even gave up a friendship for those rights and I’m sure he thanks sweet jesus everyday that he did it, otherwise he’d be as broke as this fool!

  11. what? Says:

Man I hate fools like you! M1 is talking the real talk. You just want that jiggaboo, chitlin talk. Rappers who say anything that even has a semblance of intellect contained within it get hated on to the Nth degree. Maybe it is a touch idealistic of M1 to carry the sentiments that he does but I know who I would take my chances with if it was a straight choice between him and Puff. Puff is straight gangster. As in paper gangster. Take your choice between him and Preme. At least street dudes will shoot you in the face! Puff is death by a thousand paper cuts…As far as that contract ish? Listen you dumb-ass there is such a thing as unequal power relations in a contract scenario. You know, kind of like big guy v little guy? The reason so many people got offended with the Lox scenario is because it is a clear an illustration of exploitation. And lets face it black people have had more than their fair share. We built this city… And that one. And that one…We expect a little more from our icons (yeah I know its sad. Puffy is an icon). Puff is up there with Kerry trying to save the children blah, blah, blah. Dude is always trying to represent. You trying to tell me that this dude needs to literally rape his artists to survive? Dude has had problems with virtually every artist he has had under his roster. Funny I do not remember any of Jay/Damons artists getting straight jacked for their publishing? Jay is worth like 250 mill? The parallel with Jacko is a non-starter. He bought the rights to the Beatles publishing by outbidding everyone else. Puff strong armed a bunch of yonkers new-jacks into a straight corn-ball deal. There is a difference. You fools that place such virtue on the joys of being paid at any cost are no better than the local crack-man on the corner trying to destroy the future. You think its all hard and shit to be a straight up thief. White collar crime costs the economy and society far more than straight up jack-moves. We all suffer on a moral and economic level. I could go into detail but this is a blog not an economics and morality seminar…Fools like this silly wannabe-apprentice-female trump-brain of a baby-girl need to get their minds right or get tha fuck out of sight.

  12. e-dubbs Says:

Its a catch 22. When your an artist, the label is suppose to make a majority of the money. Thats how the business works. On the other hand, you can be a humanist and say artist should see a majority of the profit because its their work that earned the profit. Reality is, it doesnt work that way. Not that its right, but the people with the money make most of the money.

As for someone comparing Puff to Don King, dont let people trick you. Don King has done more to help boxers than hurt them anyday. Does DOn King take a huge chunk of the fighters purse? Hell yes. But would they have a purse that big in the first place without him? Hell no. So I rather make 30% of 30 million that 80% of 3 million. Let’s not forget that Don King was the first promoter to ever have a million dollar purse, and he did this in an era where a black promoter was unheard of. So don’t let the media trick you about Don King. He’s no saint but he does more good than bad.

  13. posta child Says:

If puff would have been some white cat and the Lox was on radio w/ that muthafuckas you could have sold tickets on the Malcolm X bandwagon. Intelligently calling attention to a problem is not hating. It is clear that there are to different mindsets in this arena. People who use their minds to think. Then there are those who can’t see past 57 inch rims in a video crying like babies that the people they pay (cds, clothes, ect.) to sweat these people
    talking about sales.

This man is a legal pimp. Nothing more.

It is not the nature of a contract to be oppresive. It is an agreement. Their only problem was wanting to get moves made. It would not hurt him to treat people like he had if he had some morals. People who shamelessly praise people like 50 cents non-grandparent raising ass as they sit in they same house when he didn’t have sh!t give hella sh!t 2 my boys ass and puffy says alot about those who admire them. This is why these people can come out with non-sense like Laffy Taffy and have it on the radio and instantly have people setting up camp on the jocks of these souled out muthafuckas. Chuck D, in an interview, said (in short) that what is so bad is that black people have embraced these negatives. Rallied behind these new “modern sambo” images and stereotypes. Becoming what has been fought against.

  14. posta child Says:

For the record profit is understandable. You have costs, overhead, and services and the like. Your morals are questionable when you try and justify such gross exploitation. There is no reason that business would need to be handled is such a manner. No reason. As it has been said, Jay, Dame, and I will say Russell, do not get this from everybody they have on their rosters.

  15. CBRIZZLE Says:

M1 SOUNDS LIKE A BROKE RAPPER. O YEA HE IS. THIS RAP SHIT IS A BUSINESS. ITS LIKE GETTING MAD AT UR BOSS BECAUSE HE MAKES MAD MONEY OFF THE WORK U DO IN UR $12/ HR JOB. ITS A FUCKING CONTRACT PEOPLE, U HAVE TO MEET THE TERMS. DAAHHHH READ THE CONTRACT BEFORE U SIGN IT TOO. I DONT THINK U WOULD COME WORK FOR ME IF I HAD U SIGN A CONTRACT FOR U TO GIVE ME $4/ HR ON UR $12 / HR JOB. I DONT GIVE A FUCK HOW SMALL THE PRINT IS I AM READING EVERYTHING. THEN I WOULD GET SOME LEGAL ADVICE. DAME, JAY, RUSSEL, ARE DOING THE SAME SHIT. Y IS IT THAT AINT NOBODY GOT LONG DOUGH, BUT THE BIG DOGS.
WHY HASN’T ANYONE BROUGHT UP PEOPLE LIKE TONI BRAXTON, MARY J, EVERY RAPPER FROM THE 80’S, LL COOL J, TUPAC, EVERY DUDE THAT SAID U STOLE MY BEAT, EVERYDUDE THAT SAID I WROTE THAT. THEY ALL GOT RAPED. WHAT PEOPLE FORGET THAT IT IS BUSINESS. U MUST DOT UR I’S AND CROSS YOUR T’S. ARE U MAD AT STEINBRENER FOR MAKING BILLIONS OFF THE PLAYERS HE PAYS WHAT TO HIM IS SHORT CHANGE.

  16. posta child Says:

CBRIZZLE do your homework. To put it properly you get a job. Your boss never gives you proper raises. Even as you prove yourself worthy of such. Then when you are no longer under the employ of that boss that boss has been able to garnish your checks. The unjustifiable excuses for people have to stop. I wonder what makes people slaves for people of so little content.

  17. CBRIZZLE Says:

POSTACHILD, I EARN MY LIVING, I AM IN RETAIL. SO THE MORE I EARN THE MORE I MAKE. WHERE YOU GO WRONG IS BY ASSUMING. I GET BONUSES, RAISES THE WHOLE NINE. BUT MY BOSS STILL MAKES MAJOR CHEDDER OFF WHAT I DO. BELIEVE IT OR NOT WE R ALL SLAVES OF SOCIETY. IF U DONT BELIEVE THAT STOP PAYING TAXES, OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS. SEE I OWNED BUSINESS IN MY PAST AND I MADE PROFIT OFF MY EMPLOYEES.THATS BUSINESS. U THINK THAT A PERSON IS GOING TO PUT UP ALL THE OPERATING EXPENSES AND GIVE HIS CAPITOL AWAY. I DONT SEE THE EMPLOYEES AT TRUMP PLAZA CASINO TALKING ABOUT THEY WANT THERE CUT FROM THE CRAP TABLE FOR THE NIGHT.

  18. CBRIZZLE Says:

BUT I DO UNDERSTAND WHAT U R SAYINGG POSTA, BUT UNDERSTAND IF U GET A CONTRACT UNDERSTAND IT READ IT THEN COMPLETE THE TERMS. THE LOX ENSLAVED THEMSELVES

  19. Crack Babies Says:

    Dave
