And The Most Overrated Album of 05 was…

Thug_Motivation_101.jpg

…Young Jeezy – Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101! Yeeaaah! Thaaat’s right! Somebody had to stand up and say it. I’m sorry folks but ad libs do not a classic album make. I know the tsunami of hate I’m gonna get for this one will be overwhelming, but I couldn’t stay quiet any longer. Please understand though, that I actually kinda like Jeezy. I’m not gonna front like Let’s Get It didn’t get any play in my car this summer. But people, let’s relax with the ‘classic’ talk and the ‘Album of the Year proclamations. Jeezy is a great entertainer and a world class ad libber(?!) but a top tier lyricist he ain’t.

Exhibit A:

And that ain’t this and this ain’t that
And bitch I’m strapped
Fuck wit real niggaz that’ll cut ya throat
And they don’t drink Pepsi they just sell Coke

Exhibit B:

Once upon a time, I used to grind all night (grind all night)
With that residue, that was Ipod white (yeeeeeah)
I’m a boss, I got Juice like the magazine (jeah)
And everyday I see Feds like a magazine (ha ha)

Mind you, Standing Ovation is one of my favorite joints on the album, but  "Infatuation with the birds, I watch Animal Planet" is not a hot line guys, I’m sorry. The thing about Jeezy is his delivery. He spits every line like he’s saying some epic shit, when in actuality he’s really not.  I say the same thing about his little buddy Juelz Santana, a decent flow, aight lyrics, and a killer delivery is what makes these guys hot. I’m not mad at either of them, but come on, let’s show some love to the real hottest albums of ’05.

*BonusDMX calling him Young Cheesy on BET.

  1. dCs Says:

definitely a good album, but definitely NOT album of the year. people who say that only listen to mainstream rap. cause out of the mainstream, yeah, he is one of the better ones of the year.

  2. Ves Says:

Overrated, yeah– these 05 rappers are ODin’ with the ad libs. it’s getting outta hand.

  3. T Nelson Says:

Im glad somebody agrees with me i mean how is it a classic when the hottest verse associated with the album aint yours

  4. T Nelson Says:

im starting to like X all over again… the main reason i dont like Jeezy is everything he does seems so forced like he rehearses the way he talks and acts his character just doesnt seem authentic…. some people u can just see through

  5. runnerman Says:

I’m sorry folks but ad libs do not a classic album make.

    what?

  6. Angel La Says:

I ain’t gonna lie, I was blasting that album when I first got it. But you’re right, his lyrics aren’t that tight. It’s all about delivery.. Plus he look like a Ninja Turtle..

  7. G Off Says:

Of course he isn’t the best rapper, not even close. But, he does entertain the listener and has a great ear for beats (anyone else notice the East Coast beats worked for a Southern artist just like Lil’ Wayne?). I kept wanting to hate on the album, but it keeps getting burn in the ride. I’m really curious to see where he goes from here. It’s almost like he accidentally made a good album and is like “Shit, what do I do now? I still can’t rap…”

Good call on the delivery. East Coast lyricists that are mad about not getting the love they deserve need to understand that rap is still entertainment and when a rapper spits a line in an interesting way, the average listener will catch it and like it.

  8. Ill Will Says:

East Coast beats? On Trap or Die? Not at all.

  9. eskay Says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t really classify any of those beats as East Coast except maybe Soul Survivor. I am also very curious to see where he goes from here though…

  10. Demiks Says:

Doesn’t Freeway adlib exactly like Young Jeezy? Or did Young Jeezy bite him? “Yeeeeaaaah”

  11. e-dubbs Says:

I gotta call you on this though.. Not the album being overrated because to be honest, I never even listened to his album. But lyrically he is nothing more than a down south Styles P. I was thinking this to myself the other day after being forced to listen to a Jeezy verse by female friend. After reading some of your qouted verses, it only confirmed it. So explain to me how you can be a self-proclaimed Styles advocate but bash Jeezy, they both do the same damn thing, except one has mainstream success.

  12. eskay Says:

Oh get a grip dubbs. I know you hate SP but how could you ever compare him to Jeezy lyrically?

Couldn’t live the life I live (yo why’s that)
I could die any minute, I get high every minute
Fuckin with snake niggas, and sleepin with foul bitches
Came through in the latest whip with two pounds in it
Pull over where the hustlers be (and why’s that)
Cause I get chills when you talk of hustlin ki’s
So I’m always where the powder be at (what it mean)
I can blow five bricks to ten in an hour if that
Stay away from where the cowards be at (why’s that)
Time is money god, and you can’t get an hour back
Or I would do it again to get the power back
Have Godfather status, make niggas bow to that
You could all shine and glitter and keep the ones
Fives and tens, for twenties and up, we dummy it up
Make a lot of money, look bummy and what
Cause money aint shit, respect is everything
So if I kill niggas dead, don’t ask me shit
I smoke blunts to the head, so don’t pass me shit
I’d rather die from a bullet, than a nasty bitch
They say the good die young, all that mean to me
is that the hood die young, we call it the last days
What you know about coppin a house to fight pits in
Or blowin weed smoke on the cops that write tickets
Henny it up, shit we can semi it up
Have a picture of you on the wall, ‘In Memory Of’
Stay in sync with the hood, gray minks with the hood
We tryin’ to get money like chinks in the hood
They ask me how I’m doing now – I tell ’em better than them
And if your man front – he can get eleven in him
And if you told them once – then you better tell him again
    Ay yo, now let’s see
Who you know fuckin with Sheek Luc, Jadakiss, and S.P.

  13. eskay Says:

^ Jeezy will never in his life spit like that

  14. Swisstopher Says:

the funny thing about Jeezy is that he knows he can’t rap, but every song he puts out sounds hot, and that’s what people really look for nowadays. It’s not really about talent anymore, it’s all about who can make a hot song.

  15. Fresh Says:

I told one of my dudes if I was still in high school I would write ‘I see ya lookin, with ya lookin ass’ inside of their yearbook.

We are mos def on the same page.

  16. eskay Says:

Damn the AP called him ‘Little’ Jeezy

  17. J F Says:

i dont know if i can agree with u on this one again. lets just say… almost all of the most antipated albums this year were kind of overrated. even kanye wests one.

  18. Tego Says:

Come on man. The album’s sickness. Not reliant on big name production, but still very solid. Song after song (rather then track after track). No catering, it’s ver unforced. Very well put together. Very poignant, it’s very conceptual, it’s very complete.

I’m still playing it… Saying that. Kanye’s was album of the year by a long way to me. And you seem to have little care for it.

  19. doc Says:

nah he aint got the lyrics…just the hustle…the right twang….and all of that.

i didnt cop it….im tired of the song he got with akon. hot97 playin it 2 much.

  20. CASH CHECK OR CREDIT Says:

    JEEZY IS REAL TALK!

STOP HATING! STOP SNITCHING! B.M.F. 4 LIFE!

  21. AGeezee Says:

Young Cheezy is just a great entertainer. He’s giving the market what they want… Gangsta ish. Can’t knock his hustle. Like Dre said, “it’s all entertainment”, on the Show soundtrack back in the day. When Cheezy first came out, I thought he was sweet, but me and my partnerz was gettin drunk freestylin couple months back, and even if a nigga can’t flow, if you got yo’ boys, saying “yeeeeah”, and “thatsssss riiiiiight” in the background you can make just about ANYTHING sound sweet. Try it! :-)

  22. DEEZ NUTS Says:

ITS SICKENING THINKING ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF HATERS THERE ARE. MIKE JONES GOING PLATINUM IS WHO YOU SHOULD BE UPSET ABOUT OR HOW ABOUT NELLY GOING DIAMOND? JEEZY ISN’T THAT BAD YALL.

NOW THAT DMX SAID YOUNG CHEESY, ALL YOU NIGGAS ARE READY TO HOP ON HIS DICK. I DON’T SEE X COMING OUT WITH ANYTHING BUT JAIL TIME. AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED, X USED TO BE HOT.

  23. G Off Says:

Will- I never said Trap or Die had East Coast beats. We are talking about his album.

The reason this album started to grow legs was when there was the rumored Jay verse and people heard the “Go Crazy” beat (one that sounds like a Jay beat- definitely East Coast) and the anticipation grew for people who weren’t really familiar with Jeezy yet.

Is the use of some East Coast beats not one of the things that separates Trap Music from Crunk and other Southern sub-genres?

  24. AGeezee Says:

Actually I said Young Cheesy before I noticed that DMX said that, believe it or not. Trust me, it don’t take alot of creativity to come up with that one.

  25. AGeezee Says:

He got basic rhymes, with great ab libs and confidence. That’s it. That’s not hatin’, that’s stating the fax homie.

  26. DEEZ NUTS Says:

    SMD

  27. P-Matik Says:

Man, I thought I was the only one that thought Jeezy was mediocre. I was beginning to think I was buggin out.

  28. eskay Says:

I love the Jeezy Stans that come in here mad even though I still propped him in the post. it’s not that serious ya’ll…

  29. e dubbs Says:

S, you can search all you want for average verses by Dave but fact is.. “Fresh white tee, fresh car wash” is right out of the Jeezy factory. And they style is so similar to me, they really remind me of each other. Jeezy things he’s the biggest drug dealer to ever get a record deal, Styles thinks he’s the hardest dude to ever get a record deal. Both couldnt be further from the truth.. checkmate.

  30. eskay Says:

I’ll give you the white tee line, but Styles > Jeezy all day.

  31. posta child Says:

Swisstopher ‘hot’ now means to come out acting like what you spit is fire. Then people who don’t know, or care to know, better can be entertained by acts that have “street cred”. Please. When you been on the block and some one is like. “But does he have street cred”. Suburban lingo for block use. Just like “gansta rap”. Ice T said years ago that was the title for what he did. These are the types that vacuum this mess up blindly, and those like them. It would the sh!t when black muthafucka doesn’t have to “act black” to “blow up”.
