D-Block on Hot97

d-block_logo.jpg

D Block was just up at Hot 97 talking to Angie Martinez about their situation and airing out some bad blood between them and Diddy. The whole argument revolves around the 50% of The LOX publishing rights that Puff still owns from their Bad Boy days. Diddy must have been listening, because he called in and lets just say some voices were raised and tempers lost.

Here’s my take on this whole situation. Were the LOX stupid for signing the contract 10 years ago? Of course. That was one of the worst deals that has ever gone down in the history of entertainment. This dude still gets paid to this day from anything they do that does well and that’s how it will be until they get out of the contract. Forever.

On the other hand, Puff is a shady motherfucker and I don’t think anybody can deny it. It comes out during the interview that he still owns Big’s publishing. Styles goes down the long list of artists that have had problems at Bad Boy: 112, Faith, Lil Kim, Junior Mafia, Mase, Black Rob. Shit, Big is dead. One dude did leave Bad Boy with all his publishing though: Shyne. But look where he ended up anyway. Messing with Puff.

So yeah bad decisons were made, but damn Diddy, why not spread some of the love? I mean how much are you earning off the Money, Power, Respect album in ’05? Let Jason, David, and Sean eat too doggie!

What else would you expect from young cats in the game back in the mid ’90’s? These are 1 out of 1000000 NY rappers trying to get a break. Then, Puff Daddy comes along and offers you a way out. You’re not going to give a fuck about publishing, because all you care about is him getting your ass out the hood, being on TV, and being able to live a little better.

I’m feeling like its a sad situation, and I can definitely feel where they’re coming from. Puff’s got all this damn money, and won’t let them have their little publishing. But the Lox can’t really call it foul play, because they signed it over. They need to just charge that shit to the game, and move on. Gangsta’s don’t go to the media whining and shit.

  6. e-dubbs Says:

Let’s be real here. This is a motherf*ckin’ business first dawg. How can dudes sit there and ask Puff to give them their publishing back with a straight face? This is the way any business works. Sure, alot of artists are getting their publishing now but when they signed their contract it was a common practice in most instances for artists not to have full publishing.

Let’s think about it this way. If you had made an investment into a business, for example say a sneaker store ( i pick sneaker store cause everyone in the hood had a damn dream of opening one up when they was a youngin’) and a year after your investment your partner wants to buy you out of the business (which is basically what happened when LOX wanted off Badboy) more than likely you would require a large sum of cash at the buyout and a percentage of the business earnings over a certain period of time. Makes sense doesnt it? Thats what would happen in reality. Now would you give up your percentage of the earnings before the term expired? Of course not. So why should Puff? And dont hit me with the “he is making so much money off other stuff, let the Lox have they money” that has to be the lamest shit I ever heard. What you making off other business has nothing to do with this situation. Business is business, dawg.

What confuses me even more about this situation is.. When the Lox signed, it was a known fact about how Puff handled contract work with his artist. Infact, he slayed Mary J. Blige a few years prior but Mary J. still brings the Lox to BadBoy?! Didnt she or someone give them a heads up? And bottomline, these dudes wanted off Badboy in the first place. Funny how things aint always better on the otherside of the street. If you ask me, the Lox would have been in such a better financial situation if they stuck with Puff. I rather make 10% of ten million than 50% of 500,000. I also will contest that the Money, Power and Respect album was they best project and was done under the carefull eye of Puff. Say what you want, but he definetly would have guided these dudes alot better than Dee and Waah who turned out to be snakes just as much as Puff if not worse.

On a sidenote, I think they might regret beefin’ with Puff because late last night rumour is he is going to sell their publishing to 50 just to spite them. Ohh well.

  7. e-dubbs Says:

I also forgot to mention.. Is a dude suppose to release BIG publishing just because he passed? Why? Explain that to me.

  8. e-dubbs Says:

Damn… I just finished listening to this interview. Is Styles serious? “You can be safe on the street with us?” haha.. Was he safe when he got thrown through school street gym window and put in acoma? Was Kiss safe when dudes ran up on him and took his pistol? What Sheek safe when Jun from Elliot St. took his LOX chain? Forreal, yall gotta stop lovin’ these guys. The frontin’ gotta stop. Just be yourself and I’ll like yall more.

  9. Will Says:

Yeah, word from Yonkers is that Jada was really never a G. He was just a guy known for rappin in the hood all day every day. Growing up trying to battle niggas all the time.

  10. T Nelson Says:

I feel what yall saying its business but at the same time you gotta think about how your choices affect your future. Prime example when is the last time you saw Puff with a NEW artist. All his artist left and he cant sign new talent to save his life thats why Bad Boy died. I think Puff should at least give the LOX at least a percentage of the publishing for the simple fact most of his hot shyt they wrote. He has proven he cant make how shyt without them. He comes out taliking that shyt about empowering people and giving them opportunites but how you going to do that with out give niggas what they worked for? He is a hipocrite all he does is tell people what they want to hear to paint this “heal the world” image of himself. And all this time we thought Suge was the bad guy.

  11. e-dubbs Says:

He comes out taliking that shyt about empowering people and giving them opportunites but how you going to do that with out give niggas what they worked for?

  12. e-dubbs Says:

“He comes out taliking that shyt about empowering people and giving them opportunites but how you going to do that with out give niggas what they worked for ”

But that was the deal they worked out. He didnt force them to take that deal. Like I said, if we in business and the business is a split and especially if its a bitter-split, someone is gonna get the short end of the stick. You gotta understand the business world man. If your running a business and you trying to be Mr. Nice Guy, your business is gonna tank. You gotta be merciless when it comes down to business, bottomline.

  13. T Nelson Says:

Plus if BIG was really his man why not release his publishing or at least a portion to his family. Any real friend would want to see his family especially his kids in the best situation possible. Why you think he puttin all these BIG albums out he aint pay NOBODY off of them but himself. Profiting off the death of your “friend” come on now thats fucked up.

  14. eskay Says:

    >>more than likely you would require a large sum of cash at the buyout and a percentage of the business earnings over a certain period of time. Makes sense doesnt it? Thats what would happen in reality. Now would you give up your percentage of the earnings before the term expired?

yeah and RR paid nearly 3 mil to get them outta their Badboy deal so whats good? 3 million and you still own publishing rights for life? thats some bullshit..like you said edubbs ‘for a period of time’, but life?! come on!
I didnt hear it but i heard Jermaine dupri called up later on and said that he never heard of a deal like that in his whole career….

  15. T Nelson Says:

Diddy got a history of that shyt peep this

  16. T Nelson Says:

I feel that you cant be Mr Nice Guy, but come at some point right is right and wrong is wrong. At some point you gotta have some integrity and put respect before the dollar.

  17. doc Says:

all that shit looks suspect to me. i can understand coming from the hood u want to get out, so u do something stupid like signing over the publishing.

but at the same time…if diddy is eating…let the other dudes eat too.

i dont know man. that shit is fucked up.

diddy should have never called up in the first place. he made himself look silly out there.

    he’s a thief…we know this…dang man…that’s just a fucked up situation.

    uno

  18. e-dubbs Says:

“yeah and RR paid nearly 3 mil to get them outta their Badboy deal so whats good? 3 million and you still own publishing rights for life? thats some bullshit..like you said edubbs ‘for a period of time’, but life?! come on!
I didnt hear it but i heard Jermaine dupri called up later on and said that he never heard of a deal like that in his whole career”

But regardless, if we got a business and we negotiate a deal. Thats bad negotiating on RR behalf. Puff made an offer and they accepted it. What he suppose to do? Just give the publishing back? Yall made a deal. Live with it and move on. Your goal when negotiating a business deal is get the best deal possible, thats what Puff did. Kudo’s to him for his business savy. He should be praised, not persecuted.

  19. e-dubbs Says:

“I feel that you cant be Mr Nice Guy, but come at some point right is right and wrong is wrong. At some point you gotta have some integrity and put respect before the dollar.”

And whats right is honoring your end of the contract. Thats whats right. Those dudes accepted the deal they were offered, bottomline. They sound like a 3 head version of Terrell Owens.

  20. eskay Says:

    >> Thats bad negotiating on RR behalf.

true, but then Puff should say that. you heard the audio, he acts like its all good and he’s willing to negotiate. meanwhile its been 10 years. if your gonna negotiate then do it, stop stringing people along.

  21. e-dubbs Says:

“true, but then Puff should say that. you heard the audio, he acts like its all good and he’s willing to negotiate. meanwhile its been 10 years. if your gonna negotiate then do it, stop stringing people along. ”

I’m sure he willing to negotiate… but these dudes got unrealistic desires.. They just want they publishing back.. Nah, put up the right amount of money and I’m sure Puff would give it back. You heard what he said “The beatles cant get they publishing back from Michael Jackson”.. Styles used that qoute like its incriminating.. he doesnt realize that qoute cooked himself..

This interview irked my nerves the most because it sounded like they all were smacking on gum. Tacky.

he was already crucified in the Hate Me Now video.

  28. nova Says:

puff’s no thief he’s a business man…whether he owns 20% or 50% of the publishing is irrelevant. The lox signed a legal contract and are bound by it. It is not Diddys fault that neither the lox or their lawyer actually read the contract and thought it through in consideration of the longevity of the contract.
The lox are grown men…and when they signed they were not little children either. They had representation by counsil and were not held at gun point to sign away their lives. Diddy invested in them and really deserves a piece of the pie. Basically, they (the lox) should take responsiblity for their ignorance and humble themselves enough to work their way out of the contract rather than blasting a man who has no real reason to even meet with them for the fact remains that he get paid regardless. Diddy’s taking money from the lox…yes..but if he wasn’t… trust me someone else would be …the lox just aren’t smart enough to think that through. they’re just mad that it’s diddy not so much that fact that they don’t control their publishing…
Man up! ya’ll sound like women
