Songs come out every day by the boatload, and we all rush to check out the ones that peak our interest and critique them immediately. But how often do you get beyond that initial listen with a song, and actually put it on a playlist in your iTunes, transfer it to your phone, or burn it to a disc for your whip, to listen to it again and again? It takes a great song to make you want to do that nowadays, right? Well, these are a few of the tracks that made us put in that effort. Here are 13 Joints That We (NahRight and UpNorthTrips) Had in Heavy Rotation during 2013.

1. Action Bronson “9.24.13” – Party Supplies provides the beat for Bronson to reenact the story of him paying Patrick Ewing to blow a layup during one of the most famous Knicks playoff losses in history. Bam Bam’s fuck-ups make it even better, as does Big Body’s rant.

2. Bodega Bamz ft. A$AP Ferg “Say Amen” – Rap squat to this.

3. Danny Brown ft. A$AP Rocky & Zelooperz “Kush Coma” – Rocky and Detroit artist Zelooperz get high with Danny Brown on this Old standout.

4. Drake “The Language” – Drizzy dumbed out on this with the Migos flow. And Birdman’s appearance at the end is legendary.

5. Jay Z “Open Letter” – Hov addressed all pressing issues in this pre-Magna Carta Holy Grail loosie, and we liked it just as much if not more than everything on the album.

6. Kanye West “I’m In It” – ‘Ye gets graphic as fuck over one of the illest productions on Yeezus. This shit is next level.

7. Lil Herb & Lil Bibby “Kill Shit” – You’ll be hearing a lot more from these two Chicago phenoms in 2014, this was their warning shot to the game.

8. Pusha T “King Push” – Pusha’s solo debut was trump tight, and we banged this on the reg from the moment we first heard it. Egchkkk.

9. Roc Marciano “Bruh Man” – This loosie that features Roc rhyming over a Lord Finesse-produced loop from O.C.’s “Jewelz” dropped last winter and held us down all year before finally finding a home on The Pimpire Strikes Back.

10. ScHoolboy Q “Yay Yay” – Q’s album is one of the most anticipated joints of 2014, easily. And this is one of the reasons why.

11. Troy Ave “Classic Feel” – Troy restores the feeling on the lead cut from New York City: The Album.

12. Vic Mensa “Orange Soda” – Vic Mensa’s got serious skills, and this beat is equally as serious. Sick song.

13. 2 Chainz “Feds Watching” – 2 Chainz gets busy over one of Pharrell’s more slept-on productions of the year.

List compiled in collaboration with UpNorthTrips. Words by Daniel Isenberg @StanIpcus.
