The veteran rappers owned 2013. Everyone from Jay Z to Eminem to Kanye West released huge albums this year. But we also saw a hefty crop of new talent emerge and make their mark. Here are 13 Artists We (NahRight and UpNorthTrips) Hope to Hear More From in 2014.

1. Azizi Gibson – You may still not be up on Brainfeeder artist Azizi Gibson, but that doesn’t mean he’s not dope as shit. Peep his video for “Ghost in the Shell,” and then stay tuned to what he does next. Dude’s got skills, and he doesn’t give a fuck, which usually makes for a great combo.

2. Black Dave – Rapper/skateboarder Black Dave put out his Black Bart mixtape in September, and it had some shit on it. His videos are ill, too. Check out our Heavy Rotation interview with him here.

3. Bodega Bamz – Bodega Bamz is one of New York City’s rising rap stars, and he’s already making an impact beyond the five boroughs with his Tanboys movement.

4. Chance The Rapper – Chance became a full-blown rap star this year thanks to his Acid Rap mixtape and buzzing live show. We wonder what he has up his sleeve for 2014. Hopefully an official debut album?

5. Denzil Porter – “Bishop” was one of the illest songs to come out of New York this year, and we have a feeling the BX spitter is cooking up something special for ’14.

6. Nitty Scott MC – Nitty Scott MC’s got skills, and she’s proven them on tracks with everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Troy Ave. We def want to hear more.

7. Polyester the Saint – Poly’s done production for some of your favorite West Coast artists like Dom Kennedy, Blu, and Casey Veggies, but his 2013 solo project POP proved that he’s got mad flavor of his own, too. He’s on some sunroof-open shit, and that’s the type of lifestyle we want to lead.

8. Ratking – New York crew Ratking, led by the ridiculously talented MC Wiki, gave us a glimpse of what they’ve got coming in 2014 with their video for “100.” These guys are on some next shit, and we fucks with it.

9. RetcH – RetcH’s Thelonious Martin-produced project Polo Sporting Goods got a lot of spins during the last month of the year. Let’s hope they do a follow-up. Read more about it here.

10. The Underachievers – Brooklyn duo Issa Gold and Ak dropped two solid projects this year, Indigoism and The Lords of Flatbush, but we’re confident that the best is yet to come.

11. Vince Staples – This kid can spit. We just want to hear more bars from him, plain and simple. He’s got finesse.

12. Vic Mensa – Formerly of Kids These Days, Chi-Town spitter and SAVEMONEY representative Vic Mensa’s future is looking bright, especially after the release of his solid project INNANETAPE. And as a bonus, if you want to really dig deep, you should also be checking for SAVEMONEY’s Joey Purp. He’s got some fire, too.

13. World’s Fair – These dudes are part of the movement bringing New York rap back to the essence, and they’re doing a great job of it.
